To hear agents, lawyers, and producers tell it, the Hollywood they're going back to is more risk-averse than ever. Think of the "Suits LA" spinoff of the USA Networks show that was popularized by Netflix, and shows with big stars attached to them. Even big stars are getting slightedThere's an overall feeling that Hollywood has become too risk-averse. But in the meantime, the dearth of shows being ordered will take its toll on Hollywood. "There's just some people who are not going to be able to survive this dark period," a second lawyer said.

Comcast's Peacock, which streamed an NFL playoff game in January, has another game scheduled for this fall. AdvertisementRemember when Peacock hosted an NFL playoff game in January, which meant that everyone who wanted to watch Travis Kelce play football — and/or watch Taylor Swift watch him play football — had to subscribe to Comcast's streaming service? Well, get ready for round 2: Peacock will have another exclusive NFL game in September, featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and a team to be named later. This one won't be a playoff game, so it won't have anything like the national interest — and the complaints from angry NFL fans — the last Peacock game generated. And subscription tracking service Antenna estimated that nearly 3 million people signed up for Peacock to watch the game.

Now it's in "live sports entertainment" via a $5 billion pro wrestling deal with TKO. One big reason the deal could work: Netflix wasn't in the ads business. That's when a new $5 billion, 10-year deal with TKO Group will kick in and bring Raw, the weekly WWE pro wrestling show currently airing on Comcast's USA network, to Netflix in the US and other countries. Now it's here, in what appears to be the biggest licensing deal Netflix has ever made. And this deal is a rights deal, not an outright purchase.

(Reuters) - More people in the U.S. turned to traditional TV for news and drama shows in August, with the start of the back-to-school season making a slight dent on the streaming viewership, market researcher Nielsen said. The combined share of broadcast and cable television, rose to 50.6% of total TV usage in August from 49.6% in July, according to Nielsen's monthly report on the state of the television market. Streaming saw a sequential decline of 1.6% in viewers to 38.3% last month, but still accounted for the largest share of viewership. Disney owns two-thirds of Hulu, while Comcast owns the rest. "Hulu has far greater value than when they struck the $27 billion agreement with Disney ... Comcast wants to get maximum value out of this." Hulu had 48.3 million subscribers at the end of the most recent quarter, compared with 24 million paid subscribers for Comcast's Peacock streaming service and 105.7 million global subscribers for Disney+. Greenfield applauded Disney CEO Bob Iger for agreeing to accelerate the Hulu purchase, saying that waiting until next year is hampering Disney's strategic flexibility. "Whatever Disney chooses to do, having partial ownership of Hulu with Comcast makes anything else they want to do more challenging," Greenfield said.

The decline of traditional TV continues, even as the prices of streaming services rise. Total traditional TV usage — comprised of broadcast and pay-TV — dropped below 50% in July for the first time ever, according to Nielsen's monthly streaming report, The Gauge. Usage among pay-TV customers fell to 29.6% of TV, while broadcast dropped to a 20% share during the month. Many consumers left the traditional TV bundle due to its steep prices. Lackluster streaming subscriber growth hasn't helped much in their bid for profitability, Macquarie noted in its report.

Netflix's new ad-supported tier accounted for 13% of subscribers in its first month, new Evercore research found. Evercore believes the ad tier is driving incremental subscriber growth for Netflix. Netflix's ad tier entered a crowded field of streaming services, including ad-supported versions, from Disney's Hulu to Comcast's Peacock to Warner Bros. Netflix's ad tier was followed close behind Disney+ with Ads launching in December, and Warner plans to launch a combined Discovery+-HBO Max app in spring with an ad-supported tier.
