Paris CNN —The French National Assembly has passed a historic bill that moves the country one step closer to enshrining the right to abortion in its constitution. Some right-wing lawmakers have expressed similar viewpoints, maintaining that abortion rights in France are in no imminent danger. A national move with a universal messageFrance’s decision to constitutionalize abortion was spurred in large part by a global context riddled with roll-backs on reproductive rights. At the same time, the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US left many French women wondering if they would be next. Now, they hope France’s own move to enshrine abortion rights could serve as inspiration abroad.

Paris CNN —When the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, French women were paying close attention. Ludovic Marin/AFP/Getty ImagesProtesters voice their support for abortion rights during a debate at the Senate in Paris. According to backers of the bill, therefore, constitutionalization would safeguard abortion rights even if a pro-life majority were to be voted into office. Just last week, Argentina elected a far-right president who has pledged to reverse the abortion rights the country acquired in 2020. ‘Now or never’In France, recent polling data suggests 86% of people are now favorable to the constitutionalization of abortion rights.

Speaking to French outlet CNews on Monday, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused Benzema of having connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, a religious and political group which France considers a terrorist organization. And in recent weeks, I’ve been particularly interested, Mr. Benzema is linked, we all know it, notoriously with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood is a religious and political group founded on the belief that Islam is not simply a religion, but a way of life. The Muslim Brotherhood officially rejects the use of violent means to secure its goals. There is no evidence that the Muslim Brotherhood has any connection to Hamas’ attack on Israel.

Paris/London CNN —Two of the largest retail chains in France have announced they will forego all profit on fuel sales, yielding to government pressure to sell gasoline and diesel at cost. “From September 29, the 750 service stations of Leclerc hypermarkets will be selling petrol ‘at cost price’ every day. This, of course, means with no profit,” Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president of the E. Leclerc group, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday. Making zero or very little profit on fuel sales may be new for French retailers but their US counterparts have been doing it for years. Gasoline sales at the warehouse clubs are an important part of their business and draw customers inside.

Paris CNN —It’s 6.30 a.m. on a late summer morning in Paris. “We heard they were coming to take us today but I am not sure where to,” Obsa, a 31-year-old political refugee from Ethiopia, told CNN. Obsa was relying on emergency housing in a hotel but says it kicked him out after his wife joined him. Some 10 regional temporary shelters, known as SAS, have been set up around the country to welcome the new arrivals outside of Paris, according to the Dihal. The other problem is the lack of emergency housing spaces available in the regions where migrants are being transferred to.

Paris CNN —France’s highest court on Thursday upheld the government’s ban on students in public schools from wearing the abaya, a long, robe-like garment often worn by Muslim women, in a decision that rights groups warn will lead to more discrimination. The ban has its legal foundation in a law passed in 2004 forbidding the wearing of “conspicuous” religious symbols in French schools. Action Droits Des Musulmans (ADM), the Muslim rights group that filed the appeal, argued that the ban infringes on “fundamental rights,” such as the right to personal freedom. Macron said the ban was not “stigmatizing” anyone, but “people who push the abaya” are. Last year lawmakers backed a ban on wearing the hijab and other “conspicuous religious symbols” in sports competitions.

CNN —UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has condemned Luis Rubiales’ unwanted kiss on Women’s World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso, describing it as “inappropriate” in an interview with French outlet L’Equipe on Wednesday. Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation, was provisionally suspended by FIFA, global soccer’s governing body, on Saturday after he forcibly kissed Hermoso during Spain’s victory celebrations at the World Cup on August 20. “Of course, what he did was inappropriate,” said Čeferin, who also serves as one of FIFA’s eight vice-presidents. Rubiales has faced widespread criticism for his actions at the Women's World Cup final. Earlier this week, all 19 of the Spanish federation’s regional presidents called for Rubiales to resign while also offering unanimous support for interim president Pedro Rocha, who stepped into the role following Rubiales’ suspension by FIFA.
