Google proposes fresh tweaks to search results in Europe
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Google has proposed more changes to its search results in Europe after some smaller rivals complained about lower traffic to their sites resulting from previous tweaks by the Alphabet unit and as EU antitrust regulators consider levying charges against the company under new EU tech rules. Under the Digital Markets Act, Google is prohibited from favouring its products and services on its platform. The latter three groups said their direct booking clicks have fallen by 30% due to recent Google changes. "We think the latest proposal is the right way to balance the difficult trade-offs that the DMA involves," Bethell said. "We're very reluctant to take this step, as removing helpful features does not benefit consumers or businesses in Europe," Bethell said.

EU challenges Chinese brandy tariffs at WTO
  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The EU Commission said on Monday it had formally brought the provisional anti-dumping measures imposed by China on imports of EU brandy to the World Trade Organization, the latest development amid trade tensions between the two blocs. France's trade ministry said last month it would work with the European Commission to challenge Beijing's tariffs, which came after the European Union voted for duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles. China's commerce ministry said it had received an EU consultation request and would handle the matter according to WTO rules. France, whose producers including LVMH , Remy Cointreau and PernodRicard , export huge amounts of spirits to the Asian country, was seen as the main targets of the brandy tariffs following Paris's outspoken support of the Commission's efforts to protect the domestic EV market. French brandy shipments to China reached $1.7 billion last year and made up 99% of China's imports of the drink.

Carr is an ally of Elon Musk and has previously gone to bat for his company, Starlink. President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Brendan Carr to chair the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) isn't just a win for conservative opponents of Big Tech. Elon Musk has transformed long-dormant industries, and he’s developed a first principles “production algorithm” to deliver results. In 2022, the FCC denied SpaceX nearly $886 million in government subsidies to provide satellite internet access in rural areas via the company's Starlink service. It's still proving itself as a viable internet service provider and is relatively expensive for the quality, CNN reported in August.

Critics of the proposed tariffs say the policy could lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. That leaves Asia and Europe having to quickly consider ways to mitigate the future impact of export tariffs, and whether to retaliate or to try to negotiate a get-out deal. But economists also say that the EU could try to use the carrot instead of the stick with the U.S., suggesting there are three other ways Europe might try to stop, limit or avoid Trump's likely tariff policy altogether. Major equipment suppliers in Europe say that U.S. chip designers are calling on them to lower their water temperatures to accommodate the hotter AI chips, according to Herbert Radlinger, managing director at NDC-GARBE. Energy efficiency is high on the European Commission's agenda, as it seeks to reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030. The EU predicted in 2018 that energy consumption of data centers could rise 28% by 2030, but the advent of AI is expected to boost that number two or threefold in some countries. Many of the recent discussions have focused on different ways to source "prime power" for AI data centers and for the potential for more collaboration with utilities, said Steven Carlini, chief advocate of AI and data centers and vice president at Schneider Electric. Liquid cooling will require a "reconfiguration," Gunen explained, adding that new data centers are already coming ready with this technology.

Verify voter registration info with official state sources to avoid falling for them. The three most common scams around elections are voter registration scams, fake surveys and polls, and political donation scams, experts say. Fake surveys and polls that prey on people's heightened emotions during election seasons are also common, NASS says. Another common sign that a voter registration message could be a scam is if the messenger says you must pay to complete your voter registration. To register to vote, or to find out if your Social Security Number is required for voter registration in your state, the FTC says to contact your local election office or check the US Election Assistance Commission's National Voter Registration Form.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation, is seeking communications between the administration and social media companies, like Facebook-owner Meta. “The Biden-Harris Administration has advertised its willingness to manipulate the content of social media sites,” Mace wrote, pointing to the administration’s 2021 admission that it worked with social media companies to flag misinformation on their platforms, including related to Covid-19. “The White House has not apologized for this activity or indicated that it would cease and desist from engaging in such behavior," Mace continued. But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. Here are some of the ways Bank of America analysts think the upcoming election results could affect the stock market. Harris presidency, split government A victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the White House, plus a Republican-controlled Congress, could be "the best outcome" for online media companies, according to Bank of America analyst Justin Post. He noted that Harris is likely to enforce a potential ban on TikTok — which could boost Meta Platforms and Snapchat . Trump president, split government A win for Republican candidate Donald Trump and a split government would be the best-case scenario for bank stocks, per analyst Ebrahim Poonawala. On the other hand, a Trump presidency would be viewed positively by gig-economy companies, including Uber and Lyft, according to analyst Post.

“The global water crisis is a tragedy but is also an opportunity to transform the economics of water — and to start by valuing water properly so as to recognize its scarcity,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization and one of the commission’s co-chairs in a statement. With nearly three billion people already in areas experiencing unstable water trends and several cities sinking due to the loss of below-ground water, densely populated areas such as northwestern India, northeastern China and southern and eastern Europe will bear the brunt of global water mismanagement, the report says. “The global water crisis is a ticking time bomb. Even so, a lack of public funds being devoted to water issues by lawmakers around the world will do little to solve the problem. Governments “can’t even react to the symptoms of the water problem, let alone solve the problems if they’re being fiscally strangled,” said UCL's Mazzucato.

FBI agents on Thursday arrested an Alabama man for his alleged role in the Jan. 9 hack of the Securities and Exchange Commission's X account, which sent the price of bitcoin spiking by more than $1,000, the Department of Justice announced. The tweet said, "Today the SEC grants approval for #Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national securities exchanges." Shortly afterward, the SEC regained control of its social media account, and announced the tweet was false and the result of a hack. A day after the hack, the SEC approved rule changes that allowed the creation of bitcoin ETFs in the United States. SpaceX has sued the California Coastal Commission. Legal experts said Musk will need to prove the commission would have granted the flights, if not for Musk's politics. In the lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, Musk's SpaceX accused the commission of '"unconstitutional overreach" after members criticized his political leanings during a meeting about whether to approve more frequent SpaceX launches off the California coastline.
