Portions of the trail in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest suffered the most severe damage and remain closed. Towns and businesses need the trail’s trafficThe Appalachian Trail is more than a footpath for many people. Every year thousands of people attempt to hike the entire trail or “thru-hike” it, and about 3 million people visit portions of the trail, according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The total cost of the repairs along the trail remains unclear while officials continue assessing the full extent of the wreckage, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy said.

New York CNN —Comcast is planning to spin off most of its cable television networks, including MSNBC and CNBC, into a separate publicly traded company, according to executives with knowledge of the plan. The spinoff is expected to be formally announced on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the impending announcement on Tuesday evening, said the involved channels also include USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel. While observers may view the spinoff as an attempt to shed cable channels that are losing value in the streaming age, the channels still contribute strong profits to Comcast’s bottom line. Wall Street analysts are predicting further consolidation of major media companies in the years ahead.

The blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy may help people cut back on drinking, new research published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry suggests. Just over 28 million adults in the U.S. have alcohol addiction, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Several other studies have examined drinking habits among people taking GLP-1 drugs who do not have alcohol use disorder. Around 75,000 people in the study used some type of medication to treat alcohol use disorder. CNN —Republican former Sen. Kelly Ayotte will win the New Hampshire governor’s race, CNN projects, completing a political comeback eight years after she lost her Senate seat. Ayotte defeated Democratic former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig in the race to replace outgoing GOP Gov. The race was a test of whether local interests or the national political atmosphere would play the most important role in influencing Granite State voters. Democrats attempted to nationalize it, tying Ayotte to former President Donald Trump and attacking her on abortion rights. Hillary Clinton won there by just half a point in 2016, but President Joe Biden won by 7 points in 2020.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied with three votes each in the tiny New Hampshire township of Dixville Notch, kicking off Election Day in one of the first places in the country to report its presidential preference. By tradition, all eligible voters gather at the now-dormant Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their secret ballots once polls open at midnight. Once every ballot is cast, votes are tallied and results announced – hours before anywhere else, making it a destination for national reporters, who often outnumber the voters. In January, four registered Republican voters and two independents participated in the GOP primary, casting six unanimous votes for former South Carolina Gov. CNN’s Gary Tuchman, Eva McKend, Ethan Cohen, Molly English, Gregory Krieg and Eric Bradner contributed to this report.
