In fiscal 2022 and 2023 combined, Disney's experiences unit, which houses the parks, generated 67.5% of the company's operating income. That represents a significant deceleration in growth from its first and second quarters, when operating income rose 8% and 12%, respectively. Nispel argued that negative sentiment around Disney's theme parks performance could be a reason to have less conviction on the stock in the near term. The more excitement around its movies, the more interest in everything from theme parks to streaming services to branded merchandise. Operating income, in particular, rose more than $350 million year over year to $254 million.

As many American companies struggle to navigate the world's second-largest economy, Meta Platforms has found itself raking in billions of dollars from China without the direct challenges of doing business there. The influx in spending from Chinese ecommerce advertisers has been a "significant positive" for Meta, said Rohit Kulkarni, analyst at Roth MKM covering internet companies. Many American companies doing business in China have battled similar challenges as the post-Covid recovery there has progressed slower than expected. Meta has said it has a "diverse advertiser base" of Chinese companies. The concern is that as more Chinese advertisers target American consumers through Meta's platforms, that could drive up the price of ads for everyone.

Eli Lilly shares had their worst day of the year Thursday, falling 4.5% in the session to close at $591.32. AstraZeneca's encroachment on turf currently dominated by Eli Lilly and Danish rival Novo Nordisk (NVO) may have contributed to Thursday's declines. That approval, despite being widely expected, pushed Eli Lilly to an all-time closing high Wednesday, at $619.13 per share. Our desire to own Eli Lilly over Novo Nordisk hinges, in part, on our confidence in Eli Lilly's other treatment opportunities, such as in Alzheimer's.

Those potential returns can come from two places: Danaher stock and shares of Veralto (VLTO), the soon-to-be-standalone company that's in the business of water quality. When we receive Veralto shares on Monday, as all Danaher shareholders will, we intend to keep them, based on their current expected value. A "when-issued" market was established Wednesday for both Danaher and Veralto stock, providing a first look at how investors are valuing the companies on their own.
