It’s not hard to conclude that former President Donald Trump himself makes it nearly impossible to have the type of debate Vance and Walz participated in Tuesday night. But Trump has never participated in a debate that didn’t devolve into something more pugilistic and even immature and juvenile at times. Going into this debate, I assumed that both vice presidential nominees would be more focused on the tops of the tickets. It's an interesting decision given how it seems as if the Trump campaign team desperately wants to re-attach Biden’s unpopular brand to Harris. I think Trump and his team are convinced Harris needs another debate more than Trump does.

Programming note: Stay tuned for a special edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter tonight, where we will be recapping and analyzing the Vance-Walz debate. 5 things to watch for at tonight’s VP debateSen. JD Vance of Ohio and Minnesota Gov. Walz has the longer debate record, but Minnesota is something of a backwater on the national political scene. How Vance and Walz’s poll numbers stack up to past VP nomineesBy Steve KornackiHeading into tonight’s vice presidential debate, JD Vance has an image problem. With tens of millions expected to watch tonight’s debate, Vance does have an opportunity to improve his standing — just as a shaky performance by Walz could erase the advantage he now enjoys over Vance.

In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Sahil Kapur breaks down how Kamala Harris is handling shifting border politics. Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker previews next week's vice presidential debate. Harris seeks to neutralize immigration vulnerability as the politics tilt rightBy Sahil KapurKamala Harris is aiming to neutralize a political vulnerability and rebut Donald Trump’s core campaign message today as she takes her tough-on-migration stance to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. Trump has long held a clear advantage among voters on immigration, though NBC News polling shows that edge is narrowing. It also comes after snap polls and many observers concluded Harris bested Trump in their first — and perhaps only — debate.

Quayle’s “Murphy Brown” pronouncement made newspaper front pages and television broadcasts, and garnered a stumbling response from the White House. ‘Murphy Brown’ reflected women’s changing role in society“Murphy Brown” premiered on CBS in 1988, starring Candice Bergen as a fierce, acerbic news anchor of the same name. “I don’t think that we felt that we were igniting any controversy.”The controversy sparked a debate over ‘family values’Despite the “Murphy Brown” writers’ intentions, the storyline did ignite controversy. Candice Bergen threw shade at JD Vance at the Emmys on Sunday night. Bergen was presenting the best lead actress in a comedy series award. She linked then-VP Dan Quayle's criticism of "Murphy Brown" to Vance's "childless cat lady" remark. Bergen presented the award for lead actress in a comedy series. In her brief speech before announcing the winner, she reflected on her own time starring in the comedy series "Murphy Brown," on which she played the titular character.

Not only would a ticket with Kamala Harris as president and Michigan Gov. Both Harris and Whitmer have been passionate and effective champions of what could be the defining issue in 2024: reproductive rights. Finally, both Harris and Whitmer were once prosecutors, and their ticket would create a ready-made television spot: the law-and-order prosecutors versus the convicted felon. In addition, both Harris and Whitmer could use their laser-like prosecutorial skills to combat Trump’s endless exaggerations, false claims, and disinformation. Do Harris and Whitmer reflect our values, or does Donald Trump?

Since 1940, the state has voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election except for 1964 and 2008. And former President Donald Trump is virtually assured of winning the state this November, as he also did in 2016 and 2020. But an interesting thing happened on Tuesday: Trump won the GOP presidential primary, but former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley still won over 20 percent of the vote, despite her March exit from the race. With nearly all precincts reporting their results, Trump earned 461,663 votes (78.3 percent) to Haley's 128,168 votes (21.7 percent). But many suburban voters are also concerned about issues like the preservation of democracy, abortion rights, and environmental policy, which all strongly favor Biden.

This reflects history, which shows that while being vice president often correlates with success in future presidential ambitions, it is far from a guarantee. Think about recent vice presidents who have tried to upgrade their positions. That doesn’t seem like a particularly high success rate, though we should remember that many vice presidents (like Cheney) don’t run. About 55% of vice presidents who ran for their party’s nomination became the head of their party’s ticket. The last time it happened was 1940, when President Franklin Roosevelt crushed his vice president, John Nance Garner.

A vice president makes countless public appearances that will be mostly ignored unless something humiliating happens — something that serves to make him or her look like the hapless lightweight who symbolizes an entire administration’s ineptitude. Bush’s young vice president, Dan Quayle, is remembered for misspelling “potato” on camera. Biden’s time in the office actually helped burnish a goofy charm; he was seen not just as folksy or avuncular but, in some corners, paradoxically cool. This is the woman seen, in some clips, singing “Wheels on the Bus” at a campaign vehicle and then cackling with laughter, or gushing about Venn diagrams. One Twitter user racked up likes by positing that her meandering sentences resemble the dense philosophy of Friedrich Hegel.

WASHINGTON — The National Archives and Records Administration on Thursday requested that former presidents and vice presidents "conduct an assessment" to determine if they have any classified materials in their possession. Under the Presidential Records Act, all presidential and vice presidential records - including any classified documents - must be turned over to Archives by the end of their terms. A spokesperson for the Archives declined to comment on the letter, which was sent after classified documents were found at the homes of former Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Mike Pence, as well as an office Biden previously used. On Thursday, Bush's office responded to the Archives letter by saying, "Thank you for your note. Former Vice President Dan Quayle’s office said Thursday: “We have not received an inquiry from the National Archives.
The NARA has reportedly reached out to representatives of former presidents and vice presidents. NARA wants them to check their records for classified information, according to a letter seen by CNN. Reps for Obama, George W. Bush, and Clinton have told Insider they don't have classified documents. The request comes after classified documents were found in recent months at the homes and offices of President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and former Vice President Mike Pence. Bush and Ronald Reagan, and former Vice Presidents Mike Pence, Biden, Dick Cheney, Al Gore and Dan Quayle, CNN reported.
Redistricting and fights over political lines have fueled the aging of America's government. Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois outside a January 6 committee hearing on June 13, 2022. Partisan gerrymandering, the redrawing of political district lines to favor one political party over the other, has gotten increasingly tactical. In all, 14 House incumbents lost renomination in 2022, the highest number in a single cycle since 1992. If you're a Democrat in a Republican district, your days are probably numbered."
