Despite a late push, she could not help her side finally overcome a USWNT in a gold medal match. After a cagey first half of today’s final, Swanson finally found space beyond the back line to break open a deadlocked match. It was a sequence worth of winning a gold medal and a fine way to mark a player’s 100th cap. But now, with a gold medal tucked under her arm, she definitely has the cachet to make whatever changes she wants. Hayes led the U.S. to its fifth Olympic gold medal.

The U.S. women's national soccer team is looking to continue its undefeated streak at this year's Olympics as the squad prepares for a second match against Germany in the semifinals. She became the youngest player on the women's squad to score in extra time in a knockout round at the Games since the 2004 Athens Olympics. Marc Atkins / Getty ImagesRodman, along with Sophia Smith, 23, and Mallory Swanson, 26, have been a defining feature of this new era of the U.S. women's national team so far. Winning against Germany would guarantee at least a silver medal as the team moves into the final match. The only other time the women's national team has gone undefeated at the Olympics was in 2012, which was also the last time the team won gold at the Games.

Richardson won gold in the same event at the World Athletic Championships in Budapest last year. And on the field, American Ryan Crouser won his third straight gold medal in the men’s shot put. Jeff Rueter and Steph Yang dissect how the U.S. took the top spot in Group B with one game to go. Swanson crashed the box for the second U.S. goal, catching Smith’s rebounding shot off Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. In the second half, everyone was looking tired, especially with no rotation in the starting XI from the first game. For a second straight game, Williams was brought on late to ice the game as a pressing-minded forward. Ultimately, Sonnet looked the part throughout the second half.

It was a well-deserved opening after the U.S. had hammered at Zambia’s goal for 15 minutes straight, including two attempts off the crossbar and a first-minute toe-poke from Lindsey Horan that went just wide. 🤯 📺 USA Network & Peacock | #ParisOlympics pic.twitter.com/Dnx2xioNTC — NBC Olympics & Paralympics (@NBCOlympics) July 25, 2024Following Trinity Rodman’s opening goal, Zambia’s defense was caught in two minds. The additional open terrain catered to the dynamic forward line of Swanson, Smith and Rodman, as the trio weaved about to find pockets to exploit. After the game, Hayes said the decision was down to mitigating risks. Washington CNN —US women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan will not be on the team’s roster for the Olympic Games next month in Paris, a symbol of the changing of the guard going on inside the women’s national team. The 22-player roster, which includes 18 players going to Paris and four alternates, includes only eight players from the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 in Tokyo, and 10 members of the 2023 World Cup team. She acknowledged the roster for Paris will have less experienced players than previous tournaments with an eye toward development. “I’m not looking backwards, we have to look forward with a group of players that have put that World Cup behind them. And we’re very much looking forward to sort of building on the work, you know, post-the World Cup.

CNN —Interim head coach Twila Kilgore said that the US Women’s National Team will only keep improving after winning a fifth straight SheBelieves Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout against Canada. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made three saves and scored a penalty in the shootout after Tuesday’s game in Columbus, Ohio, ended 2-2. We have a growth mindset, we’re getting better, and like I said at Gold Cup, this team is just getting started.”The victory marked the US’ seventh SheBelieves Cup title and fifth in a row after previous wins against Spain, Brazil, Iceland and Japan. CNN —FIFA President Gianni Infantino says women should “pick the right battles” to “convince us, men, what we have to do” over equality issues in soccer. Speaking at a media conference ahead of Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final between England and Spain, Infantino also addressed the funding disparity between men and women at their respective World Cup tournaments. Infantino described equal pay in the Women’s World Cup as a “slogan that comes up every now and then.”“Equal pay in the World Cup – we are going in that direction already,” added Infantino. Infantino defended FIFA’s investment in women’s football, highlighting the expanded 32-team edition of the 2023 Women’s World Cup as a benchmark for its success in growing the game. U.S. women's national team coach Vlatko Andonovski has resigned, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The move comes less than two weeks after the Americans were knocked out of the Women's World Cup earlier than ever before. The four-time tournament champions struggled throughout the World Cup. The United States had never finished worse that third at the World Cup. The 46-year-old Andonovski was named coach of the United States in October 2019, taking over for Jill Ellis, who led the United States to back-to-back World Cup titles.

