New York prosecutors told the judge who presided over Donald Trump's hush money trial on Tuesday that his sentencing should be postponed while the president-elect's lawyers file further legal arguments asking the case be dismissed. The proposal Tuesday from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office would need to be signed off on by Judge Juan Merchan to become official. A ruling against Trump on the issue would have paved the way for the judge to proceed with his sentencing, which was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 26. That case has been paused while Trump and some of his co-defendants seek to have an appeals court remove Willis from the case for an alleged conflict of interest. Spirit Airlines said Monday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling with losses, growing debt and a failed merger during the post-pandemic travel lull. The deal comes with a commitment of $350 million in equity investment from bondholders, which it said equates to $795 million of outstanding debt. The Texas Supreme Court has ruled against lawmakers who used their subpoena power to halt the execution of a death row inmate for his daughter’s “shaken baby” death, paving the way for it to proceed. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday handed a loss to Republicans by allowing Pennsylvania voters who sent mail-in ballots that were flagged as being potentially defective to submit a separate provisional in-person ballot. The justices rejected, with no noted dissents, a Republican request to put on hold a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling from last week. The Supreme Court action does not definitively resolve the legal issue, which could yet return to the justices. Many of Pennsylvania's counties, which administer elections, already allowed for voters to cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots lacked a secrecy envelope even before the recent state Supreme Court ruling. Genser and Matis lost in a trial court, but an intermediate appeals court and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in their favor, prompting Republicans to appeal again to the U.S. Supreme Court.
