The sources, who preferred to remain anonymous given the investigation's sensitive nature, said that the cloud market remedies could be announced within the next two weeks. Amazon is the largest player in the market, offering cloud services via its Amazon Web Services (AWS) arm. Ofcom subsequently referred its cloud review to the CMA to address competition issues in the market. She is expected to outline plans for a review in 2025 into whether the CMA should more frequently use behavioral remedies when approving deals, the FT reported.

SINGAPORE — Chinese tech giant Tencent is increasingly leveraging its WeChat super-app ecosystem to set itself apart from dominant global cloud service players, Tencent Cloud CEO Dowson Tong said. Super app platforms are often developed using cloud infrastructure to provide scalability, reliability, and efficient resource management. For example, Cambodia's Canadia Bank partnered with Tencent Cloud to launch a new mobile banking app in 2023. For instance, Amazon specializes in e-commerce, cloud services, and streaming, but does not have a single app integrating these services. Similarly, Microsoft offers enterprise solutions such as Office 365 and gaming, but lacks a comprehensive consumer-facing super app.

Sovereign AI is "more driven by the industry naming it that, than it is from the policymakers' side," Gow said. On Wednesday, Denmark laid out a landmark white paper outlining how companies can use AI in compliance with the incoming EU AI Act — the world's first major AI law. How regulation fueled a mindset shiftThat's not to say regulations haven't proven an important factor in getting tech giants to think more about building localized AI infrastructure within Europe. The concept of AI sovereignty is also getting buy-in from local European tech firms. Orange hasn't yet selected a partner for these sovereign AI model ambitions.

CoreWeave, a startup that rents out Nvidia's artificial intelligence chips to other companies, said Wednesday that it closed a $650 million secondary share sale, with Cisco and Pure Storage investing alongside financial institutions. Bloomberg reported last month that CoreWeave was targeting a $23 billion valuation for the deal, up from $19 billion in a $1.1 billion investment round announced in May. CoreWeave is going head-to-head with large cloud infrastructure providers, such as Amazon and Google in providing Nvidia's graphics processing units, or GPUs, to companies for AI workloads. The following month Nvidia said its H200 GPUs had become available through CoreWeave, meaning the startup was the first cloud provider to reach general availability with the graphics cards. In addition to Cisco and Pure, investment firms including BlackRock , Coatue and Fidelity participated in CoreWeave's secondary sale.

AWS is negotiating a potential $475 million AI cloud deal with IBM. Under such a deal, IBM would use AWS's EC2 servers that come equipped with Nvidia's AI chips, the document stated. The negotiations also highlight continued demand for Nvidia GPUs. Efforts here have been mixed so far, and it's unclear if an IBM deal would include access to these homegrown Amazon components.