It is trying to forget just how close it came to the exit. Forget that the United States has had trouble scoring at this tournament, they said, and that it just cannot figure out how to convert its passes and its possession into goals. O’Hara leaned in and looked around at the faces of her teammates — some sad, some blank, some determined. “I just told them, ‘Listen, guys, we did what we had to do,’” O’Hara said. “It’s not like everyone’s sitting there like, ‘Wow, that was the most amazing performance we put together.’ But that’s where you have to dig deep.

CNN —After the thrill of winning successive Women’s World Cup titles, the 2023 tournament – so far – has brought the US team very much down to earth with a bump. For a team that has been so historically dominant at the Women’s World Cup, performances throughout the 2023 edition so far have been underwhelming for women’s soccer’s most dynastic team. Fans of the US team get ready for the Women's World Cup group game against Portugal. 3 ranked in the world by FIFA, has plenty of World Cup history. Sweden drew with the US in 2015 and also beat them in 2011 – the last time any team defeated the USWNT inside regulation at a World Cup.

The Americans are seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title in Australia and New Zealand and, on paper, are in a totally different league to tournament debutants Vietnam, who are ranked 32nd in the world. "We've got to get through this game before we even consider talking about the second game," said Dunn. U.S. forward Lynn Williams said they would need to be prepared for "a different style of play". Fast-forward to the upcoming Women’s World Cup, which starts on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand, and a host of the game’s best players will also be absent because of an injury which appears to be endemic in the women’s game. But why are so many female soccer players suffering from the same injury? “At elite clubs in the men’s game, players have access to exceptional academies and training facilities from a very young age. Beth Mead starred for England in its Euro 2022 victory but will be missing the Women's World Cup. According to the findings, 34% of women players reported discomfort specifically in their heel and the majority use specialized insoles.

[1/4] Jun 23, 2023; Portland, Oregon, USA; Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Smith (9) celebrates a goal in the second half against the Washington Spirit at Providence Park. Building chemistry on a World Cup squad is no easy feat, as players who once regarded one another as club foes must bond as team mates in a span of a few weeks, forming a cohesive unit. Veteran forward Megan Rapinoe turns 38 next month and finds herself on the same squad as 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Thompson and 21-year-old forward Trinity Rodman count retired great Carli Lloyd's goal from half-field the 2015 World Cup final as a pivotal memory from their childhood. Five players, Rapinoe, Morgan, midfielder Julie Ertz, defender Kelley O’Hara and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher were part of the victorious U.S. World Cup squads in 2015 and 2019. The top-ranked Americans are fielding one of their least experienced squads in recent memory, with 14 of the 23 players going to their first World Cup, compared to 11 in 2019 and seven in 2015. Sam's sister and fellow midfielder, Kristie Mewis, was included in the roster for her first World Cup at age 32. Her Gotham FC team mate, Lynn Williams, also made the cut for the global showpiece tournament for the first time at age 30.

Mandatory Credit: Chris Jones-USA TODAY SportsFeb 22 (Reuters) - The United States got a boost of confidence as they beat Brazil 2-1 to clinch their fourth consecutive SheBelieves Cup title on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas, less than 150 days before the World Cup. "The whole time throughout the tournament, while we're in camp, we're talking about (how) it's not just about this tournament it's about preparation for the World Cup," head coach Vlatko Andonovski told reporters. But 24-year-old forward Swanson has all but assured she'll be part of the equation when they kick off the World Cup group stage in New Zealand against Vietnam. With only two more matches expected before the U.S. World Cup roster is announced, there is scarce time left for players to distinguish themselves.
Women continue to face a significant wage gap that has hardly budged over the last 15 years, with women of color bearing the brunt of the disparity. The year "2022 really is a mixed bag when it comes to gender equality," says Melissa Boteach, the vice president for income security and child care/early learning at the National Women's Law Center. Aside from that victory, there has been little progress in closing the gender wage gap over the past decade. This year, the wage gap narrowed by one penny. The wage gap Black women face narrowed by about four cents in one year, while Latinas' wage gap didn't budge at all.
