President-elect Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell could be on a policy collision course in 2025 depending on how economic circumstances play out. That in turn could infuriate Trump, who lashed Fed officials including Powell during his first term in office for not relaxing monetary policy quickly enough. Though Powell became Fed chair in 2018, after Trump nominated him for the position, the two clashed often about the direction of interest rates. Should the results start to show up in the data, the Powell Fed may be tempted to hold tougher on monetary policy against inflation. "They're going to look at a very nontraditional approach to policy that Trump is bringing forward but put it through a very traditional economic lens," he said.

Tesla is recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks to replace defective drive inverters, according to notices made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday. It's the sixth recall of the Cybertruck since the angular steel pickup went on sale about a year ago. Tesla addressed the previous Cybertruck recall with an over-the-air software update to fix an issue that caused images from the truck's backup cameras to not display correctly after the driver shifted into reverse. The latest Cybertruck recall requires the replacement of a part called a drive inverter, which provides power to the wheels of the vehicle. Such a scenario would entail higher inflation, higher rates, and falling stock prices, Roubini predicted. "That's going to crowd economic growth, and bond yields above 5% would imply a correction of stock prices and negative impacts on the economy." AdvertisementOther experts have warned some of Trump's policies could lead to higher inflation and interest rates, with his tariff plan attracting significant criticism from economists. Some of Trump's policies — like his plans to loosen regulation — could prop up business activity and fuel growth, Roubini noted. "I think markets are still in a wait-and-see to figure out whether the policies are going to be hurting the economy," Roubini said.

The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months, conducting a variety of experiments and maintaining the structure. China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of U.S. concerns over the overall control over the space program by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm. China’s moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. and others, including Japan and India. Besides putting a space station into orbit, the Chinese space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. China’s space authorities say they have measures in place in case their astronauts have to return to Earth earlier.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.— Despite calls to consider retirement, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returned to the football field Sunday, playing his first game since he sustained the third concussion of his professional career last month. The crowd erupted into cheers, chanting, "Tua, Tua, Tua!" Tagovailoa told reporters last week he opted not to wear a Guardian Cap, saying it was a "personal choice." The NFL’s top doctor said Tagovailoa would gain minimal benefit because he already wears a newer, more protective helmet. Another fan, Brandon Derber, said, "If he wants to keep playing football, he should keep playing football, so, and I think honestly the way he's acting, he wants to perform pretty well."

He had been placed on the injured reserve list and was eligible to return to play this week provided he cleared protocol. The Dolphins went 1-3 without their signal caller, as the offense averaged a league-low 8.75 points per game during his absence. CNN —The Justice Department has reached a settlement for more than $100 million with the two corporations that owned and operated the container ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. In its filing last month, the Justice Department said that the “tragedy was entirely avoidable,” pointing to alleged failures in the ship’s infrastructure. Prosecutors wrote that, instead of fixing longstanding problems with their electrical transformer, the companies “jury-rigged their ship” with makeshift braces that repeatedly broke.

But even before the blaze, the Waikato wetland, like many other unique habitats in New Zealand, was at risk due to environmental degradation and the climate crisis. It hit the planet about 3.26 billion years ago and is estimated to have been up to 200 times larger than the space rock that later killed the dinosaurs. The new findings, published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, suggest that this massive collision not only brought destruction to Earth, but also helped early life thrive. The research has been a passion project for Drabon, who was inspired by numerous previous studies that showed the potential impact a meteorite collision can have on life forms. “We have long known that on the young Earth meteorite impacts were both more frequent and, on average, larger than today,” said Andrew Knoll, a Harvard geologist and study co-author. “While people have speculated about the potential biological and environmental consequences of ancient impacts, there has been little hard data to test varying hypotheses,” Knoll added.

First, higher interest rates will reward savers, making it more expensive to take risks. And with interest rates so low, companies could suddenly load up on debt: From 2007 to 2017, global nonfinancial corporate debt doubled, to $66 trillion. Now, with the arrival of a new supercycle, money managers are once again being forced to adapt to a changing set of economic realities. Normally, when the Fed hikes interest rates rapidly, the stock market tanks. Rising interest rates will make loans more expensive, forcing businesses to make more-thoughtful decisions about debt.
