What if All Dance Forms Were Considered Equal?

Under the gentle radiance of golden chandeliers stood dancers, rows and rows of them, gleaming onstage. The scene was like a painting steeped in mist, its width diffused by shards of light and fog, its depth seeming to reach into infinity. Within each body, you felt dance history. For this version of his dance “Apaches,” the choreographer Saïdo Lehlouh opened the Foyer de la Danse behind the stage at the Palais Garnier, the opera house that is a hallowed home for classical ballet. The foyer, a gilded salon where dancers warm up, is not a space the public usually sees.

Josephine Baker, Still Moving

There was no shortage of epithets for Josephine Baker, the St. Louis-born polymath who took Paris by storm when she arrived there in 1925, aged 19, to headline “La Revue Nègre,” a show of all-Black performers at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The French graphic designer Paul Colin said he’d never seen anyone move like her: “Part kangaroo, part prizefighter. A woman made of rubber, a female Tarzan.” To the writer Colette, a rumored lover, she was “a most beautiful panther,” and to Ernest Hemingway, “the most sensational woman anyone ever saw.” Over the next decade, she was also called “Black Venus,” “Black Pearl” and “Creole Goddess.”It is the Baker of this era — doing her scantily clad “danse sauvage” — who still looms large in the cultural imagination. She was an Art Deco icon who was inducted into France’s Panthéon in 2021 and honored by Beyoncé on her recent “Renaissance” tour. A new exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin presents Baker in the round — not as an object of entertainment, but as an artist and an activist.

Northeast of Paris, Pantin is the base of the Hermès luxury brand and some cultural powerhouses as well, notably the Centre National de la Danse and an exhibition space from Thaddeus Ropac, one of Paris’s most well-known art gallerists. Staying in Pantin also offers quick access to top cultural venues in Paris’s 19th arrondissement. The Philharmonie de Paris complex includes a Jean Nouvel-designed concert hall and music museum, while the nearby Grande Halle de la Villette hosts exhibitions and performances. You get the same kitchen, cooks, dining room and savoir-faire, but the whole package is easier to reserve — and to pay for. Such a deal makes the restaurant “the perfect place to discover haute cuisine for a small price,” in the words of the French newsweekly Le Point.

New York will get a new dance festival this fall: Van Cleef & Arpels, the French luxury jeweler, announced on Tuesday that it would sponsor a 16-day event partly aimed at bringing more international choreographers and ensembles to the city. The festival, Dance Reflections, will feature groups like LA(HORDE), a French collective that will perform a work set to electronic music with the Ballet National de Marseille. The festival will open with an American classic: “Dance,” a 1979 collaboration between the postmodern choreographer Lucinda Childs and the composer Philip Glass, performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet on Oct. 19 at New York City Center. “We want to combine together very different approaches and to promote the diversity and richness of dance,” Serge Laurent, director of dance and culture programs for Van Cleef & Arpels, said in an interview. “It’s important for the development of artists and audience to be exposed to different approaches, and to have another view of the international scene.”The lineup also includes work by the experimental choreographer Gisèle Vienne and U.S. premieres by Rachid Ouramdane, who directs the Chaillot-Théâtre National de la Danse in Paris; the contemporary choreographer Dimitri Chamblas, in a collaboration with Kim Gordon; the Polish-born choreographer Ola Maciejewska; and the British-Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza.
