Inside the Quest to Make Fusion Energy a Reality
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Raymond Zhong | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +15 min
The Quest to Build a Star on Earth Start-ups say we’re closer than ever to near-limitless, zero-carbon energy from fusion. Today’s fusion start-ups aren’t just preparing for this moment in the lab. Such advances helped the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory produce more fusion energy than the energy in the incoming laser beams, for the briefest of moments, in 2022. They also helped European researchers generate record amounts of fusion energy at a facility in Britain last year. What worries researchers is how much some fusion start-ups are promising, and how soon.

Rome, Italy Reuters —Italian police have uncovered a large-scale pan-European forgery network making and selling fake artworks attributed to some of the biggest names in modern and contemporary art including Banksy, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. The chief prosecutor of Pisa, Teresa Angela Camelio, said experts from the Banksy archive who assisted with the investigation considered Monday’s operation as “the biggest act of protection of Banksy’s work.”Some of the fake artworks displayed by the Carabinieri in Pisa, Italy. 02:42 - Source: CNNThey said their probe started in 2023 when they seized about 200 fake pieces from the collection of a businessman in Pisa including a copy of a drawing by Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. That led them to forgeries sold by auction houses across Italy, and to connect them to a known group believed to specialize in forgeries of Banksy and Warhol. To boost their credentials, the unnamed suspects organized two Banksy exhibitions with a published catalog in prestigious locations in Mestre near Venice and Cortona in Tuscany, investigators said.

In a complaint Sept. 18, the U.S. claimed civil damages totaling $103,078,056 under the Rivers and Harbors Act, the Oil Pollution Act and general maritime law, according to the release. There are still dozens of outstanding civil claims, including one from the state of Maryland, seeking damages from the owners of the Dali. According to the Justice Department, Thursday's settlement does not include damages to rebuild the bridge because Maryland built, owned, maintained and operated it. The Dali smashed into the Key Bridge early March 26 after it left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka. The ship lost power, regained power, then lost power again before it hit the bridge, causing it to collapse into the Fort McHenry Channel.

Victims' families and a survivor of a Maryland bridge collapse that killed six people filed claims Friday for wrongful death and punitive damages against the owner and the operator of the massive cargo ship that crashed into the bridge earlier this year. The 100,000-plus-ton ship Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26 as a work crew was fixing potholes. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River. The nearly two dozen crew members on the ship survived, along with two pilots who were helping the vessel navigate the harbor. Days after the bridge collapse, the ship’s Singapore-based owner and manager petitioned a Maryland court to limit their monetary liability to $43.67 million, the value of the ship and its cargo, based on a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law.

The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday sued the owner and manager of the cargo ship that caused the Baltimore bridge collapse, seeking to recover more than $100 million that the government spent to clear the underwater debris and reopen the city's port. The collapse snarled commercial shipping traffic through the Port of Baltimore for months before the channel was fully opened in June. The case was filed against Dali owner Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and manager Synergy Marine Group, both of Singapore. The companies filed a court petition days after the collapse seeking to limit their legal liability in what could become the most expensive marine casualty case in history.

The officer arrives at 1:48 a.m. and asks an officer already at the scene: "Is that the Key Bridge collapsed?" "Yeah it's the whole bridge, a ship lost its steering and the whole bridge is down in the river," he responds. The original officer, struggling to take in the size of the disaster then says: "I mean, that's the Key Bridge ... "That's a long fall," one officer says of the missing construction workers.

Crew members haven’t been able to get off the ship for a variety of reasons. Bennett’s email identifies the eight eligible crew members, which include a cook, a fitter and an oiler. As part of the deal, those crew members will not need to stay in Baltimore. But with the new agreement Wednesday night, the eight crew members would be able to leave the country before they’re deposed. But it’s still unclear exactly when the eight crew members – and the rest of their colleagues – will be able to leave.

The Port of Baltimore processed a record 1.1 million containers and $80.8 billion in foreign cargo value last year, according to state data. Nearly eight weeks after the container ship Dali rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, efforts were underway on Monday to move it back to a berth in the Port of Baltimore. The operation appeared to be off to a slow start, with five tugboats surrounding the giant ship but no official word that the move was underway an hour after its anticipated 5:30 a.m. start. The bridge collapsed on impact, killing six workers doing repairs on the bridge roadway, clogging the waterway with around 50,000 tons of metal and debris, and disrupting the commerce of one of the nation’s key shipping hubs. The salvage and recovery operation has involved more than a thousand workers and scores of barges, cranes, helicopters and Coast Guard cutters. Authorities set a goal of reopening that channel by the end of May.

Officials are tentatively scheduled to carry out the controlled demolition around 5 p.m., according to the US Coast Guard. The planned demolition is aimed at helping officials remove debris and ultimately free the 213-million-pound Dali cargo ship, which veered off course March 26 and struck a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to fall into the water below. The collapse killed six construction workers and destroyed a key thoroughfare, threatening the economy at the Port of Baltimore. Officials last week recovered the sixth and final body, allowing them to proceed with the plan to free the Dali. “The safest and swiftest method to remove the bridge piece from on top of the M/V Dali is by precision cuts made with small charges,” the Key Bridge Response Unified Command said in a news release last week.

New York CNN —The state of Maryland is about to get an insurance payment of $350 million related to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in late March, according to the broker handling its policy on the structure. The payment would come from insurer Chubb, which has a $350 million limit on the policy it had written on the bridge, according to Henry Daar, head of property claims, North America for WTW, the broker on the policy. The payment will be made soon rather than waiting for the construction of a new bridge to begin, a process that could be years away. The accident temporarily closed much of the operations of the Port of Baltimore, trapping ships in the port. The planned payment by Chubb was first reported Thursday by the Wall Street Journal.
