But China offers a unique diversification opportunity, said Bridgewater Associates' co-CIO. Bridgewater's China hedge fund added local stocks after Beijing's stimulus-driven rally. Bitcoin at 3-month high as Trump odds drive currencies
  + stars: | 2024-10-21 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Cryptocurrency bitcoin hit a three-month high in early Asia trading on Monday and the dollar looked set to extend its gains in markets counting down to the U.S. presidential election in two weeks. Bitcoin got a lift from Trump's improving prospects since his administration is seen as taking a softer line on cryptocurrency regulation. The clearest way to express the Trump tariff risk was to be long dollars versus the euro, Swiss franc and Mexican peso , he said. Brad Bechtel, global head of FX at Jefferies, also noted that rising real interest rates were helping the dollar along, particularly against those three currencies. "We expect this trend to continue straight into the election and if Trump wins, likely well after the election as well," Bechtel wrote.

On Monday, stocks struggled ahead of this week's inflation data, which will likely set the tone for short term market action. The S & P 500 was little changed, the Nasdaq Composite made a small advance while the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back about a third of a percent. The first trade is a so-called tail hedge against a hotter-than-expected CPI print, i.e. buying S & P 500 put options. The value of the put contracts will increase if the S & P 500 falls on a surprising resurgence of inflation.

On Friday, a report on American jobs showed a considerable slowdown in hiring, prompting a sell-off in U.S. markets. The Fed is expected to start cutting rates, which are at a more-than-two-decade high, later this year. The currency’s rise spooked investors, some of whom feared a stronger yen would spell the end of a more-than-yearlong rally in Japanese stocks that had been driven by a weakened currency. A popular trade among some investors involved borrowing in yen, and then investing it in markets like the U.S. But as the strength of the dollar this year began to ebb, profits from that trade also started to reverse course.

Swedish home and furniture company Ikea has been cutting prices across a number of countries as global inflation eased, as it boosts its investments in price reductions. The company is further expanding its price cuts in 2024 across all of its markets globally, aiming to dial back price increases that were introduced in 2022. The price cuts, which started in Europe in September, have led to an increase in customers, as well as an increase in items sold by the retailer, according to Öncü. Between September and November, Ingka has invested more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in price cuts across markets it operates in, according to Reuters. In Canada, the price of its popular Billy bookcase has fallen by 20% since the company invested 55 million euros to trim prices for over 1,500 products, Ingka said in January.

The Chips Riding on Nvidia

Investors brace for “fireworks”The stock price of the chip giant Nvidia has marched steadily higher over the past year and a half, propelled by investors’ hopes that artificial intelligence is truly transformative technology — and by their hope that the company’s high-end semiconductors will continue to power that technology. But in recent days, the company became the third most valuable listed company in the U.S., only to slump back to fifth. Its shares will face another big test on Wednesday, when Nvidia announces its latest quarterly earnings, with billions in investor capital on the line. After seeing the stock more than double since May on the back of huge demand for Nvidia’s chips, investors are wondering if it’s close to peaking. Opinion on Wall Street appears divided: Bloomberg reports that options traders have piled into both put options, whose value rises as a stock’s price falls, and call options.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

US banks are sitting on an estimated $650 billion in unrealized losses on their bond holdings. Here's why banks have flexibility in making sure that their $650 billion balance sheet bomb is defused. The bond crash culminated in an estimated $650 billion in unrealized losses held by banks, according to Moody's. How banks can defuse their balance sheet bombDespite the massive unrealized losses, banks are looking at three scenarios that could help ensure losses aren't realized. First, banks could simply hold onto their low-yielding debt until it matures and not realize any losses at all.
