NEW YORK (AP) — David Bouley, the award-winning and frenetic chef whose idiosyncratic haute cuisine and crusty breads pleased critics and the public during a career chasing sleek deliciousness, has died. Bouley died of a heart attack Monday at his home in Kent, Connecticut, according to Lisa Queen, his literary agent. Other restaurants he worked in include Danube, Bouley Bakery, Upstairs at Bouley, Bouley at Home, Secession and Brushstroke, a collaborative effort with the Tsuji Culinary Institute in Osaka, Japan. Danube and Bouley Bakery each earned two Michelin stars. The restaurant Bouley — which famously had a foyer filled with apples — closed in 2017 after 30 years and several location changes, earning a three-star from the New York Times the year previously.

Frederick Wiseman’s transporting documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” centers on a dynasty of French chefs who live and work in a pastoral region in central France named Ouches, some 65 miles west of Lyon. The chef Daniel Boulud includes the Troisgros salmon recipe in several of his cookbooks. “Menus-Plaisirs” is Wiseman’s 44th documentary and the first that he’s made since “City Hall” (2020), which notionally focuses on the administration building for the city of Boston. (In between “City Hall” and “Menus-Plaisirs,” he made one of his rare forays into fiction, “A Couple,” about Sophia Tolstoy.) Wiseman directed, edited and served as one of the producers on “Menus-Plaisirs,” which runs a heroic four hours (about a half-hour shorter than “City Hall”!).

When the chef Yann Nury, 39, was growing up in Ardèche, France, summer meant a frenzy for peak-season produce. “Melons, strawberries and peaches are my childhood,” says Nury, from the loft in New York’s SoHo neighborhood that serves as his invitation-only dining room, La Residence. “For two weeks, that was almost all we ate — but only for two weeks.”It’s no surprise then that Nury, who cooked on Daniel Boulud’s private events team before setting out on his own almost a decade ago, is best known for delicate French fare made with ingredients at the apex of their micro-season prime. Often, he combines his fruit and vegetable obsession with formal technique: think turnip and seaweed mille-feuilles cut to sharp 90-degree angles and single-bite tartlets filled with nearly translucent petals of heirloom carrot. But he’s also hailed for his exactingly prepared versions of American comfort foods like burgers and s’mores, making him an ideal cookout host.

Another members-only club has opened in New York. But unlike its predecessors, which include Soho House, Aman, Casa Cipriani, and others, the Centurion New York was designed not by an architect or hotelier — but by a credit card company. American Express opened its first Centurion members club, an 11,500-square-foot space with wraparound views of Manhattan in March. Even the scent — a Santal with notes of sandalwood — bathing over you after exiting the elevator was planned. American Express brought on Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud to create the menu, which includes simple dishes like lobster rolls and cheesecake.
At a private dinner Wednesday at New York's swanky Le Pavillon, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called on tech executives to keep their companies in the city, even as industry leaders raise concerns to city officials of soaring rents and an increase in violent crime. He told the more than two dozen tech leaders: "New York City needs and wants technology companies," another attendee said, adding that city officials want tech companies to "help grow the economy of this city." Adams' spokesman Fabien Levy confirmed the mayor spoke to the tech executives, but said, "Mayor Adams wasn't there for dinner." "While we don't discuss private conversations, Mayor Adams always welcomes and encourages businesses to come to NYC," Levy said in an email. Conway said in an interview, noting that it's important for tech leaders and companies to be civically engaged.
