Founders of some of Europe's largest technology unicorns on Monday backed an open letter calling for a "tech renaissance" fueled by the creation of a single pan-European entity to promote startups and innovation in the bloc. But because of that, our startup scene is fragmented," read the open letter, which was published Monday on a newly created website for the EU Inc initiative. This results in "stifled momentum, unrealized potential, and an artificial limit on our startups' chances of success." So-called 28th regimes are proposed legal frameworks within the EU that offer an alternative to member states' own national rules instead of replacing them. The new structure of EU Inc would "standardize investment processes, simplify cross-border operations, and create a unified employee stock options framework" to help European startups scale rapidly and attract more capital, according to a Monday press release.

Princess Diana’s handwritten letters go on sale

CNN —Princess Diana’s letters to her family’s former housekeeper are going on sale, providing an “insight” into her life behind closed doors, including wedding preparations to the then-Prince Charles, and details of Prince Harry and Prince William’s childhood relationship. “[Collison] was a constant in Diana’s life, and remained so all her life,” Luke Macdonald, head of art and estates at Sworders, told CNN Thursday. “They were very close,” said Macdonald, adding that the two would correspond for birthdays, Christmases, and even before Diana’s wedding to then-Prince Charles. One letter dated July 8, 1981 – three weeks before the royal wedding – was handwritten by Diana on Buckingham Palace stationary, telling Collison about the pre-wedding preparations. Another letter, written 10 days after the birth of Prince Harry in 1984, thanks Collison for a gift she sent the newborn.

Louis Lehot, a Silicon Valley law-firm partner, specializes in taking companies from startup to IPO. The IPO market is expected to pick up later this year, so Business Insider emailed Silicon Valley lawyer Louis Lehot, a partner at Foley & Lardner, for advice on how startups should prepare for life as public companies. Are public market investors generally keen to invest in IPOs, or are they focused elsewhere? Public market investors are selective, focusing on established profitability and sustainable growth over speculative, high-growth stories. What are the key process changes companies need to make ahead of an IPO?

New York CNN —Buying or selling a stock is about to get a lot snappier starting next Tuesday. But that doesn’t mean it’ll get smoother, at least right away — and some financial firms are preparing to handle any possible bumpiness. Clearinghouses, which sit between buyers and sellers, collect margins from traders as evidence that they can afford to make the transaction. Baird has had a T+1 committee in place since last summer to ensure such hiccups don’t happen, Lee said. “The existing two-day period to settle trades exposes investors and the industry to unnecessary risk and is ripe for change,” Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said in a February 2021 release.

New York CNN —Meta this week appointed a group of outside advisors to provide guidance on its artificial intelligence strategy. The four-person advisory group is composed entirely of White men. The situation mirrors an incident last year at OpenAI when, in the wake of a leadership shakeup, it came under fire for appointing a board composed entirely of White men. The large language models that underpin AI systems are trained on vast troves of data, often written by humans and coming from the internet. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the council’s lack of diversity.

It hasn't emerged unscathed, seeing its private valuation cut sharply during the startup crash. Stripe was valued at $65 billion as of the tender offer it completed in February, an increase from its last private valuation of $50 billion – albeit still far from its high of $95 billion in 2021. In its annual letter published in March, Stripe revealed that it surpassed $1 trillion in total payment volume in 2023, up 25% from 2022. "Stripe's business is the healthiest it's ever been," president and co-founder John Collison told CNBC in April. Stripe says it's also benefiting from a new wave of optimism in Silicon Valley, even if it isn't primarily an AI company.

Rising interest rates crushed technology valuations and had a chilling effect on Silicon Valley. Stripe had to take a major haircut along with the rest of the industry as soaring inflation and rising interest rates, starting in 2022, pushed investors out of the riskiest assets, lifted borrowing costs and and forced startups to tighten their belts. "Valuations are a product of interest rates," Collison said. While many tech companies took a hit in 2022 and 2023, Collison said the rising interest rate environment succeeded in flushing out the "wackiest" startup ideas, leaving the best ones to get funded. He pointed to an "overfunding" of marginally good ideas, and "zombie companies" taking too long to go bust.

Stripe put its technology at the center of the growing internet economy, helping the fintech become one of the highest-valued private companies in the world. The San Francisco-based company, which provides payment software for e-commerce businesses, has followed its mission of "increasing the GDP of the Internet" since its founding in 2010 by brothers John and Patrick Collison. The growth of e-commerce during the Covid-19 pandemic helped turbocharge the company's revenue, as well as the revenue of the hundreds of companies that handle their payments with Stripe, including Instacart, DoorDash, Shopify and Lyft. In January, Stripe expanded its long-time partnership with the biggest e-commerce seller of all, Amazon , and it now processes a significant portion of Amazon's total payments volume across its businesses in the U.S., Europe, and Canada, from Prime to Audible, Kindle, and Amazon Pay.

Stripe’s $50 bln reset is relative sign of health
  + stars: | 2023-03-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, March 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Stripe’s valuation cut is arguably still a relative sign of strength. The newly attained price tag is a 53% cut from its 2021 valuation of $95 billion. And by some metrics Stripe seems to be valued at a discount relative to its publicly listed peers. Stripe’s $50 billion is 3.5 times last year’s gross revenue, while Dutch payment firm Adyen (ADYEN.AS) trades on a multiple of 4.7 times. The valuation cut reflects the reality of how an economic slowdown affects fintech businesses like Stripe.
