“Gladiator” director Ridley Scott recently told The New York Times that Russell Crowe said Joaquin Phoenix was being “terribly unprofessional” on set when Phoenix was getting cold feet and had to be convinced to stay on the movie. Crowe headlined “Gladiator” as Maximus, with Phoenix starring as the villainous Commodus. “[Joaquin] was in his prince’s outfit saying, ‘I can’t do it,’” Scott recalled, “I said, ‘What?’ And Russell said, ‘This is terribly unprofessional.’”When asked how he convinced Phoenix to stay on the film, Scott asked: “I can act as a big brother or dad. It appears Phoenix got cold feet on “Gladiator” as well, although Scott was able to get him to stay on. Variety has reached out to Phoenix and Crowe’s representative for comment regarding Scott’s “Gladiator” set story.

In the 2000 film “Almost Famous,” Cameron Crowe’s comedy-drama about rock musicians in the 1970s, the character played by Zooey Deschanel at one point gives her younger brother some advice. “Listen to ‘Tommy’ with a candle burning, and you’ll see your whole future,” she says. CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has looked into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy, unveiling new features and mysteries within the chaotic region that could help astronomers unravel more details about the early universe. Astronomers used Webb to glimpse Sagittarius C, or Sgr C, an active region of star formation located about 300 light-years from the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. A light-year, equivalent to 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers), is how far a beam of light travels in one year. Astronomers are still trying to determine what has created the vast amount of energized gas, which surpasses what would normally be released by young massive stars. “Webb has provided us with a ton of data on this extreme environment, and we are just starting to dig into it.”

April 5 (Reuters) - When actor Russell Crowe began reading about the history of real-life Catholic priest Father Gabriele Amorth, who claimed to have performed over 50,000 exorcisms, he was intrigued. Crowe’s portrayal of Amorth in Sony’s (6758.T) horror flick “The Pope’s Exorcist” is based on the books the late priest left behind, which chronicled 36 years of exorcisms and other work for the Vatican. However, unlike previous exorcisms, the demon feeds off the exorcist's own guilt and regrets. While he knows this depiction of a religious figure may cause criticism from some, Crowe was determined to stick to Amorth’s accounts. “Everybody is going to have their own opinion, but these are books which are written from first-person experience,” he told Reuters.

Cameron Crowe was one of rock’s top journalists before he had a driver’s license, a 16-year-old traveling the country with groups like the Allman Brothers Band and writing cover stories for Rolling Stone magazine. Yet the prodigy grew up in a San Diego house where listening to rock and roll was forbidden. Mr. Crowe’s mother Alice felt so strongly about the music’s lack of redeeming value that she wrote a letter to NBC complaining about Simon and Garfunkel performing “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)” on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.”How did she handle her son’s immersion in a world she had tried so hard to keep him away from? “I think she got a big kick out of it,” Mr. Crowe says. “She was a teacher, and she felt that she taught me well enough to write from my heart.
