Archaeologists uncover ancient pot of gold
  + stars: | 2024-08-08 | by ( Taylor Nicioli | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Researchers discovered the stash in Notion, an 80-acre fortified city that was occupied from about the sixth century BC to the first century AD. “No one ever buries a hoard of coins, especially precious metal coins, without intending to retrieve it. One gold coin would have been the equivalent of a month’s salary for a mercenary soldier, according to the University of Michigan. Those were known as Persian silver sigloi, 20 of which would equate to one gold coin. Because of the gold coin’s high value, “it was far more efficient to store wealth in gold coins than in silver,” he added.

Critics say DEI programs are discriminatory and attempt to solve racial discrimination by disadvantaging other groups, particularly White Americans. These diversity training efforts emerged around the time that affirmative action began by executive order from President John F. Kennedy. Despite the backlash against DEI programs and initiatives, many companies are standing firm in their support for DEI. And 71% of people surveyed said they think DEI training is important to “creating a positive workplace culture.”What does DEI look like at work? Thrivent’s DEI training teaches employees how to understand and bridge cultural differences in the workplace, Baker said.

With inflation finally beginning to cool of late, experts expect the Federal Reserve to begin trimming its benchmark interest rate. For savers, it means earning less on interest-paying vehicles such as bonds, cash accounts and certificates of deposit. Versions of all three vehicles currently offer guaranteed interest rates north of 5%. Why it makes sense to lock in higher rates nowFor years, when interest rates were near zero, it was hard to earn practically anything on a short-term bond or cash account. "I do think that leads to interest rate cuts in the U.S. [in the second half of 2024].

None of that sounds like it should bode very well for stocks, but the S&P 500, a measure of the broad U.S. stock market, has returned about 16% so far in 2024. This has been even the bull's dream of a year," says Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at the Carson Group. Indeed, the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon.com and Alphabet have all enjoyed returns over the past year that have vastly outgained the broad market. All 11 S&P 500 sectors sport positive returns year-to-date, with six featuring double-digit returns. That could "loosen up the gears" in what has been a stubborn housing market and should encourage business investment — both good signs for the broader market, he says.

Just about everyone in the investing world, it seems, is bullish on artificial intelligence over the long term. In a recent note, researchers from the BlackRock Investment Institute said AI could usher in a transformation on par with the Industrial Revolution. Chipmaker Nvidia, seen as the leading player in the AI revolution, is up more than 175% over the past 12 months. All told, companies in the tech and communication services sectors — the ones investing most heavily in AI — make up about 44% of the S&P 500. "I don't think anyone would tell you that AI is not a generational investment theme," he says.

Unsponsored athletes in track and field would typically purchase their own apparel bearing the emblems of major brands, effectively providing free advertising for the companies. Instead, Bandit Running offers Olympic hopefuls the all-black kits and warmups — along with short-term endorsement deals. It took the authorities one week to find the bodies of Julianne Williams and Laura Winans near their campsite at a national park in Virginia in 1996 after their family reported them missing. But it would take nearly three decades for the authorities to identify the person they believe killed them. “I want to again extend my condolences to the Winans and Williams families and hope today’s announcement provides some small measure of solace.”An F.B.I. It re-examined previous leads and interviews and evidence recovered from the site of the killings. Investigators submitted some of the evidence for DNA testing and found a match to Mr. Jackson’s DNA, the agency said.

Economists polled by FactSet had anticipated a 0.1% rise in monthly wholesale inflation. Excluding food and energy prices, so-called “core” producer inflation rose 2.3% on an annual basis, the same level seen in April. PPI captures average price shifts before they reach consumers and serves as a potential bellwether for retail-level inflation in the months ahead. The new inflation data follows May’s Consumer Price Index released Wednesday, which showed that the pace of price increase consumers see across goods and services cooled to 3.3% from 3.4% in April. But others expressed concerns that the fall in producer prices may actually represent a negative consequence.

Opinion: Why we’re having less sex
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Opinion Jill Filipovic | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Women still cannot hold top positions in many religious institutions, and so many have understandably rejected these misogynistic formal patriarchies. If young women do indeed feel freer to opt out of sex they don’t want, that’s great. And most women desire sex, too, and deserve to have sex that feels good. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to be having sex all the time. The trick is refusing to fall into sexist ideas about what sex is for or how women should be valued.

What Nvidia's stock split means for retail investors
  + stars: | 2024-05-23 | by ( Samantha Subin | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Nvidia's upcoming stock split could propel the chipmaker higher over the short run and boost already enthusiastic investor sentiment, according to Wall Street. Nvidia's results prompted many Wall Street firms to boost their price targets on the stock as demand continues. While a split may improve accessibility by lowering the share price, it doesn't alter the value or fundamentals of the business. Citi's Atif Malik called the split a "positive surprise," while Susquehanna's Christopher Rolland said it "invigorates the retail crowd." "The 10:1 stock split likely adds short-term momentum to this AI bellwether," said Needham's Quinn Bolton.

Using telescopes capable of detecting X-rays, a team of astronomers has for the first time observed this area — called the “plunging region” — in a black hole about 10,000 light-years from Earth. The study’s findings could help astronomers better understand the formation and evolution of black holes. One thing that’s missing from the study is an actual image of the black hole, because it is too small and far away. But another team of Oxford researchers is working on something even better than a picture: the first movie of a black hole. “For example, it can be used to measure the rotation rate of the black hole,” said Reynolds, who was not involved in the study.

Weekly jobless claims jump to 231,000, the highest since August
  + stars: | 2024-05-09 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Initial filings for unemployment benefits hit their highest level since late August 2023 in a potential sign that an otherwise robust labor market is changing. Also, job openings have been declining amid expectations that the labor market is likely to slow through the year. The four-week moving average of claims, which helps smooth out weekly volatility in numbers, increased to 215,000, up 4,750 from the previous week. "One week does not a trend make, but we can no longer be sure that calm seas lie ahead for the US economy if today's weekly jobless claims are any indication." Markets reacted little to the jobless claims release, with stock market futures slightly negative and Treasury yields mixed.

The arrests came after a months-long investigation by the attorney general’s office into the risks of sexual exploitation of children on Facebook and Instagram. That investigation also formed the basis of a lawsuit against Meta, filed in December, accusing the tech giant of creating a “breeding ground” for child predators. The company also said in December that it had launched technology to proactively detect and disable accounts displaying suspicious behaviors and that it formed a Child Safety Task Force. But Torrez said during Wednesday’s press conference that the arrests underscore the ongoing, real-world risks to children from Meta’s platforms. “Throughout the conversation Fernando sent pictures of his genitals and spoke to her about having sex,” a press release from the attorney general’s office states.

CNN —A judge has scheduled a major defamation case against right-wing cable channel Newsmax to go to trial in late September, putting the battle over 2020 election lies front-and-center at the peak of the 2024 campaign. A trial could have significant implications for the First Amendment and how journalists cover Trump’s election lies. The conservative network doesn’t attract a large audience like Fox News, but Newsmax’s ratings surged after the 2020 election. In addition to the Newsmax case, Smartmatic is also suing Fox News, the fringe far-right cable channel OAN and Trump allies like Rudy Giuliani and Mike Lindell, who peddled the same election lies. But there were delays in that case, creating an opening for the Smartmatic case.

A fascination with the eight private colleges that comprise the Ivy League spans decades. What is an Ivy League degree worth? For decades, studies have shown that earning a college degree is almost always worthwhile. A recent report by Harvard University-based nonpartisan, nonprofit research group Opportunity Insights found that an Ivy League degree carries even more weight in the workforce and beyond.
