Hyundai Motor reported record quarterly profit and revenue on Thursday on strong sales of high-margin cars and said it would expand hybrid lineups to brace for possible changes in U.S. electric vehicle policies following the election. But Hyundai also warned of an uncertain outlook due to intensifying price competition as inflation and high interest rates squeeze consumers. Hyundai reported a net profit of 4 trillion won ($2.9 billion) for the April-June period, up 23% from a year earlier and easily beating the 3.4 trillion won average of 21 analyst estimates compiled by LSEG SmartEstimate. The net profit was its highest quarterly since the previous record high set in the Q2 2022. Domestic vehicle sales in South Korea, Hyundai's second-biggest market, slumped 10% in the second quarter, extending from a 16% drop in the previous quarter, as consumers continue to grapple with surging inflation and a weak economy.

An “irrevocable” trust? Rupert Murdoch is showing yet again that real life can be more fascinating than fiction. It’s about control of a global media business with extraordinary political power, one that’s still trying to preserve its influence in America and elsewhere. The context: When Murdoch dies, control of the family’s companies, including the broadcaster Fox and the newspaper publisher News Corp, will be shared among his four eldest children via the trust. Under the arrangement, Prudence, Lachlan, James and Elisabeth will each get an equal say in how the businesses are run.

Lachlan, who is sometimes seen as a parallel to Roman Roy, as Business Insider's Madeline Berg reported, would likely preserve the political leanings of the media empire once he takes over. AdvertisementMurdoch's decision to give Lachlan control of his media empire has left the patriarch estranged from his three eldest children, according to the Times. None of the three children attended Murdoch's wedding to Elena Zhukova in June at his California vineyard, according to the Times report. BEIJING — Four of the world's largest semiconductor equipment manufacturers, including ASML , have seen the share of their China revenue more than double since late 2022, Bank of America analysts said in a report Monday. "China accelerated its purchase of semi manufacturing equipment since the U.S. imposed tighter export restrictions in October 2022, aiming to develop its own semi manufacturing capability," the report said. The research found the companies' China revenue more than doubled from 17% of their total revenue in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 41% in the first quarter of 2024. The U.S. in October 2022 started imposing sweeping export controls on U.S. sales of advanced semiconductors and related manufacturing equipment to China. Last week, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that the Biden administration was considering broader restrictions on semiconductor equipment exports to China that could affect non-U.S. companies.

Jain's hypothetical seemed prescient when a quality control issue from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a worldwide IT outage that halted flights and freight, shuttered retail outlets, and caused hospitals to resort to charting on paper. "Insurers have been worried about something like what happened with CrowdStrike since cloud adoption happened," said Dale Gonzales, chief innovation officer at Axio, a cyber security risk analysis company. Fitch estimates that the number of insured losses will not exceed $10 billion, ending somewhere in the mid- to high-single billions and that the industry largely priced those in. The cybersecurity insurance market did get lucky, in some respects, with the CrowdStrike meltdown. "Cyber events that have more of a physical consequence would be much bigger in size or scope in terms of losses," Glombicki said.

New York CNN —Two months after filing for bankruptcy, Red Lobster is close to emerging with a new owner. Fortress is one of Red Lobster’s largest lenders and has financed the restaurant chain’s operations, including a new $100 million loan that allowed Red Lobster to stay afloat during its bankruptcy proceedings. Red Lobster has closed around 100 restaurants in recent months and has said it wants to close several dozen more locations. Mismanagement, competition, inflation and other factors brought down Red Lobster, which has been a pioneer in the restaurant industry. Red Lobster cut costs, removed longtime suppliers and implemented strategies that backfired, such as making $20 endless shrimp a permanent menu item.

Seoul, South Korea —The billionaire founder of South Korean tech giant Kakao Corp, Kim Beom-su was arrested on Tuesday on accusations of manipulating stocks during the acquisition of a K-Pop agency last year. The case is the latest legal twist for Kakao, which runs South Korea’s largest chat app, after the company and another executive went on trial last year for alleged wrongdoing during the same acquisition. Any case against him could jeopardize Kakao’s investments into artificial intelligence as well as its overseas expansion plans, industry experts said. The high-profile tech entrepreneur is the largest shareholder of Kakao Corp, with a 24% stake that he and affiliated entities control. A South Korean court approved early on Tuesday a prosecution request for a warrant to arrest Brian Kim, the billionaire founder of tech giant Kakao Corp, on accusations of stock manipulation during a 2023 acquisition. It is the latest legal twist for Kakao after the company and an executive went on trial last year for alleged wrongdoing during the same acquisition. Prosecutors say Kim was involved in manipulation of the stock price of SM Entertainment in February last year to hinder a competitor, Hybe, from acquiring the K-Pop agency. Not yet formally charged, Kim has denied the accusations, saying he has never ordered or tolerated any illegal activity, the company said in a statement. The high-profile tech entrepreneur is the largest shareholder of Kakao Corp, with a stake of 24% controlled by him or affiliated entities.

Tesla is set to report second-quarter earnings after the bell on Tuesday. Although Tesla reported vehicle deliveries of 443,956 in the second quarter, a 4.8% decline from the year-earlier period, those numbers were better than analysts had expected. But Musk and his stalwart Tesla bulls and broader fan base have ambitions for the EV maker beyond making and selling cars. In 2021, Musk also began to promise that Tesla would develop and produce humanoid robots capable of factory work, at least. Tesla "deliveries" are not an audited financial metric, but are the closest approximation to sales reported by the company.

Republican representatives on Monday called on CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify in front of the House Committee on Homeland Security, days after the company issued a faulty software update that crashed millions of Microsoft Windows devices. The outage caused disruptions across "key functions" of the global economy, including banking, aviation, health care, emergency services and media, the lawmakers said. Kurtz said Friday that the outage was not a cyberattack or security incident, and CrowdStrike deployed a fix that day.
