CNN —Up to 600 people were shot dead in a matter of hours by al Qaeda-linked militants in an August attack on a town in Burkina Faso, according to a French government security assessment that nearly doubles the death toll cited in earlier reports. One person was shot dead on board a bus that was hijacked with passengers on board in downtown Los Angeles early this morning, police said. Police took one suspect into custody early Wednesday who is suspected of hijacking the bus and was unharmed. No details were provided on the identity of the dead victim, who was shot inside the bus and died at a local hospital, police said. Graham said that the driver used "emergency protocols" to sound the alarm. CNN —Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Sunday rolled back some of the controversial quotas on government jobs which sparked violent protests, Reuters reported, citing local media. Since the roles are linked to job security and higher pay, the quota system has angered many in the country, particularly students and young people, as Bangladesh faces high unemployment levels. In 2018, the civil service quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal unconstitutional. On July 10, the Supreme Court suspended the quotas for one month while it took up the case. According to local media, the curfew was extended until after the Supreme Court hearing and will continue for an “uncertain time” following a two-hour break for people to gather supplies, Reuters reported.

Under the court’s orders, Bangladesh will now reserve only 5 percent of government jobs for the children and grandchildren of those who fought for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971, according to Shah Monjurul Hoque, a lawyer representing student groups. That is down from a quota of 30 percent for the group. The court ruling also orders the reduction of quotas for some other groups, and abolishes quotas for women and those from certain districts. It cuts the quota of jobs for ethnic minorities to 1 percent, down from 5 percent, but leaves in place the 1 percent of jobs that are already reserved for those with disabilities. In all, the ruling shrinks the number of reserved jobs to 7 percent from 56 percent, a move that will open up many more civil service jobs to university students, who had called the old system unfair and demanded its reform.

Tens of thousands of students blocked the main streets of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, on Thursday, demanding that quotas for civil service jobs be abolished and those jobs given to candidates on the basis of merit. The protests broke out after a Dhaka court recently reinstated quotas for government jobs, which were abolished by a government order in 2018 following another countrywide student protest. The appellate division halted the new ruling for four weeks on Wednesday, but that did not quell the demonstrations. Protesting students blocked entry and exit points as well as key intersections in Dhaka, one of the world’s most crowded cities, causing major traffic congestion. Students broke a police barricade in Dhaka’s Shahbag area on Thursday evening to conduct a large sit-in.

Freshly elected British prime ministers move into Downing Street swiftly, often within hours of elections. Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party won a commanding majority in the House of Commons, was formally appointed prime minister on Friday by King Charles III.
