Before kids, I couldn't figure out why parents would buy light up shoes or character clothing for their children. I was not prepared for the joy character items bring my daughterMy daughter loves clothes and gets excited when any new item gets delivered. But the day her new Ariel bathing suit arrived was a level of excitement that I've never seen before. A few months before the Ariel bathing suit, we were in Target. It's why I subsequently sought out an Ariel bathing suit because I knew it would make her over the moon.

Scarlett Kiaras-AttariI wanted to pursue a master's in medieval history. Although there are so many great departments in the US for religious studies and medieval history, my mentors at school had all studied at Oxbridge — colleges across Oxford and Cambridge. So, in 2022, I followed their advice and pursued a master's in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. That's the difficulty of expat life — there's the US in the UK version of myself, and I'm always teetering between two places. Without a doubt, my mom expected to be free of dependents decades ago. But here I am, 39, unable to save a cent, in need of her financial support. I was otherwise financially independent, worked three jobs, had a good chunk of money saved, and my life was planned out. Not only was I feeling the effects of financial strain from the cost of school, but physical, mental, and ethical exhaustion had taken hold. She loaned me money to pay off that debt and told me I could pay my rent when I received my next student loan payment.

Even some on the right said the “weird” attack had landed. “Casting your opposition as cringe, lame, and weird is an effective strategy,” conservative political activist Matt Walsh posted Monday on X. Donald Trump Jr. has leaned heavily on redirecting the word “weird,” using it against Harris five times, including in a caption on a video of her high-fiving a drag performer. “The left wants you to believe that one of these people is ‘weird’ [and] that the other one is completely normal,” he wrote. “Well, they’re the weird ones,” Trump said.

Kamala Harris’s dizzying rollout as a presidential candidate somehow pulled off the rare feat of looking organic and organized, fun but without cringe-inducing artifice. Somehow, the Biden-turned-Harris campaign managed to make former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, once America’s coolest political couple, sound like parents in a Lifetime movie calling their child at summer camp. Early Friday morning, the Harris campaign posted a video it produced that depicted a phone call from Mr. and Mrs. Obama, which had taken place on Wednesday, in which they gave Ms. Harris their much-awaited endorsement. Mr. Obama’s 5:01 a.m. post of the video on X had more than 50 million views by 2 p.m. The video begins as an offscreen aide hands Ms. Harris a phone, while she is walking backstage at an event in Indianapolis.

To understand the wave of coconut tree and K-Hive content that’s hitting your social media feeds and your group texts this week, you need some context. She worked for the Kamala Harris campaign as a social media strategist during the then senator’s failed 2019 run. As she told Audie Cornish on The Assignment, the current internet obsession with remixing Harris’ 2023 White House speech invoking a coconut tree isn’t that surprising. “They can create and uplift the messages that are arising organically without overdoing it or making it feel cringe,” she said. “This is where trusted messengers, I think, are really, really important.”Listen to the full conversation on The Assignment here.

As a result, I budget and invest my money seriously because, let's face it, I'm not rolling in cash as a 23-year-old public school teacher. My parents' approach means I'm thoughtful when spending moneyDespite challenges, though, I appreciate that my parents encourage my financial independence. The Triumphant Comeback of the Kamala Harris Meme
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Amanda Hess | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Kamala Harris is a highly memeable presidential candidate. Videos of Harris dancing at campaign events were labeled “cringe.” The stickiest anti-Kamala meme of the 2020 election — that the former prosecutor Harris “is a cop” — united leftists, Black Twitter and Republican trolls in an internet-wide project of framing Harris as either a reactionary or a hypocrite. Since President Biden bowed out of the race and threw his support to Harris, the familiar old Kamala memes have risen again. Her dance moves have been set to Charli XCX songs and filtered through Charli’s lime-green “Brat”-era branding, bathing Harris in her chill hot-mess pop star glow. Even “Kamala Harris is a cop” has been reclaimed, with an exaggerated wink, by supporters eager to fashion it into a winning general-election pitch.

One coconut emoji too many, and Harris HQ could be veering into cringe, losing the coveted brain rot demographic. They've already started to try to capitalize on the memes — a little: The Harris presidential campaign's official TikTok account posted Charli XCX's Sunday tweet that said: "Kamala is brat." The Kamala HQ bio also reads "ready to provide context," which is a reference to another Harris-related meme. Asia-Pacific markets fell on Friday as investors on Wall Street continued to rotate out of tech stocks and take profits from the rally in equities in recent weeks. "There's some profit taking," said Keith Buchanan, senior portfolio manager at Globalt Investments. Over in Asia, traders will be on the lookout for continued rotation out of tech in the region after chip-related stocks plunged Thursday across Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Japan's inflation came in at 2.8% for June unchanged from May, while core inflation, which strips out prices of fresh food, accelerated to 2.6%, from 2.5%. However, the core inflation reading was lower than the 2.7% expected by a Reuters poll of economists.

“Gen Z boss and a mini”? If you can think of two catchy descriptors that encapsulate your outfit and unique aura, you’ve got enough material to get in on the latest TikTok style trend. Some TikTokers are using the trend to celebrate their own style, their unique shine too bright to share with others in the same video. The brand even capitalized on its viral fame with a “Gen Z boss and a mini” bundle of skin care products. Corporate cringe though it may be, the trend is already paying off for the squad of TikTok-savvy skin care mavens.

Read previewAfter nearly 25 years of headhunting for the corporate elite, I've seen it all. But I've seen too many candidates rest on their laurels, assuming their existing Rolodex (yes, some still have those) is enough. I've seen it happen, and it's not pretty. I've seen candidates lowball themselves out of insecurity, and others demand outrageous packages out of hubris. I've seen candidates ghost companies after multiple rounds of interviews or respond poorly to rejection.

But there's no denying that a large number of people, mostly women, found Joe Arden's voice to be exceedingly hot: smooth, insistent, husky, occasionally dropping to a seductive growl. Arden's voice made him one of the most popular romance audiobook narrators of his generation. Last year, a promising new romance author reached out to Blue Nose Audio and received a reply from Joe Arden. "My working name of 'Joe Arden,' has always been just that, a professional persona that labeled my career," he added. For good measure, they dug up Cronin's abandoned trademark application for the Joe Arden moniker, first filed in 2020.

I'd been living in the UK for 25 years, but when the pandemic kicked off in March 2020, I decided it was time to go home. It wasn't until returning that I realized how British I'd become and that "home" was more difficult to define. Four years after moving back to the US, I'm grateful for the personal space, the "yes!" But I do miss the cultivated hedgerows of the UK and the quiet, more reserved style of its people.
