Hundreds of hotel workers at a casino near the Las Vegas Strip went on strike just before dawn Friday after a long and highly publicized fight for a new contract. The strike at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas marks the first open-ended strike in 22 years for the Culinary Workers Union, the largest labor union in Nevada, with about 60,000 members. Virgin hotel workers are walking out RIGHT NOW at Virgin Las Vegas for a fair contract! "Workers at Virgin Las Vegas deserve a first-class contract with fair wage increases, and they are organized and ready to strike for it." Culinary Union members last went on strike in 2002 for 10 days at the Golden Gate hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas.

They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. After negotiations broke down in early July 2023, Atlanta-based UPS reached a contract agreement with the Teamsters just days before an Aug. 1 deadline. The Culinary Workers Union announced on the social platform X that the deal came together after a year of negotiations. The lead up to the tentative agreement included a three-day strike involving 75,000 workers in multiple states. The tentative agreement also included protective terms around subcontracting and outsourcing, as well as initiatives to invest in the current workforce and address a staffing crisis.

The main national body of the Teamsters union may have declined to endorse a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, but that hasn't stopped local units from doing so. The teamsters have generally backed Democrats for president in recent races. Harris enjoys broad support from other union groups including the AFL-CIO, the nation's largest labor group, the Service Employees International Union and the Culinary Workers Union. And while the Teamsters' official non-endorsement was a clear setback for Harris, the action has not stopped individual Teamsters units from offering their own statements of support. Kevin Moore, president of the Michigan Teamsters, said the state unit's decision to endorse Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov.

In today’s edition, we explore one positive and on negative development for Kamala Harris' support from organized labor. The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters also released survey data showing more rank-and-file members preferred to endorse Trump than Harris. Still, Harris has won the endorsement of just about every other major labor union in the country (the International Association of Fire Fighters remains a notable holdout). Instead, the Trump campaign appears to be approaching this apparent assassination attempt as an opportunity rather than as a moment to reflect.

“There’s no one that can organize quite like labor,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. All together, labor leaders predict thousands of union members will deploy to battleground states to knock on doors or work phone banks. “It will be determinative,” Butler said of the Sun Belt labor groups' role in the November election. “Arizona is going to be a state that, at the end of the day, will elect the president — President Harris — I truly believe that,” McLaughlin said. “Momentum will carry Vice President Harris and Governor [Tim] Walz through.

But the move likely wouldn’t help many tipped workers, largely because a sizable share don’t earn enough to pay federal income taxes, experts say. Harris would couple her plan to eliminate taxes on tips with a push for Congress to raise the minimum wage, a Harris campaign official said. Many states and municipalities have higher minimum wages and minimum tipped wages, while some states have eliminated lower minimum wages for tipped workers. Just excluding tips from federal income taxes could reduce revenues by at least $107 billion over 10 years, according to the Tax Foundation. Just getting rid of federal income taxes on tips would lead to a loss of about half that size.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday pledged to eliminate taxes on tipped wages for service workers, matching a proposal from former President Donald Trump. “When I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said. Harris would push the proposal with an increase in the minimum wage as well, the official said. “Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” he wrote. “She can only steal from me.”Trump announced a policy proposal to eliminate taxes on tips during a June rally in Las Vegas.

Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to eliminate taxes on tips in the service and hospitality sectors if she wins the presidency, echoing the same proposal former President Donald Trump announced months earlier. The proposal came a day after the Culinary Workers Union, a major labor group in Nevada, endorsed Harris. Trump quickly took to social media to claim credit for the proposal, which he put forward in June at his own Las Vegas rally. "[Harris] has no imagination, whatsoever, as shown by the fact that she played 'COPYCAT' with, NO TAXES ON TIPS!" Banning taxes on tips would require new legislation and congressional approval, which a Harris campaign official later acknowledged.

