SAN DIEGO — Winter charged on day one Saturday, as a dangerous northwest swell raced across the Pacific and triggered high surf alerts from Hawaii to California. The most urgent big-wave alert, a high surf warning, is in effect for parts of Hawaii, including surfing's mecca, the North Shore, where waves of 50 feet are possible Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The warnings are issued when waves pose a threat to life and property, the weather service says. The biggest waves in Southern California could reach 13 feet and will likely be found in San Diego County, it said. Big waves were also forecast for the West Coast up to the U.S.-Canada border, with the weather service in Seattle calling for waves as high as 30 feet and the office that covers Portland, Oregon, predicting waves as high as 33 feet.

Rickey Henderson, the greatest base stealer in Major League Baseball history and one of the game’s most enduring players, has died, Major League Baseball confirmed Saturday. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred called Henderson the “gold standard of base stealing and leadoff hitting” in a statement Saturday that expressed the league’s condolences Saturday. In 2001 while playing for San Diego — one of the nine teams he played over a 25-year career — Henderson passed Babe Ruth as MLB’s all-time walks leader. A field near his high school, Oakland Tech, still bears Henderson’s name. “There was only one Rickey Henderson in baseball,” George Steinbrenner, the former Yankees owner, once said, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The traffic cameras, which use AI to detect and flag certain driving behaviors, might make it easier to prosecute more people than ever before for driving infractions. Acusensus, an Australian company, has worked with governments in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to roll out some of the AI traffic cameras. Its camera system, called “Heads Up,” uses AI to catch drivers who are texting while driving or aren’t wearing seat belts. Speed and red light cameras are already familiar to U.S. drivers, capturing license plates and sending tickets by mail. The Queensland government reported that since it set up the cameras, road deaths have gone down by 7.1%.

SAN DIEGO — Former military defense contractor Leonard “Fat Leonard” Francis was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for masterminding a decade-long bribery scheme that swept up dozens of U.S. Navy officers, federal prosecutors said. The Malaysian defense contractor was a key contact for U.S. Navy ships at ports across Asia for more than two decades. He pleaded guilty in 2015, admitting that he had offered more than $500,000 in cash bribes to Navy officials, defense contractors and others. While awaiting sentencing, Francis was hospitalized and treated for renal cancer and other medical issues. The felony convictions of four former Navy officers were vacated following allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

Larry Lucchino, who as a top executive with the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres oversaw the design and construction of modern stadiums that evoke their surroundings — Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore and Petco Park in San Diego — and who as president of the Boston Red Sox preserved Fenway Park for generations, died on Tuesday. The Red Sox announced the death but did not say where he died or give a cause. He had been treated for cancer three times. In Mr. Lucchino’s 14 years with the team, the Red Sox won the World Series three times — the first of those championships, in 2004, broke an 86-year drought — and reached the postseason seven times. He oversaw improvements to Fenway Park that included installing seats above the Green Monster, the 37-foot-high left field wall, and vastly expanding concourses and concession areas.

An atmospheric river is like a powerful fire hose with only one person holding it. It could be strong in the San Francisco Bay Area, and little might fall in Southern California, or vice versa. "The Bay Area has consistently been one of the most expensive markets in the country," said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin. Why the New York metro area is low on the listMidtown Manhattan, New York, as seen from Hoboken, New Jersey. That's because the metro area goes beyond Manhattan and the city's four other boroughs, extending into nearby counties. "Even though Manhattan is really expensive, once you get to the outlying areas [in] the New York metro area, it actually becomes quite affordable," said Fairweather. Interested homebuyers in the region still need to earn six figures annually to afford a home, about $197,734, Redfin estimates.

Frank’s partnership with Cruz, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, has been fruitful in the concert hall, but this is their first opera. Their subject is extremely familiar — the love of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera — but the treatment is less biographical and more mythic. But here, instead of the hero traveling to the underworld to retrieve a lost love, the protagonist journeys to the land of the living. In both cases, though, a creative spirit is required to cross borders, and there are dire consequences for any missteps. And rather than tell a life story — which in opera tends to result in episodic, undramatic works — Cruz hews to classical unities, with a focused plot that unfolds on the Mexican Day of the Dead.

We used a professional device called a sound level meter to record the decibel levels of common sounds and environments. According to the World Health Organization, average road traffic noise above 53 dB or average aircraft noise exposure above about 45 dB are associated with adverse health effects. This chart shows how many people in the United States may be exposed to various outdoor noise levels, on average. Scientists believe that pronounced fluctuations in noise levels like this might compound the effects on the body. Nighttime noise shows similar inequities.
