It's holding on to its weekly gain of 20%, and is on pace for its best week in more than a year. Earlier this week surged more than 20% over two days, as expectations of an SEC approval of ether ETF applications changed abruptly. By contrast, in the weeks leading up to approvals for bitcoin ETFs, the SEC was reported to be engaging actively with fund issuers. Coinbase , which may be a beneficiary of ether ETFs, was more than 1% in premarket trading, while Robinhood nearly 1%. Cryptocurrency prices, including ether's, may also be tempered by the Thursday afternoon stock market sell-off.

Relative to bitcoin , the initial price action following the upgrade is even weaker historically, with ether underperforming 80% of the time in the first 20 days, Saunders added. Saunders warned, however, that the trading environment for crypto is different today than it was during previous Ethereum network upgrades. The scalability problem Dencun follows the "Shapella" upgrade from almost a year ago, which allowed investors to withdraw their staked ether from the network for the first time. This upgrade is focused on the longer-term goal of enhancing Ethereum's ability to handle more activity and transactions as the network grows. "The Dencun upgrade serves as an important step in addressing this congestion, which hurts users and developers alike."

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - Other U.S. crypto exchanges are likely to be in the firing line after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week sued Coinbase and Binance, two of the world's largest crypto exchanges, for allegedly breaching its rules. Both Coinbase and Binance deny the SEC's allegations and have pledged to vigorously defend themselves in court. The Coinbase and Binance suits this week expand that list to include some commonly traded tokens, such as Solana, Cardano and Polygon. While big crypto companies can afford to fight the SEC, smaller companies have filed for bankruptcy following SEC enforcement actions, including crypto exchange Beaxy. "I think if there's a real value in these crypto tokens, then compliance will build trust and the business model might change," he said.
