On a spring morning, a pair of rock-climbing shoes hung by the door of the light-filled cabin where he lives in the Appalachian Mountains.
He is trying to move on from Iraq, but a lurking darkness keeps pulling him off course.
He made some of the photographs accompanying this article while he was in the Marine Corps, from 2009 to 2018.
He is now studying film at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Md.
