Nebraska’s Dan Osborn is returning to work Tuesday as a steamfitter after his unsuccessful Senate run, but his political career isn’t over. Osborn, who ran as an independent, is launching a political action committee, called the Working Class Heroes Fund, to support working-class candidates of all parties. And he isn’t ruling out another run for office after his loss to GOP Sen. Deb Fischer. Osborn said his PAC will support candidates of any party, and he said he didn’t expect to have many policy litmus tests, apart from supporting campaign finance overhaul and rejecting corporate donations. His Senate campaign raised $7.9 million through mid-October, according to the latest campaign finance reports, and he said it ultimately raised more than $14 million.

Republicans have averted a potential disaster in Nebraska, with NBC News projecting that Sen. Deb Fischer has won re-election to a third term. Fischer faced a surprisingly competitive challenge from independent Dan Osborn, a mechanic and union leader who cast her as a creature of Washington. Fischer's win gives the Republicans 51 Senate seats, putting them over the threshold needed for control of the chamber, NBC News projects. CNN —Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will win reelection in Nebraska, defeating an unexpectedly strong challenge from independent Dan Osborn, CNN projects. Fischer was first elected to the Senate in 2012, when she became the first female senator elected to a full term in Nebraska. Fischer, who will begin her third Senate term in January, said she changed her mind after realizing how important seniority is for members of Congress. Former President Donald Trump also sought to tie Osborn to the left in his endorsement of Fischer. The first person I met at a Monday night meet-and-greet for Dan Osborn, the independent Nebraska Senate candidate, was a Donald Trump-voting Republican named Joe Hallett. He’d worked, alongside his wife, Sherri, with Osborn at Omaha’s Kellogg plant. Explaining Osborn’s appeal, Joe said, “He’s not a millionaire or anything like that.” Sherri added: “He works hard. We did the same thing.”Neither was a fan of Osborn’s opponent, the Republican senator Deb Fischer. It drew a few dozen people — more Democrats and independents than Republicans — and Osborn stayed to talk and shake hands until the place closed.

And they are long-shot races, especially during a presidential election, when ticket-splitting isn’t as common as it used to be. In Florida and Texas, Democrats are focusing on state abortion bans to try to push beyond their recent losses in those states. Cruz’s campaign spent almost $5 million on ads in September and $4 million in the first 10 days of October. The spending disparity is less stark in Florida, where in September Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign spent $8.6 million and Scott’s campaign spent $2.1 million. In Maryland, the Senate race features a similar dynamic, with the race rated by Cook as “Likely Democrat,” even though Harris is expected to win there easily.

Read previewOn Tuesday, Elon Musk's X fulfilled his promise to sue advertisers over their boycotting of the platform. GARM creates frameworks to provide common definitions around areas like hate speech and misinformation; it's voluntary whether advertisers use them. It doesn't rank platforms on these issues, and its role isn't to advise advertisers on where to spend their dollars. US advertisers are also protected by the First Amendment to spend or not spend on whichever media platforms they please. If the X suit moves into the discovery phase, there could be a whole lot more.
