Dollar pulls ahead as markets focus on Trump policies, Fed outlook
  + stars: | 2024-11-21 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
After stalling for three sessions, the greenback was back on the march higher, with investors lifting the dollar index measure against its key rivals closer to a one-year high of 107.07 hit last week. The dollar has rallied more than 2% since the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election on bets Trump's policies could reignite inflation and temper the Fed's future rate cuts. The dollar index held steady at 106.56, up from a one-week nadir hit in the previous session. "The Russia-Ukraine conflict is heating up, which is further denting sentiment towards the euro alongside the prospects of trade tariffs," another "bullish cue" for the dollar index given the euro's heavy weighting, City Index's Simpson said. The dollar gave up some gains against the yen, down 0.33% at 154.91 yen , although the Japanese currency remained under pressure.

The two-stage megarocket — which features the Starship spacecraft stacked atop the Super Heavy booster — will attempt liftoff during a 30-minute window that opens at 5 p.m. If the test flight team deems conditions are favorable for a landing attempt, booster touchdown should occur about seven minutes after launch. Joe Skipper/ReutersThe Starship spacecraft, meanwhile, will fire up its own six engines before entering a coasting phase as it soars through space. During the fourth integrated Starship test flight in early June, the spacecraft endured significant damage. “In 2025, SpaceX plans to undertake a long-duration flight test and a propellant transfer flight test,” according to a recent report from NASA’s Office of the Inspector General, or OIG.

A "Wheel of Fortune" contestant has gone viral for his hilariously wrong answer on the Nov. 11 episode of the show. With only a few tiles missing, the board read "___E _OURSE_F A ROUN_ OF A___AUSE," before contestant Will Jordan gave his answer. "Treat yourself a round of sausage," he guessed — which, clearly, was wrong for a number of reasons. A clip now viewed over a half a million times on X shows Jordan's comical "missolve." Following the silly sausage solve, the game show's social correspondent and daughter of former host Pat Sajek, Maggie Sajek, got Jordan's thoughts on his "missolve" moment.

Was music really better when you were younger?
  + stars: | 2024-11-09 | by ( Jemal Polson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
As I see other generations of music lovers say music was so much better when they were younger, I wondered why. “It’s not that music was better when (we) were younger; it’s that music elicits very, very strong emotions,” said Dr. Rita Aiello, a music psychologist at New York University who examines how people process music and how music and memories shape each other. “Music is episodic,” said Dr. Robert Cutietta, a professor of music at the University of Southern California. A 2022 replication of the latter study in Marketing Letters: A Journal of Research in Marketing found that a person’s music preference peaks as young as 17. It may be because you’re remembering the artists, songs and albums that were meaningful to you and forgetting the ones that weren’t.

Generally, a Trump win is seen as positive for financials given a higher likelihood of deregulation for companies in the space. Traditional oil and gas names are also likely to benefit under a second Trump presidency. One is made up of stocks that benefit after a Harris win; the other would outperform under a second Trump presidency. However, a Harris win is expected to keep current regulation measures in place, and possibly introduce new ones. Private equity giants KKR and Blackstone would also benefit under a Trump win.

CNBC contacted a dozen New York City art galleries and the same number in London to request price lists for their current exhibitions. "The degree of popularity, the level of scarcity and the degree of credentialization [or] … if something has organically captured the zeitgeist," are factors, he told CNBC by phone. Of the many allegations against TikTok brought by a group of attorneys general, one stands out for its focus on the company's abusive use of its virtual currency. That currency "substantially harms children," and the livestreaming feature "exploits them financially," according to the lawsuit. Through TikTok's system, children buy the virtual tokens — TikTok Coins — with real money, and the company gets 50% of the revenue from the purchases, the lawsuit says. The suit says that TikTok "extracts" a commission of up to 50% from these exchanges without having obtained the necessary license. "If you make it look pretty and joyful and kind of innocent looking … it makes it easier to manipulate the children," Robins said.

But there's one hiccup: your retirement savings rate could fall behind and the opportunity costs could pile up. The reason is that the most common default savings rate was quite low, at only 3%. Those who saw a raise below 10% saw a drop in their savings rate and the dollar amount they saved. Those lucky enough to snag an increase above 10%, still ended up with a higher dollar amount saved even with a lower savings rate. For passive savers who are stuck in their ways, it may be up to employers to make the adjustments by increasing the default savings rate.

CNN —Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s chemistry on the set of their new movie was so electric, they didn’t even hear their cue to cut while filming a steamy love scene. During an appearance at the 92nd Street Y on Friday to promote “We Live in Time,” Garfield colorfully recalled filming what he described as a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” with Pugh, during which they both failed to hear the director yell “cut,” leading to an awkward moment. “The scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it,” Garfield said. “And we get into it, as it were, and we go a little further than we were meant to just because we never heard ‘cut.’”John Crowley, the director, was in a different room, next to where they were filming, Garfield said. As time went on, “I feel like we were both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘this definitely feels like a longer take,’” the actor recalled.

“Did the Fed even need to cut rates in September, let alone cut by 50bps (basis points)?” Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, wrote in a note on Friday. Second-guessing the Fed isn’t new, of course. Central bank officials themselves note the uncertainty inherent in their work, especially when the economy reaches inflection points. Even Fed officials don’t always agree with the central bank’s actions, such as Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, the lone dissenter to the Fed’s decision to cut rates by half a point in September. ‘This isn’t exact science’Fed officials aren’t shy about admitting that they don’t always have confidence in how the US economy will evolve.
