Fraser is under mounting pressure to fix Citigroup, a global bank so difficult to manage that its challenges consumed three predecessors dating back to 2007. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Citigroup's stock has been mired in a slump under CEO Jane Fraser. While competitors have been cutting jobs this year, Citigroup's staff levels remained at 240,000. That leaves Citigroup with the biggest workforce of any American bank except the larger and far more profitable JPMorgan. Executives will see cuts beyond 10% because of Fraser's push to eliminate regional managers, co-heads and others with overlapping responsibilities, they said.

Insider Today: Big banks are screwed

It's the latest example of the pressure big banks are under to keep their place atop Wall Street. Before the announcement, the bank's share price was down almost 9% this year, trailing all of its fellow big bank peers in the US except Bank of America. Citi's overhaul represents how big banks are scrambling to stay on top of a financial world passing them by. CEO Jamie Dimon recently quipped he "wouldn't be a big buyer of a bank" in reference to proposed regulations requiring big banks to keep more money on the sidelines. Whether it's fintechs or so-called shadow banks, there's no shortage of players looking to offer services previously dominated by big banks.

REUTERS/Mike Blake Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Jane Fraser is trying to make history. Citigroup’s (C.N) boss said the shake-up she unveiled on Wednesday is the most “consequential changes” to the organization in 20 years. Citi shares gained less than 2% in a flat market following her presentation at the Barclays Global Financial Services conference. The bottom line is that an investor who put $10 into Citi 20 years ago would have just $1 today.

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman confirmed what everyone already presumed: There are three executives in the running for his job. It turns out you could make the case for every top US bank making a change in leadership, either with or without the consent of their CEO. At 64 years old, he's the second-oldest CEO among the big six US banks. When discussing succession plans with Bloomberg on Thursday, Gorman acknowledged he doesn't want this job forever. And at 63 years old, he's not exactly a spring chicken.
The sure thing that's no longer a sure thing. But the shine is starting to come off what is considered one of the safest, and smartest, bets in real estate. The two largest single-family rental REITs — Invitation Homes and American Homes for Rent — have recently seen their ratings downgraded by Wall Street analysts, Insider's Alex Nicoll reports. More on the potential deal, which also might have participation from a former Wall Street CEO. If you want to leave Wall Street but don't know where to start, read this.
It's also a key part of the firm's push to attract retail investors, Insider's Rebecca Ungarino reports. Bloomberg previously reported that both firm CEO Steve Schwarzman and President Jon Gray have each put $100 million of their own money into BREIT since July. But as nice as it is to have the bosses' money backing your fund, that's not the target audience. And while there is a lot of upside to attracting retail investors — its private wealth arm has quadrupled in size to $233 billion in assets in four years — there are risks, too. REUTERS/Chris Helgren/File PhotoSept 21 (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc said on Wednesday it was planning to wind down its retail bank in the United Kingdom, aiming to further streamline operations as part of its chief executive's strategy. Winding down its UK retail bank, which comprises just a single branch, would have no material financial impact on the company, the lender added. In May, executives at JPMorgan said its consumer bank Chase had attracted more than half a million customers in Britain. The UK plans were first reported by the Financial Times, which said Citi is not considering selling its UK retail operations. The bank has begun consultations with its UK retail banking staff, Citi said.
