WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. Federal law related to presidential transitions stipulates Sept. 1 as the deadline for GSA to enter into formal agreements with presidential transition teams. Several former Trump administration staffers are part of the groups behind Project 2025, but McMahon and Lutnick haven’t been connected to the effort.

Read previewAt 81 years old, President Joe Biden is facing criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike that he's too old to be president again. Many draw parallels between Biden and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who refused to step down from her lifetime appointment to the court while President Barack Obama was in office. The current Supreme Court is comprised of 6 conservative justices and 3 liberals, though Chief Justice John Roberts is often considered a swing vote. Bill Clinton's choice for Supreme Court vacancy, on Capitol Hill, June 15, 1993. Supreme Court justices are appointed, not elected, and the confirmation of Obama's nomination of Garland was blocked by Republicans in the Senate in the wake of Antonin Scalia's death in 2016.

A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. Journal Editorial Report: The administration gives full support, but will it last? Image: Samuel Corum - Pool Via Cnp/Zuma PressPresident Biden on Thursday night finally told Americans the truth about a new world of threats, which he called “an inflection point.” It’s also a decisive moment for the Commander in Chief: Will Mr. Biden respond if Iran keeps attacking U.S. forces abroad? And will he build support in Congress to restore U.S. military power? Wars in Israel and Ukraine “can seem far away,” the President said in a rare Oval Office address. Vladimir Putin, Mr. Biden noted, views the Baltic countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as rogue Russian provinces.

Journal Editorial Report: The administration gives full support, but will it last? Image: Samuel Corum - Pool Via Cnp/Zuma PressAn unfortunate reality of the Biden Presidency has been the failure of deterrence since the chaotic retreat from Afghanistan. White House warnings didn’t deter Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine, and they haven’t stopped Iran’s proxies from attacking U.S. forces or facilities some 83 times. Now we’ll see if U.S. warnings deter Iran from unleashing Hezbollah and other proxies from opening a second or third front against Israel.

Wonder Land: Joe Biden’s administration is willing to bail out, backstop, guarantee and subsidize just about everything. Images: Storyblocks/Pool Via Cnp/Zuma PressPresident Biden meets Tuesday with Congressional leaders at the White House to discuss the federal debt limit, and GOP leaders Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell could do worse than point to Monday’s Congressional Budget Office budget review for April. It shows that federal outlays continue to soar even as tax revenue declines. April is typically the best month for the federal fisc because it’s the tax payment deadline for the previous year. Including adjustments for timing shifts in federal outlays, the decline was $274 billion, or 73% from April 2022.

Images: AFP/Getty Images/CNP/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyGood news is rare these days, so it’s worth celebrating the remarkable results that Eli Lilly reported Wednesday from a late-stage trial on its experimental Alzheimer’s drug. If only the Biden Administration would now let seniors have access to such breakthrough treatments. Lilly’s monoclonal antibody donanemab works by clearing amyloid plaque in the brain that is a characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. The cause of Alzheimer’s isn’t known, but many researchers believe that plaque that builds up over decades can cause a cascade of neurological degeneration.

Journal Editorial Report: The week's best and worst from Kim Strassel, Kyle Peterson and Dan Henninger. Images: AFP/Getty Images/CNP/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyThe Biden administration plans a fundamental transformation of American economic policy at home and abroad. That’s the takeaway from national security adviser Jake Sullivan ’s speech at the Brookings Institution last week. This was a big speech about major policy changes, and those who want to understand the direction of American policy in a second Biden term would be unwise to overlook it. The break with post-Cold War Democratic trade and economic policy is radical.
An influential conservative group, the Council for National Policy, held one of its summits this weekend. The Council for National Policy held a summit this weekend at Trump National Doral, a golf club owned by former President Trump that's just on the outskirts of the City of Miami. The Council for National Policy has been meeting for roughly four decades under a shroud of silence in upscale locations three times a year. "President Trump was honored to have the Council for National Policy at the world-renowned Trump National Doral," he said. "Somebody gets you in, you sort of be loyal to that person," Trump said.

In exchange for as little as a few thousand dollars in contributions to the nonprofit, these people received easy access to events where Supreme Court justices would be. Supreme Court Historical society trustee Jay Sekulow, center, represented President Trump during the latter's impeachment trial in 2020. Anti-abortion advocates cheer in front of the Supreme Court after the decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores was announced in 2014. Alito did not respond to a request for comment on his involvement in the Supreme Court Historical Society. Supreme Court justices, though, aren't even required to stay within those weak guardrails because no code of ethics governs justices' behavior.
