Tim Walz and JD Vance. AP/Getty ImagesDemocrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance are set to meet Tuesday night in the only vice presidential debate of the 2024 election — and in what might be the last time the two campaigns square off onstage. The matchup between Walz, the 60-year-old Minnesota governor, and Vance, the 40-year-old Ohio senator, is being hosted by CBS News and taking place in New York, without a live audience. Voters’ decisions are overwhelmingly influenced by the tops of the party tickets, and Walz and Vance are likely to devote much of their time attacking Trump and Harris respectively. Keep reading here for more of the five things to watch for ahead of tonight’s debate.

A nearly four-year-old legal effort by Black voters to convince a court to prevent former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from potentially intimidating voters and poll workers is quietly coming back to life as the 2024 election approaches. First brought in the days following the 2020 election, the lawsuit has moved slowly through the federal courts in Washington, DC, as Trump’s claims of presidential immunity from civil lawsuits were being litigated. It coincidently has landed before US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge handling the federal election subversion charges against Trump. But now, the case is beginning to show signs of movement. If the plaintiffs ultimately prevail, their victory could provide them with a significant deterrence against potential intimidation and harassment of election workers and voters from Republicans as Trump and his allies signal that they will again try to undermine the results of the election.

Greg Landsman is interviewed in his Longworth Building office, Washington D.C., on November 3. Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc/Getty ImagesThe assassination attempt on Donald Trump “overtook” conversations about whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race, Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio said on CNN Tuesday. On “CNN This Morning” Tuesday, Kasie Hunt asked Landsman, “Are you ready to tell President Biden that you think he should step aside?”“No. First and foremost, what we all witnessed on Saturday was this, an attempted assassination on … former President Trump’s life,” Landsman responded. “My concerns about the president’s ability to make this case against Donald Trump, I’ve expressed those concerns to leadership,” Landsman said.
