But Kremlin-affiliated and pro-war accounts aren't playing ball, independent Russian media reported. A new analysis found that only 10 of the top 82 political pro-government Telegram channels had registered. Nearly 90% of Russia's top pro-war Telegram channels have been ignoring a government directive to identify themselves in an official registry, per an analysis by independent media outlet Vertska. But the move was originally unpopular with pro-Kremlin military bloggers, who often maintain anonymity and sometimes post analyses and criticism of Russian war leaders. Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of Russia's State Duma, runs the most popular registered channel.

What can news outlets do to regain trust and appeal to new audiences without alienating existing readers and viewers? For the past week, CNN’s media team has been receiving feedback from readers of the Reliable Sources newsletter. Mainstream media outlets have been losing public trust for decades, particularly among Republicans, but also among Democrats and independents. Maybe, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan commented last week, the media collectively spent “too much time obsessing about polling (where did that get us?) As long as President-elect Donald Trump keeps repeating lies and raising controversies, the press will be seen as a hostile force by many Trump voters.

As polls show a dead heat between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in the final days of the race, news outlets are preparing an anxious nation for the likelihood that election night will stretch into an election week. Most major media outlets around the country rely on a handful of organizations to crunch the numbers and make race calls. “We’re also going to be really transparent about why we may not be able to call a race,” Pace said. In 2020, Joe Biden was not declared the winner of the presidential election until Saturday, several days after election night. While Biden went on to carry the state by roughly 10,000 votes, the network came under assault from Trump and his allies, who blasted the right-wing network’s election night projection.

A group of influential Latino organizations penned an open letter expressing “deep concern” over the Trump interview. New York CNN —Shari Redstone, the chair of CBS parent company Paramount Global, said Wednesday that CBS leadership made a “bad mistake” with their handling of “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil’s contentious interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. In stark opposition to what CBS editorial leadership told staff on Monday, Redstone said she did not think Dokoupil had violated the network’s editorial standards when he grilled Coates over the content of his new book. I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. On Wednesday, Redstone said the network’s executives made a “bad mistake” in how they handled the ensuing controversy over the interview. Several correspondents and producers had expressed concern with Dokoupil’s conduct in numerous instances, beyond the Coates interview.

New York CNN —CBS News executives said Monday that a heated morning show interview with acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, during which his new book was compared to “extremist” writings, did not meet the network’s editorial standards. CBS executives told staffers during a daily editorial meeting that the contentious “CBS Mornings” interview last week with Coates, led by co-anchor Tony Dokoupil, had been addressed with Dokoupil. The assessment pacified some employees who had objected to Dokoupil’s tone during the segment with Coates. During the September 30 interview, Dokoupil took issue with Coates’ framing in the book. The gripping interview — intense by the often cozy standards of morning television —has since been viewed many millions of times on streaming websites.

“CBS Evening News,” one of America’s longest-running newscasts, is getting a significant overhaul, one that will put the role of a singular and towering Walter Cronkite-like evening news anchor in the rearview mirror. Just two days after Norah O’Donnell announced that she would depart the show’s anchor chair this fall, CBS News executives said she would be replaced by John Dickerson, the network’s lead political analyst and the host of an evening CBS News streaming show, and Maurice DuBois, a longtime anchor for the CBS affiliate in New York. Additionally, the network named Lonnie Quinn, a local weatherman and Mr. DuBois’s colleague at WCBS-TV, the first-ever chief weathercaster for “Evening News.” Other veteran CBS journalists, like Jim Axelrod, Steve Hartman and Margaret Brennan, are expected to be regular presences on the show, as will other correspondents. Mr. DuBois and Mr. Quinn will continue in their local roles as well, the network said. In some ways, the program, with dedicated weather segments and a cast of frequently appearing correspondents, may resemble something closer to a morning show, or a local newscast.

Al Jazeera, the influential Arab news network, said that two of its journalists were killed on Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike on their car in Gaza City. The Qatar-based network said the reporter Ismail al-Ghoul and his cameraman, Rami al-Rifee, were killed in Shati camp in northern Gaza after reporting from or near the house of the deceased Hamas political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday. Mohammed Moawad, Al Jazeera’s managing editor, praised Mr. al-Ghoul’s courage in a post on social media. “Ismail was renowned for his professionalism and dedication, bringing the world’s attention to the suffering and atrocities committed in Gaza,” he said. The only surprise in the guilty verdict against Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal correspondent who was arrested in Russia last year on phony charges of espionage, was that it came so quickly. No evidence was ever made public, the hearings were held in secret, and Mr. Gershkovich’s lawyers were barred from saying anything in public about the case. Mr. Gershkovich’s arrest, trial and conviction all serve President Vladimir Putin’s goal of silencing any honest reporting from inside Russia about the invasion of Ukraine and of making Russians even warier of speaking with any foreigner about the war. Independent Russian news outlets have been almost entirely shut down and their journalists imprisoned or forced to leave the country, so foreign correspondents are among the few remaining sources of independent reporting from inside Russia. Mr. Gershkovich’s last published article before his arrest, on March 29, 2023, was headlined “Russia’s Economy Is Starting to Come Undone” — just the sort of vital independent journalism that challenges Mr. Putin’s claims of a strong and vibrant Russia fighting a just war.

CNN —For weeks, the White House press corps has been boiling – and not from the Washington, DC, heat. Some feel the White House misled the press before President Joe Biden’s stumbling performance at last month’s CNN presidential debate. “I think this is a credibility crisis writ large for the White House, and certainly as a spokesperson for the White House, this is a credibility crisis for her,” one White House reporter told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the situation. “We are in the midst of a full-blown feeding frenzy,” former CNN White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno said. Sesno and former White House correspondents and officials told CNN that questions surrounding Biden’s age and performance, along with how the White House is handling the issue, are legitimate and warrant scrutiny.

What important lesson can we learn from history to help us in this moment? Seeing that in our past should help us expect that and hopefully brace ourselves against it in our own time.
