Those relationships may prove especially valuable in the coming days as the 2024 election comes to a close. In swing states like North Carolina and Michigan, local journalists have doubled as campaign experts, covering presidential candidate rallies and interviewing voters by the dozen. CNN asked seven swing state editors and reporters about what they’ve been experiencing in the run-up to Election Day. In Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has invested heavily in statewide polling and stationed reporters across the city and state. “Months of reporting and listening have told us this: Georgia voters are largely dissatisfied with our country’s direction,” editor-in-chief Leroy Chapman Jr. said.

Opinion: European soccer’s latest racism row
  + stars: | 2024-06-16 | by ( Opinion Keith Magee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —On Sunday, England will face Serbia in its first game of the Euro 2024 championship, hosted by Germany. Since then, the FA, the European football association UEFA and FIFA , the sport’s international governing body, have visibly upped their anti-racism game. One might conclude, for instance, that Monday’s court decision in Spain meting out prison sentences to three Valencia fans for hurling racial insults, is evidence of European soccer’s new, tougher line against racism. Saka knows UEFA observers will be on duty at every Euro 2024 match and will be on the lookout for racist incidents. I see it as an attempt by professionals who should know better to make a Black player carry the can for a disappointing performance by the whole team.

Experts say tattoos can impact hiring decisions, especially in customer-facing roles. Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job, and the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection. AdvertisementAnother commenter, who said they used to be a hiring manager for the store, said: "I will tell you it's the facial piercings and tattoos." Ivy Johnson, for example, who also has many tattoos, said she had worked in corporate America as a hiring manager before starting up her apothecary business.

We now have our third Tory prime minister in seven weeks — Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister. But perhaps one of the most head-scratching moments of this whole ordeal was how Boris Johnson’s supporters were pushing for him to make a comeback following Liz Truss’ disastrous 44 days as prime minister. He won by default without the vote being decided online by all Conservative Party members, as planned. Of course, limiting the decision of a new prime minister to the members of one party alone is undemocratic. That just scratches the surface of the damage he did as prime minister.
We experienced so much stress related to my father, that happy spending was a lifeline. My mom stashed away money for joy like our lives depended on it. My mom made sacrifices so we could afford joyful 'nonessentials'Much of my childhood was spent terrorized by my sociopathic father. Her philosophy — that spending money on "non-essential" pick-me-ups is actually pretty damn essential — kept us mentally (and financially) afloat. The reason I deliberately budget joy into my expenses is because I know what it's like when you can't afford to.
Elon Musk praised a Putin ally for trolling the UK's prime minister over her resignation. On Thursday, Dmitry Medvedev trolled UK Prime Minister Liz Truss for resigning after only 44 days in office, and alluded to a running joke in UK tabloid The Daily Star about whether she'd last longer than a lettuce. Musk was criticised for the jokey interaction with Medvedev, who has previously served as prime minister and president of Russia, and now leads its security council. Musk, the world's richest man, has recently made a series of outspoken pronouncements on the Ukraine war and tensions between Taiwan and China. Fiona Hill, a former White House Russia expert, said Putin was likely manipulating Musk.
LONDON — Liz Truss lost to a head of lettuce. The leafy vegetable's decay was more gradual than Truss' crumbling tenure as British prime minister, which ended with her resignation Thursday. Her decision provided an unlikely victory for the lettuce, which had been pitted against her by a tabloid newspaper last Friday. Amer Ghazzal / Shutterstock“The lettuce outlasted Liz Truss,” the caption declared as a remix of “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang kicked in, lights flashed in the background and bottles of alcohol were added to the scene. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev tweeted “congrats to lettuce” shortly after Truss’ speech.
U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss was trounced by a head of lettuce. As Ms. Truss scrambled to hold on to her post this month, a U.K. tabloid decided to have some fun. The tabloid, the Daily Star, picked up a 60-pence head of lettuce from Tesco and started live-streaming it on Oct. 14. It was a stunt to see if the unrefrigerated vegetable would stay fresh long enough to see Ms. Truss out of office.
Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova speaks during a session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Saint Petersburg, Russia June 16, 2022. REUTERS/Maxim ShemetovOct 20 (Reuters) - Russia's foreign ministry on Thursday welcomed the departure of British Prime Minister Liz Truss, saying she was a disgrace of a leader who would be remembered for her "catastrophic illiteracy". "Britain has never known such a disgrace of a prime minister," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a social media post. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Zakharova's reference to illiteracy appears to refer to that trip, when Truss was British foreign minister. In a meeting with Russia's veteran foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, she appeared to confuse two regions of Russia with Ukraine, drawing mockery in Russian media.
LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - To the strains of Britain's national anthem, a national newspaper on Thursday declared a lettuce the victor in a race to see if it could outlast Liz Truss, after the under-fire prime minister resigned. The tabloid Daily Star set up a live feed on Friday showing the unrefrigerated iceberg next to a photo of Truss, asking readers: "Which wet lettuce will last longer?" Moments later, as viewer numbers hit 21,000, "God Save the King" rang out as a hand reached across the table and set Truss's photo on its back and the caption "The lettuce has outlasted Liz Truss" appeared. In a column published last week titled "The Iceberg Lady", the Economist magazine described Truss as having "the shelf-life of a lettuce". Truss's political role model, 1980s prime minister Margaret Thatcher, was widely known as the Iron Lady.
Anthony Scaramucci poked fun at British Prime Minister Liz Truss' abrupt resignation. Scaramucci congratulated Truss for lasting longer than he did in the White House. Truss did not outlast a head of lettuce which a British tabloid had pitted against her. "1 Scaramucci = carton of milk 1 Truss = head of lettuce," Scaramucci wrote on Twitter. That means Truss lasted "4.1 Scaramuccis," rounding up, of course.
President Joe Biden even joined the criticism with a rare comment on an ally’s economic policies in which he called the tax cut plan a “mistake.”Truss admitted fault Monday night. “I do want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made,” she told BBC News. “Anyone could have seen that this wasn’t going to fly — how could they have not seen that coming?” Ford said. As critics had predicted, markets tanked and the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar in 30 years. “It wasn’t just a total disaster with the markets, it was a total disaster electorally,” Ford said of Truss’ economic plan.

China's 'zero-COVID' policy – including stringent lockdowns, travel restrictions and mass testing - has taken a heavy toll on the country's economy. The government's crackdown on big technology companies has also had an outsized effect on the young workforce. Chinese households overall added 10.8 trillion yuan ($1.54 trillion) in new bank savings in the first eight months of the year, up from 6.4 trillion yuan in the same period last year. China is the only leading economy that cut interest rates this year, in an effort to spur growth. Fu said she switched her makeup powder brand from Givenchy to a Chinese brand called Florasis, which is about 60% cheaper.