Vice President Kamala Harris said on Saturday that she would seek to end federal income taxes on tips if she were elected president, mirroring a policy proposal that former President Donald J. Trump made earlier this year. The proposal from Ms. Harris — which she announced in Las Vegas, where thousands of casino employees depend on tipped wages — is a priority of Nevada’s influential Culinary Workers Union. Both Ms. Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, recognized the union in their remarks to a packed basketball arena on Saturday night. Mr. Trump also announced his support for the policy in Las Vegas.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump lately has dangled some very specific promises to his audiences. But Trump’s campaign has prioritized flipping Nevada and the Democratic Party’s historical advantage in Latino communities, and polling suggests they have made progress on both fronts. Trump’s campaign confirmed the former president intends to seek a legislative change. “President Trump will ask Congress to eliminate taxes on tips,” spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN. Trump has published an entire website to host many of his proposals for a second term.

New York CNN —The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, and its instantly recognizable volcano, is soon shutting down after more than three decades in business. In addition to the volcano, the Mirage was also home to other quintessential Las Vegas features like the Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show and a Cirque du Soleil show set to Beatles music. MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and sold it in 2022 for more than $1 billion to Hard Rock International. It’s the second time Hard Rock will have a presence in Las Vegas, with the brand previously owning the now-Virgin Hotel off the Strip. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A union representing hospitality workers says it has reached a tentative agreement with six more hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas and called off a strike deadline for another. The agreements averted a Monday morning walkout threat at several near-Strip and downtown properties as the city kicks off Super Bowl week. The culinary and an associated bartenders union are being given more time to reach an agreement with Virgin Las Vegas, an off-Strip resort. The union then turned its attention to winning the same contract terms for workers at other hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Tropicana Las Vegas, a Sin City landmark for more than six decades, is shutting its doors in the spring to make room for a $1.5 billion Major League Baseball stadium that will be home to the relocating Oakland Athletics. All 30 MLB owners in November gave their approval for the A's to move to Las Vegas. The company's announcement came just a month after the Tropicana and the Culinary Workers Union, which represents about 500 workers there, reached an agreement for a new five-year contract. For veteran workers at the Tropicana, Pappageorge said, that totals tens of thousands of dollars. “In Las Vegas, hotels are bought and sold on a regular basis," Pappageorge said.

Robots of all kinds caused a stir on the show floor this week at the annual CES technology trade show in Las Vegas. The types of casino union jobs at risk could look drastically different five years from now, for example, when the Culinary Union's contract ends. We are filling the need in the market and we are bringing specialty coffee to more places.”But Werner said AI poses a real threat to casino union jobs that don’t require face-to-face interaction with customers — housekeeping, food preparation and cooks, for example. That's especially true for a people-pleasing tourist destination like the Las Vegas Strip, where customers expect top-notch service and experiences, including the latest trends in technology. That makes Las Vegas “a good place to test these things and see how customers react to it," he said.

US President Biden arrives to board Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on December 20, 2023, as he departs for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Biden could be courting Latino voters in Nevada while simultaneously negotiating a border funding bill that includes stricter immigration policies that are opposed by Hispanic leaders. The Biden campaign has argued that as important as immigration is, public polling and its own research show the economy as the top concern of Latino voters. In 2020, Biden carried both Nevada and Michigan, but by less than 3 percentage points. Only Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia were closer among states Biden carried.

New York CNN —The longest US auto strike this century is over after a pretty clear win for the United Auto Workers union at all three unionized automakers. “I don’t like what I’ve seen in my work career with the UAW leadership, where they were too damn close to the companies,” UAW President Shawn Fain told CNN earlier this month. So I like to let the body of work speak for itself.”The success of those contracts is the reason that Shawn Fain is CNN Business’ labor leader of the year. All told nearly 800,000 union members got raises of 10% or more during 2023. The plant will be be reopened under the agreement reached between Stellantis and the UAW to end the union's strike at the company.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas hotel union workers voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve their contract agreement with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, signaling an end to lengthy labor disputes that had brought the threat of a historic strike to the Strip. The Culinary Workers Union announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that 99% of the vote favored the new five-year deal. The breakthrough deals were tentatively reached earlier this month, just hours before the union had threatened a massive walkout at 18 hotel-casinos on the Strip, including Bellagio, Paris Las Vegas, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace. By the end of the contract, Pappageorge said, union workers will be earning on average $35 hourly, including benefits. Union workers currently make about $26 hourly with benefits.

