— A Massachusetts judge has declined to dismiss two charges, including murder, in the case of Karen Read, who is blamed in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend. Read is accused of ramming into John O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a January 2022 snowstorm. Her two-month trial ended in July when jurors declared they were hopelessly deadlocked and a judge declared a mistrial on the fifth day of deliberations. Judge Beverly Cannone’s decision, released on Friday, means the case can move forward to a new trial set to begin Jan. 27. She could poll the jury, Weinberg said, on whether they reached a verdict on the three counts or bring in the four jurors to be questioned anonymously.

CNN —Is Karen Read a rage-filled cop killer, or the convenient patsy of a vast police cover-up? That’s the question put to a Massachusetts jury on Tuesday in closing arguments of her murder trial in a case that has riveted the Bay State. After closing arguments Tuesday morning, the jury began deliberations at about 1:30 p.m. and continued for about three hours. A drunken Read then struck him with the vehicle and fled, leaving him to die in the snowy cold, prosecutors say. “Lie, obfuscate, manipulate, alter, and when they’re caught, they just excuse it away,” Jackson said in closing arguments.

Lee McColgan’s career in finance was probably doomed as soon as he started visiting historic house museums. The first one he toured was the Fairbanks House, in Dedham, Mass., the oldest surviving timber-frame home in America, built in 1637. It was 2014, and Mr. McColgan was living in Omaha, where he worked as a sales representative for a large investment company. Despite a rural childhood in Vermont and an interest in visual arts and building, he had spent much of his adulthood working in a cubicle: five years of “jacking in” at a call center outside Boston, followed by several more as a Midwestern “external wholesaler” pitching mutual funds to financial advisers.

For example, a 70-minute train ride from Liverpool Street station to the town of Manningtree in Essex county is the starting point for discovering the Stour Valley scenery that inspired the painter John Constable. CNN —Three individuals have been arrested on charges of operating a “high-end brothel network” in Massachusetts and Virginia with a clientele that included elected officials, military officers and government contractors with security clearances, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. “Pick a profession,” Joshua Levy, acting US attorney for Massachusetts, said of the sprawling client list during a press conference in Boston. The three individuals, Levy said, transported women and advertised them online for pre-approved clients to choose from through several websites and ran the brothels out of apartments they rented. The agent said about 20 sex buyers were interviewed in connection with the multiyear investigation. One customer described getting a text of available options at a brothel, including the women available, the sexual services and the hourly rate.

McCarrick, a former archbishop of Washington, D.C., is the only current or former U.S. Catholic cardinal to ever face child sex abuse charges, with prosecutors in Massachusetts and Wisconsin filing separate cases against him. The case in Dedham, Massachusetts, before Judge Paul McCallum was the first to be filed, with prosecutors in July 2021 charging McCarrick with three counts of indecent assault and battery. A legal quirk froze the statute of limitations in the Massachusetts case after McCarrick, a non-resident, left the state. McCarrick was expelled from the Roman Catholic priesthood in 2019 after a Vatican investigation found him guilty of sexual crimes against minors and adults. Peloton 's Chief People Officer Shari Eaton is leaving the company for another opportunity, she announced in a LinkedIn post Tuesday. Former CEO John Foley left his board chair position alongside fellow co-founder and Chief Legal Officer Hisao Kushi in mid-September. Previously at Amazon, Eaton was at Peloton for more than three years, joining as a vice president in the human resources division just months before the company's pandemic boom. She rose to become senior vice president of people, safety and security officer, and then global head of people. McCarthy elevated Eaton to chief people officer when he became CEO, which was a time of mass layoffs and personnel changes for the company.

Peloton will begin selling its bikes, treadmills and other products in Dick's Sporting Goods stores, marking the struggling fitness equipment maker's latest push to expand its customer base. The collaboration will make Dick's the first brick-and-mortar retailer outside of its namesake stores to carry Peloton equipment. The companies do not yet have a launch date, but said they are aiming to have Peloton products in more than 100 Dick's stores in time for the holiday shopping season. Dick's shoppers also will be able to order Peloton products online in stores for either delivery or pickup. Peloton and Dick's won't vary in its product pricing, although Dick's will not carry the recently announced $3,195 Peloton rowing machine, which is currently only available for preorder.
