The case before the conservative Florida Supreme Court concerns the state's current ban on most abortions after 15 weeks, which took effect after the U.S. Supreme Court last year overturned a national right to abortion. The outcome will also determine the fate of a stricter six-week ban, which has been on hold since Governor Ron DeSantis signed it into law in April. One justice, Charles Canady, is married to a state representative who co-sponsored the six-week ban. But if the court throws out the 1989 decision, Torres-Spelliscy said, it would be nearly impossible to mount a successful legal challenge to the six-week ban.

Complicating the matter for DeSantis: Trump, the front-runner in the race by far, appears unwilling to provide him with a target. Rival campaigns smell blood in the water as DeSantis has faced questions over profligate campaign spending and his readiness for the national stage. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, released last week, Trump held 47% of the Republican vote nationally, with DeSantis dropping six points from July down to just 13%. Rick Santorum, a former U.S. senator and Republican presidential candidate who participated in a series of debates in the 2012 election, said DeSantis will need to be ready for an “onslaught” of attacks. “If I was on that stage, I would be going after Trump,” Santorum said.

Veterans say they quit Ron DeSantis's State Guard because training became too militaristic. One recruit accused the guard of becoming "a militia," per the Miami Herald and Tampa Bay Times. DeSantis reestablished the Florida state guard in June 2022, promoting it as a civilian disaster relief force in a "natural disaster-prone state." Florida's State Guard was originally created in 1941 to support the Florida National Guard during World War II, but the unit was disbanded in 1947. Unlike the National Guard, which takes orders from the federal government, the State Guard is under the direct control of the governor.

Ron DeSantis said legalizing cannabis would not be on his agenda if he's elected to the White House in 2024. A second flight carrying roughly 20 migrants landed in Sacramento on Monday. Monday's revelation comes after 16 migrants from Venezuela and Colombia arrived by plane on Friday and were dropped off at a Catholic church. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who is also a 2024 presidential candidate, has yet to speak publicly about the matter. He and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have already said they think DeSantis is responsible for the flights. On Monday, a sheriff in Texas recommended charges be brought in connection to the Martha's Vineyard flights.