“Las Vegas needs to be full service," he said last month. But by dawn Friday, the union had secured tentative labor deals with MGM Resorts, Caesars and Wynn Resorts, narrowly averting a sweeping strike at 18 hotel-casinos along the Strip. Before the pandemic, daily room cleanings were routine. Some companies say it's because there are environmental benefits to offering fewer room cleanings, like saving water. A spokesman for Wynn Resorts said they already offer daily room cleanings and did not cut back on that service during the pandemic.

A tentative labor agreement with a second major Las Vegas hotel operator, MGM Resorts International, was announced Thursday, a day before a strike deadline set by two unions representing hospitality workers. The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 said a deal had been reached on a five-year contract covering 25,400 workers at MGM Resorts, whose eight Las Vegas properties include the Bellagio and Mandalay Bay. The Culinary Workers and Bartenders Union Local 165, which are affiliates of UNITE HERE, announced on Wednesday that they had struck a deal with Caesars Entertainment, another major resort operator in the city. The unions said last week that their members would go on strike if an agreement with the city’s three main resort operators wasn’t reached by Friday. The union is still negotiating with Wynn Resorts.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — MGM Resorts International, the largest employer on the Las Vegas Strip, was close to reaching a tentative deal with the hotel workers union, the casino company’s CEO said as the clock ticked closer to a union deadline for a sweeping strike. “This deal, when announced, will do just that.”During a break in bargaining, the union’s chief contract negotiator said he welcomed Hornbuckle’s sentiments. The union caught a break at dawn Wednesday when it reached a tentative deal with Caesars that covers 10,000 workers at the company’s flagship Caesars Palace, as well as Flamingo, Harrah’s, Horseshoe, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, Cromwell and Linq. But experts say a walkout isn’t likely now that the union has a blueprint for a contract after reaching its breakthrough deal with Caesars. That includes walkouts in Hollywood, UPS’ contentious negotiations that threatened to disrupt the nation’s supply chain, and the ongoing hotel workers strike at Detroit’s three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit.

Unions representing hospitality workers in Las Vegas reached a tentative agreement on Wednesday with one of the city’s three major resort operators, two days before a strike deadline that loomed just as tourists arrive for a major international sporting event. The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, which are affiliates of Unite Here, announced the tentative agreement on a five-year contract with Caesars Entertainment but did not provide details. The culinary union said the deal had been reached after 20 straight hours of negotiations and covered 10,000 workers. Caesars said in a statement that the accord would provide “meaningful wage increases that align with our past performance, along with continued opportunities for growth tied to our future plans to bring more union jobs to the Las Vegas Strip.”The two unions last week said that 35,000 members would walk off the job on Friday at 18 hotels along The Strip owned by Caesars, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts, posing a major threat to the city’s economy.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The labor union representing tens of thousands of Las Vegas hospitality workers announced Wednesday that it had reached a tentative deal with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, a major breakthrough that could help avert an unprecedented strike at more than a dozen hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. A walkout could still happen if deals aren't reached by 5 a.m. Friday with MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts. Negotiations with MGM Resorts were scheduled for Wednesday and Wynn Resorts on Thursday. It would also follow hospitality workers walking off the job last month at Detroit’s three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit. That includes the Bellagio, Paris Las Vegas and MGM Grand.

CNN —The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165 will strike on November 10 at 5 am PT if a contract is not agreed by then, they said in a news release Thursday. Thirty-five thousand workers would strike across 18 casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip if a five-year contract is not reached, the release said. In September, members voted 95% in favor of a strike authorization in Las Vegas, the unions said at the time. The two unions represent 60,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, and 53,000 workers were eligible to vote in September’s strike authorization, a release from the unions said at the time. Approximately 40,000 members were working under an expired contract that had ended earlier, they said.
