Many people feel “that they’re not getting enough back, that a college education isn’t worth enough,” said Paul Peterson, a professor of education policy and governance at Harvard University. The data says that college education is worth more than ever.”The dissonance shows how higher education has become another slice of the economy where the vibes are worse than the numbers might suggest — and risks exacerbating Democratic losses with working-class voters. Andrew Smith, director, University of New Hampshire Survey CenterThere are many reasons why improving college affordability may not register widely. Given other budget pressures — from child care to car insurance — college expenses simply might not have fallen enough to matter. While Gaetz’s ability to be confirmed appears on the rocks among Senate Republicans, President-elect Donald Trump’s team remains confident he will eventually be confirmed, even if it’s after an ugly battle. Gaetz and Trump attorney Todd Blanche are moving full speed ahead on trying to fill out the Justice Department, according to sources familiar with the planning. In his few terms in the House, Gaetz has often been embroiled in controversy. The attorney, John Clune, also called for the release of a House Ethics Committee report detailing the committee’s investigation into Gaetz, which has been ongoing for several years. Since the Truth Social post, Trump has not asked for any specific Cabinet pick, including Gaetz, to be confirmed via recess appointment.

Hegseth was an Army National Guard infantry officer, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. “I’m straight up just saying that we should not have women in combat roles,” Hegseth said on the podcast. “Who?” Sen. A firebrand legal adviser to the President-elect and a conservative lawyer under consideration for the post of Attorney General appear to be setting the stage for investigations and prosecution of Donald Trump’s legal adversaries, including Special Counsel Jack Smith and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The threats come as Trump campaign aides say that the president-elect considers his choice for attorney general to be his most important single appointment. Paoletta is among several people under consideration to run the Justice Department, people familiar with the matter tell NBC News. All of those people have claimed—without citing any specific evidence— that the federal prosecutions of Trump by Smith were politically motivated. But some are pointing to an issue with far less power in American politics: transgender rights. Between the 2020 and 2024 elections, transgender rights have become a political flashpoint in the nation’s culture wars. And perhaps nothing stoked more conversation than the issue of transgender girls and women competing in girls and women’s sports. “Please do not blame trans issues or trans people for why we lost,” he wrote on X on Thursday. Brianna Wu, a prominent transgender Democratic activist, told NBC News in an interview that the debate over trans rights has “radically shifted” in recent years.

Trump is also wary of special elections to replace sitting lawmakers, especially in the Senate. has conveyed that he is not interested in entering the Trump administration, according to three sources familiar with the decision. The move could prompt legal challenges, as a similar policy did in the first Trump administration. To pressure local law enforcement agencies to cooperate, the Trump team would cut off their access to Justice Department grants, the three sources said. After an appeals court sided with the Trump administration, the Democratic-controlled states appealed to the Supreme Court. And that legal maneuver, in essence, ran out the clock on the first Trump administration. Vitiello said a second Trump administration would also offer additional funding to state and local police departments that participate in the mass deportations.

WASHINGTON — As Speaker Mike Johnson marks one year on the job Friday, he’s fighting hard to preserve House Republicans’ razor-thin majority — and his speakership. I’m going to be the speaker of the House,” Johnson said in a recent sit-down interview with NBC News at a campaign stop in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. "It's going to be a free-for-all" if Republicans lose the House and Trump loses the White House, a third House GOP lawmaker added. 2 GOP leader, Scalise also has not spoken publicly about what he’d run for in the minority. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., is expected to run for minority leader if Republicans lose the House.

Judge Lewis Liman of the federal court in Manhattan said Giuliani must turn over his interest in the property to the women in seven days, to a receivership they will control. The judge’s turnover order of the luxury items is swift and simple, but the penthouse apartment will have its control transferred so Freeman and Moss can sell it, potentially for millions of dollars. The women, who counted Georgia ballots after the 2020 election, will also be entitled to about $2 million in legal fees Giuliani has said the Trump campaign still owes him, the judge ruled. Additionally, the judge ordered that Giuliani turn over his television, items of furniture and jewelry. Neither Giuliani’s spokesman nor lawyers for Freeman and Moss immediately responded to requests for comment.

He sat down with BI to talk about the race, the national debt, abortion, and the state of his party. In an era where college-educated voters have been bleeding out of the GOP, Schweikert is increasingly an outlier, and he knows it. In order to keep looking like his district, Schweikert — a one-time conservative rabble-rouser who rode his way into Congress during the 2010 Tea Party wave — has had to make some changes. But now that Schweikert's sharing the ballot with Trump, he's not sweating that either. But while Democrats are hoping the state-level vote will boost turnout on their side and remind voters of Republicans' opposition to abortion, Schweikert sees it differently.

He said a Harris administration "will build on existing programs, increasing federal spending to make health care more affordable for people." Still, Socal said a Trump administration wouldn't have much flexibility to dismantle or scale back the law without change from Congress. The IRA extended enhanced subsidies that made ACA health plans more affordable for millions of households through 2025 — a provision Harris plans to make permanent if elected, her campaign said. A Democratic House or Senate would likely block any of Trump's sweeping changes to Medicaid, according to Altman. Vance this month also said a future Trump administration would defund Planned Parenthood.

watch nowIn his campaign's TV ads, Pennsylvania Republican House candidate Rob Bresnahan talks about being a third-generation union contractor. It's not surprising for a candidate in northeastern Pennsylvania to trumpet their union ties. Support from unions is critical in Pennsylvania, where union members make up 14.1% of the state, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As with Gaza, US officials say Israel was initially planning for a much larger ground incursion into Lebanon before the US convinced it to scale back. ‘The right moment’ for diplomacyThe US still wants to see Lebanon ceasefire talks resume, officials said, and US officials continue to believe that the conflict can only be resolved diplomatically. Nasrallah and other members of Hezbollah’s senior leadership are now dead as a result of Israel’s operations in Lebanon. Earlier in the day, a reluctant Biden told reporters he’d be “comfortable with [Israel] stopping” the campaign in Lebanon that risked further inflaming the region. Behind closed doors, sources say, Biden offered reluctant support for eliminating Hezbollah infrastructure along Israel’s border and in southern Lebanon, as long as Israel’s operations remained limited in nature.

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Even four years later, candidates’ views on the 2020 election are relevant in important practical ways. Lake also baselessly advocated the imprisonment of Katie Hobbs, who was Arizona’s election chief during the 2020 election and went on to defeat Lake in the 2022 race for governor.
