In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

Two-time Olympic gold medal skier Mikaela Shiffrin recounted her dramatic World Cup crash, describing one of her injuries Sunday as a "stab wound." The crash at the Stifel Killington Cup in Vermont on Saturday resulted in "severe muscle trauma," according to the organization, which runs the U.S. Olympic ski team. Shiffrin said competing at the World Cup event in Beaver Creek, Colorado, this month is unlikely. Shiffrin won her 99th World Cup event on Nov. 23 in Gurgl, Austria. Last year she matched and then passed fellow American Lindsey Vonn's record number of World Cup wins, 83, becoming what Olympics organizers described as "the most successful female alpine skier in World Cup history."

If compromised, AI systems could be used to interfere with or take control of strategically important national space missions. Critical space infrastructure is susceptible to threats across three key segments: in space, on the ground segment and within the communication links between the two. "In many ways, the threats to critical infrastructure on Earth can cause vulnerabilities in space," Lonstein said. "The consequences of malicious cyber activities include loss of mission data, decreased lifespan or capability of space systems or constellations, or the control of space vehicles." Use of strict access controls, authentication, and error correction mechanisms can further ensure that AI systems operate with accurate information.

A judge on Wednesday found New York City in contempt for failing to staunch violence and brutality at its jails, a scathing ruling that puts the troubled Rikers Island jail complex on the verge of a federal takeover. It would not involve a takeover by the Justice Department, nor would the city’s jails become part of the federal Bureau of Prisons. Nineteen people died in custody at Rikers Island in 2022. There has been “no substantial reduction in the risk of harm currently facing those who live and work in the Rikers Island jails,” the judge wrote. Under a plan approved by the city council in 2019, New York City is legally required to shutter Rikers Island and replace it with four smaller and more modern jails by 2027.

Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers filed a legal claim Tuesday against New York City, alleging the disgraced Hollywood mogul is receiving poor medical care and living in an unhygienic environment at the Rikers Island jail complex. He was hospitalized in April and July, and he had emergency heart surgery in September, according to a representative. The New York City mayor’s office, the city’s Department of Correction and the city’s public hospital system did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “The treatment, or lack thereof, that Mr. Weinstein is receiving on Rikers Island does not only amount to medical negligence, it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment,” Ansari added in part. Weinstein, 72, was placed into city custody earlier this year after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction in a 4-3 decision.

Financial stocks are the best-performing group in 2024 and, even though they're widely thought to have more room to run as a sector, a subset of them are even more favorably positioned. The S & P 500 financial sector has surged 36% so far this year, outpacing both the communication services and information technology sectors that contain all the high-flying megacap technology stocks. XLF YTD mountain Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) in 2024. "If this bull market persists, the upside in those fintech names could be 3-4x what we see in the overall XLF," Ginsberg said. A federal judge overseeing New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex on Wednesday found the city in contempt for failing to stem violence and excessive force at the facility, and said she was leaning toward taking control of the city’s jails. The judge, Laura Taylor Swain, said in a 65-page opinion that the city and its Department of Correction had violated the constitutional rights of prisoners and staff members alike by exposing them to danger, and had intentionally ignored her orders. Judge Swain’s ruling came nearly a decade after the city’s jails, which include the Rikers Island complex, fell under federal oversight in a settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by prisoners and the Legal Aid Society. Since then, a court-appointed monitor has issued regular reports on the violence that has continued to plague the facilities. In the past two years, at least 33 people have died in the jails or shortly after being released.

CNN —Musician Drake alleges that Universal Music Group “conspired” to artificially boost Kendrick Lamar’s searing diss track “Not Like Us” on Spotify, according to a pre-action petition submitted to a New York court on Monday. It has also amassed almost 900 million streams on Spotify to date, according to the petition. Drake is currently represented by Republic Records, a division of UMG and Lamar is currently represented by Interscope records, also a division of UMG. Drake’s petition accuses UMG of paying an independent radio promoter acting as an intermediary, who then paid other radio stations to boost airplay of Lamar’s track. “Not Like Us” became the most successful song spawned by the feud and earned five Grammy nominations earlier this month.

Bitcoin hit a new record high last week, with prices climbing above $99,000 for the first time. CNBC asked analysts for their take on why bitcoin has so far failed to breach the widely-watched $100,000 mark. "There's a ton of leverage in the system right now," Novogratz, a longtime crypto investor, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Friday. Novogratz added that he's advocating investors buy "straight bitcoin" rather than bitcoin-exposed plays, such as MicroStrategy which owns a huge, multi-billion-dollar pile of bitcoin in its corporate treasury reserves. Deutsche Bank's Laboure said she thinks the idea of a U.S. national bitcoin is still far off, practically speaking.

The S & P 500's rise to fresh heights in the new year will not be in a straight line, according to RBC Capital Markets. Strategist Lori Calvasina issued a year-end 2025 target for the broad market index of 6,600. The S & P 500 has rallied 3.2% since Donald Trump secured a second presidential term, raising expectations of lower taxes and deregulation. To be sure, Calvasina thinks there will be 5%-10% correction in the near term before equities resume their march to all-time highs. Israel’s new defense minister has said security forces would no longer apply administrative detention orders to Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, and thus only Palestinian suspects can be held indefinitely without trial. Israel Katz, a long-time ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was appointed defense minister earlier in November and announced the decision on Friday. In 2019, Trump abandoned the long-held U.S. position that West Bank settlements are illegal before it was restored by President Joe Biden. Settler immunity from administrative detention coincides with heightened rhetoric from Israeli ministers calling for the West Bank to be annexed. The U.N. said four Palestinian children have been killed every week in the West Bank on average since the current conflict began, a three-fold increase from the first nine months of 2023.

In an environment of high valuations, one of two "catalysts" could cause a market correction. It has a price-to-earnings ratio above 27, and some have described it as expensive by almost every measure. "We do think that a correction would be healthy, but you will need some type of catalyst for that correction to take place. [It is] still quite healthy, but it is slow, right? "If that continues to slow a bit more, if we were to see inflation tick up again, that could be a catalyst," Arcese said.
