The Container Store files for bankruptcy

New York CNN —The Container Store has filed for bankruptcy. “The Container Store is here to stay,” said CEO Satish Malhotra in a statement. The Container Store plans to emerge as a private company when the Chapter 11 process is complete. High interest rates have kept many people from buying or selling their homes, and the frozen housing market has spilled over to hurt the Container Store. Holiday shopping likely won’t be strong enough to prop up the Container Store, analysts say.

New York CNN —This year was brutal for a number of well-known companies and their bottom lines. As inflation continued to rear its ugly head, consumers slashed their discretionary spending, tilting some companies to file for bankruptcy. At least 19 companies have cut a combined 14,000 jobs because of bankruptcies, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement services firm. The good store is clean — the floors are swept, aisles open, merchandise in its place. They've walked into a local dollar store or pharmacy or department store and wondered whether there's been an explosion. Stuff spilling into aisles used to be a somewhat isolated problem, the sign of a particularly poorly run store. Gone are the days when supercheap labor made adequate levels of store staffing easy, though I will note that Robyn makes just over $9 an hour and Stephanie about $15.50. If it's no longer cheap or convenient to pop by the dollar store or drug store, what's the point?

New York CNN —Even the power of Marie Kondo may not be enough to save the Container Store. In 2019 and 2020, the Container Store got a big boost from “Tidying Up,” the hit Netflix show from the home de-cluttering evangelist. Credit rating agencies rank the Container Store as one of the most financially distressed companies in the retail industry. The Container Store had been set to receive a much-needed $40 million financial lifeline from Beyond, the owner of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com, that would have put Bed Bath & Beyond products on Container Store shelves. “The rise of platforms like Temu have given consumers some much cheaper options for the type of products Container Store sells,” Saunders said.

If this year's closures are any indication — and if the economy worsens — they won't be alone. 2025 is still more than a month away, but it's already shaping up to be another rocky year for retail. Analysts at UBS project the total number of US retail closures could reach 45,000 over the next five years. For one thing, even healthy retailers like Walmart and Target periodically review and trim their store fleets in the normal course of business. In any event, the year hasn't even begun, but nearly 1,500 retail closures are slated — already roughly half the amount BI has tracked for full-year totals in recent years.

New York CNN —Advance Auto Parts is closing more than 700 locations to shore up the company’s finances following another dismal earnings report. The car parts retailer, which has about 5,000 stores, said Thursday that the closures are part of its “strategic plan to improve business performance.” Advance Auto Parts (AAP) shares slid nearly 5% in premarket trading after it reported earnings that missed analysts’ expectations. The reduction will result in closing roughly 500 corporate-owned stores plus about 200 independently operated locations. The company did not immediately provide a full list of locations set to close. It recently sold Worldpac, an automotive parts wholesaler, for $1.5 billion as part of “simplification” of its business model.

Shoppers walk through the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a shopping mall in Arlington, Virginia, February 2, 2024. As of early May, the company had 503 Macy's stores, including a small number of other concepts outside of malls. There were 352 shopping malls classified as Class A and B at the end of 2016, according to company reports, S&P Capital IQ and Coresight Research. That decline is sharper among Class C and D shopping malls, which fell from 684 malls in 2016 to 287 in 2022, according to the companies' research. Shein has also grown beyond its fashion roots, selling products in categories such as home goods, electronics, and office supplies. A Shein spokesperson said the company's success did not depend on the de minimis provision. The Shein spokesperson said the company had a "zero-tolerance policy for forced labor" and required its "contract manufacturers to only source cotton from approved regions." "Shein suppliers and third-party sellers are required to comply with company policy and certify their products do not infringe third-party IP." Open to allIt's unclear why the NRF rejected Shein's membership application, but according to one of the people familiar, someone with sway is strongly against the company's admittance. The NRF's board has a leadership team and an executive committee. An NRF membership application form that can be found online states: "Companies principally engaged in retailing are eligible for membership in the Federation." Two of the board members said they weren't aware of any instances where the NRF denied a retailer membership. "I don't think they are in the business of turning anyone down," one of the board members told CNBC.

Similarly, club stores resonate with budget shoppers because they emphasize getting more for less. But department stores, focused on America’s middle class, are fading. The victims of shifting consumer tastes were not the department stores that anchored the local mall, it was the small, locally owned stores along downtown shopping districts that were closing their doors. And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. Saunders said one of the primary problem for Macy’s is that its holding company, formerly known as Federated Department Stores, spent much of its resources on buying other department store brands, such May’s Department Stores, and Filene’s, rather than investing in the stores its held.
