Within days of the Hamas attack on Israel, Gabi Chutter went from working at a private elementary school to supervising a hastily set up warehouse on Long Island, where dozens of volunteers received donated tactical gear and humanitarian supplies to send to Israeli soldiers.
The 25-year-old, who has first-responder training and relatives in Israel, wanted to fly to Israel after last weekend’s violence but instead joined a local effort to get items to troops on the ground, leveraging newly formed WhatsApp groups and word-of-mouth.
The group Chutter joined started small, asking volunteers to drop off bags of supplies at a Long Island home.
It was organized by friends of a man killed in Israel and a New York-based family with two sons in Israel.
