U.S. adults will wager $35 billion this NFL season, according to projections from the American Gaming Association. Since last NFL season, Maine, North Carolina and Vermont have allowed sports betting operators to launch in their states. "The NFL season is our biggest acquisition period of the year," said Christian Genetski, president of FanDuel, the nation's leading sportsbook. Since then, Fanatics Sportsbook acquired PointsBet's U.S. operations and technology, which is now fully integrated. It first launched in November last year, smack in the middle of NFL season.

CNN —Seize The Grey bested an eight-horse field to win the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes at a muddy Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Entering the race at 9-1 odds, Seize The Grey ran ahead of Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan throughout the race. For the first time in 85 years, the Preakness Stakes was being run on a muddy track, conditions which clearly suited the three-year-old colt. Jockey Jaime Torres, competing in his first Preakness Stakes, rode Seize The Grey to a wire-to-wire victory. The racetrack known as Old Hilltop has long been a safe space for the trainer Bob Baffert. Eight times he has come to Baltimore with a horse fast enough to leave with the blanket of black-eyed Susans that are draped over the withers of the Preakness Stakes winner. The green stakes barn with white trim is a friendly bunker for Baffert. It houses all the horses competing in the second leg of the Triple Crown and is the daylight-to-dusk hub for those who care for them. There are familiar faces, like Baffert’s mentor and friend D. How Humans Failed Racehorses

It was a welcome conclusion for the multibillion-dollar sport imperiled by frequent racing fatalities, reckless breeding, dodgy doping practices and the old-fashioned greed of veterinarians, trainers and owners. Last year, 12 horses perished at Churchill Downs in the days surrounding the famous race. Two weeks later, a horse trained by one of the sport’s most recognized trainers died at Pimlico Race Course. Ambulances rumbled onto the track, emergency workers erected privacy screens and, behind them, vets euthanized the horses with injections. All of it put the social acceptability of one of America’s oldest sports at risk.

The Kentucky Derby, the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the United States, is celebrating its 150th anniversary on Saturday with a new $200 million paddock and a host of safety initiatives meant to curb the horse deaths that marred last year’s event. Revelers at Churchill Downs will be wearing colorful hats and sipping $22 mint juleps from souvenir glasses under the twin spires that stand sentry over this cathedral of horse racing. From the first Derby, won by Aristides in 1875, to this year’s race, one constant has remained. When the announcer declares, “And they’re off,” all involved with getting the top 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the country into the starting gate, from the owners to the trainers to the grooms, hold their breath and hope their horse will cross the finish line first.

There are many associations that come to mind with the Kentucky Derby. But to be a true participant in the Derby spectacle, one needs a proper Derby hat. The tradition for wearing eye-catching attire to America’s most famous horse race began in the 1870s. The founder of the Kentucky Derby, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., was inspired by the fashionable dress codes at events like Ascot in Britain and Paris’s Grand Prix. Creating his own, he figured, would transform his racetrack from a place of ill-repute to one for well-heeled high society.

In the world according to Mike Repole, everyone involved in horse racing is a dummy. Except him, Mike from Queens or the Commish, as some of his followers on X call him. Stuart S. Janney III, chairman of the nonprofit Jockey Club, is clueless and tone deaf and has run the sport into the ground, Repole says. Churchill Downs Inc., which hosts the Kentucky Derby, is cheap: The $3 million purse for America’s most famous race should be much more, and the racetrack treats Repole and other owners badly. Forget about John Stewart, a new owner bringing fresh energy and big money into the game.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Voters in Virginia's capital city are deciding Tuesday whether developers can move forward with a proposed $562 million resort casino along Interstate 95. A ballot measure on whether to allow the gambling and entertainment complex is before Richmond voters for a second time, after the city narrowly rejected the proposal two years ago. Many of the anti-casino signs that dotted the city in recent weeks have emphasized the fact that the city already said “no” once before. Boosters estimate the casino will deliver 1,300 permanent jobs, and developers are promising big financial benefits. An agreement with the city calls for a one-time upfront $25.5 million payment if the referendum passes, with another $1 million after financing closes.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — After horse deaths marred this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and another occurred days ahead of the world championships, safety at the Breeders’ Cup is under intense scrutiny. “We know equine fatalities is a complicated issue and that’s why we’re continuing to invest in resources,” Drew Fleming, president and CEO of Breeders' Cup Ltd., said Wednesday. Breeders’ Cup officials said his death was due to “a cardiac event.” A required necropsy will determine the official cause. Andy Beshear has seized a commanding fundraising lead over Republican challenger Daniel Cameron in their marquee matchup in Kentucky, their latest campaign finance reports showed. Heading into the fall campaign, Beshear had the advantage of a noncompetitive spring primary campaign, while Cameron exhausted most of his funds during a crowded GOP primary. Cameron’s campaign reported raising about $2.3 million in contributions since May. Cameron's campaign contends their grassroots support is deeper, given the state's GOP strength, especially across the vast rural stretches of the Bluegrass State. Horse racing's federally created oversight panel found no single cause of death among 12 horses at Churchill Downs this spring, but recommends further action and analysis to mitigate risk at the home of the Kentucky Derby, according to a report released Tuesday. The report comes two days before the start of Churchill Downs’ fall September meet and follows the June 7 suspension of racing to conduct an internal safety review. Among the findings in HISA’s report:Political Cartoons View All 1154 Images— An independent review by track surface expert Dennis Moore found no correlation between Churchill Downs’ racetrack surface and the fatal injuries some horse sustained. A release added that additional resources would go to track veterinarians for specialized horse care to assist in pre-race inspections and entry screening. Churchill Downs Inc.
