Multiple Secret Service officials have been put on leave for their actions leading up to and responding to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a source familiar with the decisions told NBC News. Those put on leave include the Secret Service’s special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office, whose office was responsible for coordinating the security plan with local law enforcement leading up to the rally. The source familiar with the decisions did not confirm the exact number of officials on leave and said the number may continue to grow as an internal investigation into the assassination attempt continues. RealClearPolitics was first to report that Secret Service personnel had been placed on leave. He is head of the FBI’s field office in Pittsburgh, not the Secret Service’s.

But his track record of handling recent crises in Russia reveals a different side of his presidential persona: one of paralysis and indecision. Despite a claim of responsibility from ISIS-K, he continued to insist that Ukraine, and the West had played a role. Dmytro Kholod, commander of Ukraine’s “Nightingale” battalion, currently in Kursk, told CNN by phone on Wednesday that he has noticed a shift in the behavior of Russian troops. It is just a strategy for perpetuating war and allowing Russia to wait us all out,” said Ryan. “Now we see that when he’s really presented with a crisis, he’s not a cornered rat, he’s just like an imposter.

Three officials from different countries said the measured response comes as they are mindful of what happened after Maduro’s 2018 reelection. Then, the vote was quickly condemned as a sham and led to the most severe sanctions yet on the OPEC nation. In Washington, which under Republican President Donald Trump blocked Venezuela’s critical oil exports, there seems little appetite for more severe sanctions. The European Union last week said there was not enough evidence to support Maduro’s victory as announced by the CNE. Read previewOn Tuesday, Elon Musk's X fulfilled his promise to sue advertisers over their boycotting of the platform. GARM creates frameworks to provide common definitions around areas like hate speech and misinformation; it's voluntary whether advertisers use them. It doesn't rank platforms on these issues, and its role isn't to advise advertisers on where to spend their dollars. US advertisers are also protected by the First Amendment to spend or not spend on whichever media platforms they please. If the X suit moves into the discovery phase, there could be a whole lot more.

It also normalizes prioritizing our mental health, reducing the stigma, shame and isolation that surround mental illness. X filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, a coalition of major advertisers, claiming that it had violated antitrust laws by coordinating with brands to dissuade them from spending money on the social media platform. “The illegal behavior of these organizations and their executives cost X billions of dollars,” wrote Linda Yaccarino, X’s chief executive, in an open letter to advertisers. “People are hurt when the marketplace of ideas is undermined and some viewpoints are not funded over others as part of an illegal boycott.”With the lawsuit, X effectively declared war on advertisers, which provide the bulk of the social media company’s revenue. Since Mr. Musk acquired the company and promised to usher in a new era of unfettered free speech, many advertisers have limited their spending on X, concerned by reports of rising hate speech and misinformation there. By pursuing legal action against GARM, Mr. Musk continued to break with the leaders of other social media companies, who have forged close relationships with advertisers and been responsive to their concerns about offensive online content.

Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

CNN —A week after announcing her run for president, Kamala Harris has yet to tell voters how she will address the key issues facing the nation. Harris has also touted the Biden administration’s efforts to lower drug costs, reduce child poverty, forgive student loan debt and remove medical debt from credit reports. Hefty student debt loads are also an area of interest to Harris. Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, in a defiant address to members of Congress on Wednesday, defended his country’s war with Hamas in Gaza and criticized American protesters and international human rights groups. Some of his remarks have been disputed by human rights groups, and others are unverifiable or lacked context. What Was Said“The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has shamefully accused Israel of deliberately starving the people of Gaza. Israel has enabled more than 40,000 aid trucks to enter Gaza. But the number of trucks allowed into the strip and the amount of aid they carry have been in dispute.

Bernice Johnson Reagon, whose stirring gospel voice helped provide the soundtrack of the civil rights movement, then went on to become a cultural historian, a curator at the Smithsonian Institution and the founder of the women’s a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, died on Tuesday in Washington. Her death, in a hospital, was confirmed by her daughter, Toshi Reagon, who did not give a cause. She was an original member in 1962 of the Freedom Singers, a vocal quartet that provided anthems of defiance for civil rights protesters preparing to confront the police or as they were hauled away to jail. The Freedom Singers were associated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which sent them across the South as well as to the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island in 1963. Ms. Reagon once wrote, “I sang and heard the freedom songs and saw them pull together sections of the Black community at times when other means of communication were ineffective.”

Even the European members of NATO say that they must do more to defend themselves as the war in Ukraine grinds on and the United States shifts its priorities to Asia and a rising China. In fact, European member states have made considerable progress in the last few years to restore more credibility to deterrence against Russia. But they began from a low base, having cut military spending sharply after the collapse of the Soviet Union and reacting with complacency to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. There is a lot more that the Europeans should do to become less dependent on the United States, NATO officials and analysts said this week during the alliance summit in Washington. That includes committing more money to defense, building up arms manufacturing and coordinating the purchase of weapons systems that could replace those now provided solely by the Americans.

France and Britain held elections last week, and the big winner turned out to be … tactical voting. In the United States, President Biden’s main pitch to voters has been a call to vote against Donald Trump. But in the United States, political parties have more difficulty coordinating to shape voters’ choices. Understanding how the French and British results were achieved is, of course, a useful way to understand the political situation in those countries. But it can also shed light on the current situation in the United States, where political parties’ struggles to coordinate have had significant consequences.
