Ten active major-league starting pitchers have won a Cy Young Award — and nine of them have spent time on the injured list in 2024. The issue is not only the health of the modern starting pitcher, but the role those starters play in the sport these days. “You’ve got to get the starting pitcher back. But has the starting pitcher crisis risen to that level? If you’re a dominating starting pitcher in this era, it probably means you throw harder than the average pitcher.

On the day they held their first official workout, the Baltimore Orioles announced pitcher Kyle Bradish will open the season on the injured list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Bradish received a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat the injury. “He’s going to start his throwing progression tomorrow, but that progression is going to be something that takes some time. Bradish’s injury is particularly notable because the Orioles already are unsure about left-hander John Means’ status for the start of the season. When they acquired All-Star right-hander Corbin Burnes on Thursday night, the Orioles sent a message to their own fans — not to mention the rest of baseball — by making it clear they weren't resting on their laurels after such a successful 2023. Corbin Burnes is exactly what we needed,” Elias said Friday. And the trade for Burnes is an example of what they can acquire with path No. Baltimore sent a pair of 25-year-olds — infielder Joey Ortiz and left-hander DL Hall — to the Brewers for Burnes. Once they did that, I think we have the firepower in our farm system to make these trades.”___

MILWAUKEE (AP) — After spending the last eight seasons as Craig Counsell’s bench coach, Pat Murphy is taking over for his former boss as the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager. Counsell took over as the Brewers’ manager when Ron Roenicke was fired in 2015. He hired Murphy as his bench coach following that 2015 season. When the Padres hired Andy Green as their full-time manager after the 2015 season, Murphy joined Counsell’s staff in Milwaukee. Weeks played for the Brewers in 2003 and from 2005-14, making the NL All-Star team in 2011.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Zac Gallen settled down after a shaky start and Arizona’s bullpen stepped up at the very end, helping the Diamondbacks sweep their NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 5-2 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday night. Just two years after suffering through a 110-loss season, Arizona moved into the franchise's first NL Division Series since 2017. The Diamondbacks will take on the NL West champion Dodgers in the opener of their best-of-five series on Saturday in Los Angeles. The NL Central champion Brewers have dropped nine of their last 10 playoff games, a stretch that started with their Game 7 home loss to the Dodgers in the 2018 NL Championship Series. Brandon Woodruff had been regarded as the Brewers’ likely Game 2 starter until a shoulder injury shut him down for this series.

Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez (1-0) limited the Blue Jays to one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman (0-1) labored through four innings before giving way to the bullpen. Rays starter Tyler Glasnow (0-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with five walks in five-plus innings. Miami starter Jesus Luzardo (0-1) lasted four innings, allowing eight hits and three runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Six Arizona relievers preserved the victory by combining for 6 1/3 scoreless innings after rookie Brandon Pfaadt allowed three runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno homered against Corbin Burnes, helping Arizona erase an early three-run deficit and sending the Diamondbacks to a 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card Series on Tuesday night. Arizona, which clinched an NL wild card in the final days of the season, had been 0-14 in postseason games when trailing by at least three runs. Carroll and Marte homered on back-to-back pitches in the third, and Moreno put the Diamondbacks ahead in the fourth. TRAINER’S ROOMArizona outfielder Jake McCarthy was removed from the team’s Wild Card Series roster shortly before the start of Game 1 due to a right oblique strain. Under MLB postseason rules, McCarthy wouldn’t be able to play for the Diamondbacks until the NL Championship Series, if they get that far.

The Brewers have reached the playoffs five of the last six years, the exception coming last season. There’s a sense of urgency associated with this playoff berth because of the long-term uncertainty surrounding some key figures. The Brewers were one win away from the World Series in 2018 when they lost a Game 7 at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they haven’t won a postseason series since. Although Milwaukee owns a combined 2-10 record against the Atlanta Braves and Dodgers — the NL’s top two playoff seeds — the Brewers’ pitching gives them reason for optimism. The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight postseason games, a stretch that started with that Game 7 defeat in 2018.

The Brewers' second inning featured nine hits, three walks and one steal. It was the second-biggest frame in Brewers history, topped only by a 13-run fifth inning against the Angels on July 8, 1990. Marlins reliever Steven Okert (3-2) took the loss, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning. Yelich added a three-run shot in the sixth inning after Santana hit an RBI single in the fifth.

He didn’t care that it was a no-hitter. He just wanted the Yankees to win. After two innings, I texted a Brewers fan to say I was worried the Yankees would be no-hit. He replied that Milwaukee didn’t have the offense for it to matter. After 10 innings we both looked prophetic, as it was a 0-0 tie and the Yankees had not managed a single hit off Burnes or the relievers Devin Williams and Abner Uribe.

Winless in eight starts since July 20, Burnes is attempting to throw Milwaukee’s third no-hitter. He combined with Josh Hader on the Brewers' second, pitching eight innings at Cleveland on Sept. 11. August 2 - Framber Valdez tossed his first career no-hitter and faced the minimum 27 batters as the Houston Astros made a pair of third-inning runs stand in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. Valdez threw five pitches in the seventh inning and 10 in the eighth, allowing him to enter the ninth with 81 on his ledger. When I got to the seventh inning, I thought to myself, 'OK, I think I can finish this game without any hits.' The last Astros pitcher to throw a solo no-hitter before Tuesday was Justin Verlander on Sept. 1, 2019, vs. the Blue Jays. The Astros provided Valdez the necessary run support in the bottom of the third, mustering two runs off Guardians rookie right-hander Gavin Williams with two outs.
