The superhero factory hit a new low with the weekend launch of “The Marvels,” which opened with just $47 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. It was also the rare Marvel movie led by three women — Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani. After numerous strike-related delays, the only Marvel movie currently on the studio’s 2024 calendar is “Deadpool 3,” opening July 26. While quite low for a $200 million movie, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is primarily an awards-season statement by Apple of its growing moviemaking ambitions. "The Marvels,” $47 million.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming “The Marvels,” has a diagnosis for the recent struggles of superhero movies. It’s the first Marvel movie to feature not just all-female leads but a female villain (Zawe Ashton plays Dar-Benn), as well. While originally conceived as a post-“Endgame” follow-up to “Captain Marvel,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige was drawn to the chance to unite Captain Marvel with Rambeau from “WandaVision” and Ms. Marvel of her standalone Disney+ series. After making “Candyman,” a Marvel movie was, DaCosta says, “definitely not in my near future.” But it also wasn’t entirely off her radar. When DaCosta was tapped to helm “The Marvels,” Feige encouraged her to reach out to other Marvel movie directors for advice.

“I’m hoping I’m not promoting the movie by myself,” says Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming Marvel movie “The Marvels" (Nov. 10). The fall has long been the preferred domain of filmmakers and auteurs, but this year that’s doubly so. But now that the strikes have rounded Labor Day, with no end in sight, Hollywood’s high season is imperiled. Everyone is hoping the strikes ends soon, but it’s clear that, not long after COVID-19 upended the industry, the usual rhythms of the fall movie season have again been blown to smithereens. I just want to see every movie coming out,” says Emerald Fennell, whose high-society satire “Saltburn” opens Nov. 24.

The Tribeca Festival Has a Story to Tell
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( Natalia Winkelman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Every spring, the Tribeca Festival returns to Lower Manhattan with a bulky mixed bag of creative programming. Past attendees of the festival might recall Robert De Niro, one of its founders, rapping, “I’ve got a story to tell,” at the start of a bouncy, AT&T-sponsored Tribeca trailer that preceded screenings for half a dozen years. The industry is in crisis, and as the guilds sound alarm bells, it will be interesting to see how Tribeca amplifies their chime. A top U.S. film festival, Tribeca has long served as a kind of industry nexus, platforming big-studio movies beside indies. The festival has also proven a conduit for filmmakers to go from newcomer to big deal.

Willie B. Thomas | DigitalVision | Getty ImagesFinancial stability is a concern for many older Americans, and challenges can be greater among marginalized groups such as elders in the LGBTQ+ community. But a free financial literacy app called SAGECents is looking to change that. What's worse, 1 in 5 older LGBTQ+ adults faced poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic, a 2023 study from the Williams Institute at UCLA's School of Law found. "They've faced a lifetime of discrimination and social stigma," said Christina DaCosta, chief experience officer at SAGE, a national organization dedicated to improving the lives of older LGBTQ+ people. Older LGBTQ+ Americans are more likely to be single and to live alone, making them less likely to benefit from a partner's health insurance or other "social welfare structures," he said.
