CNN —Costco is recalling smoked salmon products over possible listeria contamination. There have been at least 10 reported deaths and 59 hospitalizations across 19 states due to the listeria outbreak, according to the CDC. In October, there have multiple instances of recalls like Costco’s salmon products due to potential listeria contamination, according to the FDA, which tracks public announcements. While the recalls come on the heels of the Boar’s Head listeria outbreak and McDonald’s E. coli outbreak, experts told CNN that an increase in recalls over potential contamination isn’t necessarily cause for concern. On October 24, the FDA announced a recall of chicken taco kits produced by Sprouts Farmers Markets over potential listeria contamination.

New York CNN —Sam’s Club has now entered the Thanksgiving meal deal wars. Sam’s Club on Thursday announced a Member’s Mark Thanksgiving meal, which feeds up to 10 people for under $100, made up of the warehouse club’s private label products. That follows Aldi, which released its lowest-priced Thanksgiving meal deal in five years, feeding 10 people for $47, or $4.70 per person. That is about $2 cheaper than a similar offer at Walmart, which owns Sam’s Club, which markets a meal to serve eight people for less than $7 per person. Unlike Aldi and Walmart’s turkey dinner, Sam’s Club is also offering to deliver the meal fully pre-cooked, ready to be heated up and served in under two hours.

In 2023, it began selling gold bars and sold more than $100 million worth of the bars during the first quarter of that year, the company said in its earnings report. CNN —Costco knows you’re using your friend’s membership card. To save you the embarrassment of telling you off when you’re in the checkout line, now Costco will try to catch membership moochers before they even get in the door. The retailer is implementing stricter policies and cracking down on non-members using other people’s cards by requiring shoppers to scan their membership cards to enter stores. Last year, the company began requiring shoppers to present their membership card and a photo ID to use the registers. It reported last year that it earned $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, an 8% increase from 2022.

In a blow to publishers and authors, Costco plans to stop selling books regularly at stores around the United States, four publishing executives who had been informed of the warehouse retailer’s plans said on Wednesday. Beginning in January 2025, the company will stop stocking books regularly, and will instead sell them only during the holiday shopping period, from September through December. Costco’s shift away from books came largely because of the labor required to stock books, the executives said. Copies have to be laid out by hand, rather than just rolled out on a pallet as other products often are at Costco. The constant turnaround of books — new ones come out every Tuesday and the ones that have not sold need to be returned — also created more work.

The reason for that is mostly the American consumer, with spending accounting for about 70% of gross domestic product. On Thursday, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said that his customers are slowing down the rate of their purchases. Consumer payments, as measured through credit cards, checks and ATM withdrawals, have grown by 3.5% since last year, he said. I’m being careful, slowing things down,’” Moynihan said, referring to both consumers and businesses, at a financial conference in New York. This survey shows that consumers feel just the opposite — optimistic about their own financial standing but not about the macroeconomic environment.

Costco’s $1.50 hot dog price is ‘safe’
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Costco’s new chief financial officer has a reassuring message for inflation-weary customers: don’t worry about the price of the $1.50 hot dog-soda combo. “To clear up some recent media speculation, I also want to confirm the $1.50 hot dog price is safe,” Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said on an earnings call with analysts Thursday. With Costco’s leadership change — and other longtime deals like Trader Joe’s 19-cent bananas and Planet Fitness’ $10 membership ending amid rising inflation — some had speculated about the future of Costco’s $1.50 hot dog. If Costco’s hot dog deal kept pace with inflation, it would be three times as expensive today — nearly $4.50. The $1.50 hot dog is a powerful marketing tool for Costco and is synonymous with Costco’s brand.

New York CNN —Food prices have gone a bit bananas — and that includes a famously priced 19-cent fruit at Trader Joe’s. The snack-heavy grocer told CNN on Monday that it recently increased the price of the banana to 23 cents, a more than 20% increase. The 19-cent banana is a well-known deal at Trader Joe’s — so much so that it’s ranked as the favorite piece of produce by the company’s customers. However, CBS News reported that experts from the World Banana Forum in March warned that climate change and rising temperatures can drive up banana prices. Trader Joe’s noted it has been able to lower prices for some of its other produce, such as raw almonds, romaine hearts, organic tri-color bell peppers, and green onions.

New York CNN —Bad news if you’re mooching off of someone else’s Costco membership: The retail giant is cracking down. Costco membership cards are non-transferable, but the company allows members to give a second household card to one other person in their home. But Costco has noticed that non-members have been sneaking in with membership cards that don’t belong to them — particularly since Costco expanded self-checkout. And now, Costco is testing out a system that requires members to scan their membership cards at the store entrance — instead of just flashing the card to employees. Costco is testing the scanners at a handful of stores to see if they help.

Costco Is Cracking Down on Membership Sharing
  + stars: | 2023-06-28 | by ( Lauren Mccarthy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The wholesale retailer, which uses a membership system, strictly monitors entrances and exits and double checks customer receipts. But for friends and relatives of members, there was a well-known hack for scoring Costco’s low prices without paying an annual fee: the self-checkout lanes. Some users found they could borrow a member’s card, or a member’s QR code from the Costco app, and avoid the identification requirements of the regular checkout lanes. The company said in an emailed statement on Wednesday that it had noticed that nonmember shoppers had been using other people’s membership cards, which according to Costco policy are nontransferable, in the self-checkout lanes. “We are now asking to see their membership card with their photo at our self-service checkout registers,” the company explained, adding, “If their membership card does not have a photo, then we ask for a photo ID.”

Since Costco has expanded self-checkout, the company has noticed that non-members have been sneaking in to use membership cards that don’t belong to them. “We don’t feel it’s right that nonmembers receive the same benefits and pricing as our members,” Costco said in a statement. Costco members pay either $60 for a regular membership or $120 for an executive card every year to shop at clubs. Any changes to membership growth could hurt Costco. Netflix has also recently cracked down on members sharing passwords.

Retailers Pull Back From Using Chartered Cargo Ships
  + stars: | 2022-12-23 | by ( Paul Berger | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +5 min
Retailers are moving away from using chartered ships to get around pandemic-triggered disruptions now that congestion at ports has cleared and pressures in supply chains have eased. A representative for Home Depot said it stopped using chartered vessels earlier this year as space opened up in global shipping. Party City started booking space on chartered vessels in mid-2021 in advance of Halloween, its busiest time of year, said Bruce Dzinski, Party City’s director of international transportation. Will Harwood, a spokesman for Lidl, said Tailwind owns two container ships and can carry additional cargo on other chartered vessels. Most other companies, like Home Depot and Costco, relied on third-party companies to operate chartered ships.

Costco’s store results varied regionally, with sales up more in the U.S. than in Canada. Costco Wholesale Corp. posted an 8% rise in sales in its first quarter as consumers sought discounts on bulk goods amid high inflation. The warehouse retailer, which sells groceries, electronics, furniture and appliances to paying members, reported $54.4 billion in sales for the three months ended Nov. 20, beating analyst expectations of $50.4 billion, according to FactSet.
Costco’s store results varied regionally, with sales up more in the U.S. than in Canada. Costco Wholesale Corp. sales growth slowed slightly in the most recent quarter compared with recent years as some shoppers bought fewer big-ticket discretionary items. Comparable sales, those from stores of digital channels operating for at least 12 months, rose 7.1% in the quarter ended Nov. 20. That quarterly figure, which excludes currency fluctuations and gasoline sales, hasn’t fallen below 9% over the past two years. Online sales fell 3.7% from the prior year, Costco said.
