PARIS — The United States and China each won 40 gold medals, in the first Summer Games draw in Olympics history, with America pulling into a tie Sunday with victory in the last event, women’s basketball. But then San Diego native and decorated cyclist Jennifer Valente bailed out the United States by defending her gold in the women’s omnium. Having already beaten Serbia twice in the last few weeks and looking unstoppable, Team USA went into Thursday’s game against the European nation expecting another romp. “I remember, like it’s today, like it was yesterday, dreaming about seeing myself playing in the final at home in the Olympics. “That’s going to be the most-watched game, I feel like, since I’ve been playing in FIBA. Despite looking in sync throughout the group stage and against Brazil, there were signs of chemistry issues in pre-Olympics exhibitions and during the game against Serbia.

NANTERRE, France — Léon Marchand won a fourth gold medal and set his fourth Olympic record of these games on Friday, taking the 200-meter individual medley to the delight of a delirious French crowd. Fans chanted, "Léon, Léon, Léon" as he stepped onto the medal podium before delivering a full-throated rendition of "La Marseillaise." Earlier in the evening, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown won gold in the 200 backstroke in Olympic-record time, edging American rival Regan Smith, who picked up her third silver medal. McKeown bested the previous Olympic record of American Missy Franklin, who had set the mark of 2:04.06 in London.
