Comcast is expected to announce a plan Wednesday to spin off its cable networks into a separate company, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News. Comcast had announced during its quarterly earnings call in October that it was considering spinning off its cable networks. Bravo will remain part of Comcast’s NBCUniversal because its content is heavily featured on Peacock, CNBC reported. Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts will have a voting position in the new entity, but he won't be on the board of directors, CNBC reported. Executive Vice President Adam Miller will become NBCUniversal’s chief operating officer, CNBC reported.

New York CNN —Comcast is planning to spin off most of its cable television networks, including MSNBC and CNBC, into a separate publicly traded company, according to executives with knowledge of the plan. The spinoff is expected to be formally announced on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the impending announcement on Tuesday evening, said the involved channels also include USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel. While observers may view the spinoff as an attempt to shed cable channels that are losing value in the streaming age, the channels still contribute strong profits to Comcast’s bottom line. Wall Street analysts are predicting further consolidation of major media companies in the years ahead.

To the Editor:It pains me to agree with “To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race” (editorial, June 30), but even more painful is the reality that President Biden may need to take matters one step further and resign the presidency right now, and allow Kamala Harris to run for president as an incumbent. An advantage of a long primary season is the time afforded to coalesce around the eventual nominee. Four years ago, the Democratic Party determined that Kamala Harris would be a worthy successor to Mr. Biden. As president, she would bring energy and enthusiasm, which the 2024 campaign has been wholly lacking. By resigning now, Mr. Biden would permit the Democratic Party to unite under a candidate who can start at once on the essential task of defeating his predecessor.

CNN —Armenia will leave a Russia-led military alliance, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed Wednesday, accusing members of the bloc of plotting with bitter rival Azerbaijan to start a war against them. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which Azerbaijan reclaimed in full by force in September. Russia has traditionally allied with Armenia, but their relations have soured in recent months while Moscow’s ties to Azerbaijan have deepened. Thousands of tumbleweeds had blown into town and piled up against people’s homes overnight. CNN —Mary Cleave, the NASA astronaut who in 1989 became the first woman to fly on a space shuttle mission after the Challenger disaster, has died at the age of 76, the space agency announced on Wednesday. “For me, space flight was great, but it was gravy on top of getting to fly in great airplanes,” she told NASA. Getting to orbitOn her first mission, flying on NASA’s Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1985, Cleave became the 10th woman to travel into space. Over the course of her two shuttle missions, Cleave spent more than 10 days in orbit. MOSCOW (Reuters) - The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which is trying to recruit more Russians as spies, has released a video targeting Moscow officials with an appeal to tell the truth about a system it said is riddled with lying sycophants. CIA Director William Burns said in July that disaffection among some Russians over the war in Ukraine was creating a rare opportunity to recruit spies, and that the CIA was not letting it pass. The agency released the video in Russian entitled "Why I made contact with the CIA - for myself" on social media which shows what is clearly supposed to be a Russian official walking through the snow of what looks like a Russian city. "Before I believed that the truth had some value," the video shows as the actor playing a Russian official enters a Russian government building and shows his pass above the double-headed eagle of Russia. But we do," the video says before detailing ways to contact the CIA, which is based in Langley, Virginia.

Over the past year or so, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has bought and increased its stake in Paramount to about 15%. Without the funding, her closely held firm might have needed to pledge more of its Paramount stock against a loan. NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - For the biggest U.S. banks, the nerves this year come after the exam. Fed stress tests subject banks to a theoretical market shock and incorporate elements of operational risk, and then spit out a “stress capital buffer” requirement tailored to each firm. The risk for banks is that new rules get piled on top of existing regulations in a process known as gold-plating. U.S. banks are awaiting a proposal from their regulators to revamp capital rules, expected in July. Gruenberg said regulators were considering expanding the reach of a stricter set of capital rules to include banks with over $100 billion in assets.

At least, that’s the impression left by Jamie Dimon’s answers to recent questioning in relation to Jeffrey Epstein, the dead sex-trafficker who was a JPMorgan (JPM.N) client for 15 years. Taken altogether, the case is a sign that the bank is simply too big for one person to manage. Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 1998 until 2013. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Litigation related to Epstein is still pending between the U.S. Virgin Islands and JPMorgan, as are claims by JPMorgan against its former head of investment banking, Jes Staley.
