In a social media landscape often dominated by playful dances and aesthetic montages, one surprising trend remains steadfast: historical grave cleaning. Stacey Habecker, known as “The Clean Girl” online, caused intense controversy with her upbeat and vibrant approach to grave cleaning. Despite the outcry of comments, reaction videos and expert advice, “The Clean Girl” continued creating and re-uploading grave cleaning videos to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok — getting hundreds of millions of views across her platforms. In some cultures, grave cleaning is part of family duty and tradition, such as with Día de los Muertos in Mexican and Central American culture. For members like Justin Frost, the hobby of grave cleaning came as a natural extension of a desire to learn more about his family history.

I shopped for seasonal fall decor at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Hobby Lobby doesn't do Halloween, so it had decor for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and football season. Michaels was in full Halloween mode, with sections for Thanksgiving and Dia de los Muertos, too. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! That said, I love adding a few new decor from stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels to my collection each year — and I visited both chains to see what they had on offer for the 2024 fall season.

She moved away in advance of the April 8 total solar eclipse. The resort town of Mazatlán, Mexico — where I lived from 2006 until last month — is one of the best spots to witness the total solar eclipse on April 8. A chance to make $300 a night for a weekRumors started circulating roughly three years ago about people renting their places for inflated prices during the eclipse week. One local friend's family charged up to four times the regular rates for their 10 vacation rental condos for the eclipse week. They told me they were offered $400 a night for the eclipse week.

Courtesy Holden Minor RingerCreating walkable communitiesTo prepare for his journey – which started in March 2023 – Ringer started going on longer walks, eventually doing a nine-day walk from Vancouver to Seattle. He started off the journey with a backpack full of gear, but a lot has changed over the months. The journey also opened his eyes to the intense safety risks of walking through a country that centers around vehicle use. “At the start of the walk, I was thinking – maybe I want to walk across the world next.

Día de los Muertos is a tribute to the afterlife, a day meant to honor those who have died and keep their memory alive. Unlike Halloween, which historically was a day to ward off evil spirits, Day of the Dead is more about paying respects to loved ones who have died. Just like in Mexico, Filipinos visit their loved ones’ graves and also create altars to those who have passed. Many people honor Day of the Dead by visiting the graves of dead relatives and loved ones. People come together to share stories of their loved ones — helping keep their memory alive.

A Brunch for Both the Living and the Dead

Stepping into the courtyard of Bombera, the acclaimed Mexican restaurant in Oakland, Calif., always feels like arriving at a party. Papel picado in marigold orange and saffron yellow flutters overhead, seemingly waving guests into the space, an airy former firehouse. But the restaurant reaches its full splendor in the fall, when the dining room is decorated in preparation for Mexican Day of the Dead. “From day one, she’s been helping us make sure that Bombera’s dressed up in bows,” Rice-Cisneros said. And when Momoca, who is based in Mexico City, mentioned last year that Japan also honors the dead by decorating altars, during the Obon spirit festival, Rice-Cisneros suggested she make one for Bombera, hatching a plan to unveil the installation during a party that would bring together their two communities.

Read Your Way Through Los Angeles

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Outsiders often think of Los Angeles as an anti-intellectual place, all Hollywood glitz and no substance, but writers have always been drawn to my hometown. In David L. Ulin’s “Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology,” I read about Simone de Beauvoir’s 1947 journey to L.A.’s Eastside, where she learned about the city’s anti-Mexican prejudice and admired Dia de los Muertos skulls. It’s no accident that two very different, canonical works of L.A. literature climax with riots, even though they were written more than a half century apart: Nathanael West’s 1939 novel “The Day of the Locust,” and Anna Deavere Smith’s play “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.”Is there a book, or a writer, who captures the essence of Los Angeles? With her iconic 1960s and ‘70s essays about Los Angeles and the West, in collections such as “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” Didion helped invent New Journalism.
These are actual questions people asked on Google and other search engines about the Mexican holiday, which is a bigger deal in the US than it is in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo. Many Americans assume Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. It’s not a federal holiday, although the day is celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla with parades and fireworks. If your party game is strong, Cinco de Mayo could even be a state of mind.
The women's attorney, L. Chris Stewart, based in Atlanta, said the Americans died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a malfunctioning water heater. Investigators believe the trio died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Mexico City prosecutors said. Ben Jared / PGA TOUR via Getty Images fileAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, carbon monoxide poisoning is almost entirely preventable. But carbon monoxide poisoning can be especially dangerous during power outages, when people use alternative sources of fuel or electricity, such as generators. A winter storm in Texas in mid-February 2021 resulted in one of the worst carbon monoxide poisoning incidents in recent history, experts said.
Three Americans were found dead at an Airbnb they rented out in Mexico City for a trip to celebrate the Day of the Dead, authorities and family said Wednesday. When authorities arrived, they found all three of the Airbnb guests dead, WAVY reported. The State Department confirmed the deaths of three Americans in Mexico in a statement sent to NBC News on Wednesday morning. Ceola Hall, Courtez Hall's mother, told NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans that her son was a teacher at the city's KIPP Morial School. Maite was one of the 19 children who were killed, along with two teachers, in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May. This year, the faces of the 19 children who died in Uvalde were at the top of altars throughout the country. In the corner, next to two desks and a chalkboard, is a pecan tree, which represents Robb Elementary School. In Houston, the nonprofit arts and culture group Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts (MECA) honored the 21 Uvalde victims, including murals with the children's names. The Marcha de los Niños, or March of the Children, will take place in several cities in a special tribute to the Uvalde victims.

“The business was born 34 years ago, we were very little then, and we started helping in getting the work done,” Torres Alfaro recalled. Many Mexicans also use the papel picado decorations at other times of the year, stringing them at roof-height along streets. Eduardo Verdugo / AP“For some time now, there has been a bit more Halloween,” said Torres Alfaro. That is part of the work, to put Mexican things in papel picado. “Papel picado is based on what can be cut, and what can’t, and that is the magic of papel picado.”Follow NBC Latino on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
