CNN —Donald Trump said Friday he plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania – the place where the former president survived an assassination attempt nearly two weeks ago – for a rally that will honor slain supporter Corey Comperatore and those injured in the shooting. Trump’s right ear was bloodied, and he appeared days later at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee wearing a large white bandage over the injured ear. Trump and his allies used the Republican convention to deliver calls for unity in the wake of the assassination attempt. “What a day it will be – fight, fight, fight!” Trump said Friday in his social media post announcing the Butler rally. US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned this week amid scrutiny of security lapses related to the assassination attempt.

CNN —The FBI is seeking to interview former President Donald Trump in its investigation of the assassination attempt to obtain a victim statement — a standard part of the investigation because he is a crime victim, according to a US official. Trump has said he “took a bullet for democracy,” and attacked Wray on Truth Social over his testimony. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was. No wonder the once storied FBI has lost the confidence of America!,” Trump posted. “Anyone who believes this conspiracy bullsh*t is either mentally deficient or willfully peddling falsehoods for political reasons,” Trump adviser Steven Cheung told CNN.

Improving news on inflation again has raised investors' hopes that the Federal Reserve soon will start to aggressively lower interest rates. Futures market pricing now indicates that while the Fed will remain on hold at next week's policy meeting, it will commence cutting in September and move again in November and December. The market-implied probability for a September cut nudged up to about 90% Friday morning, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool that measures fed funds futures pricing. Traders in early 2024 were pricing in at least six cuts this year, but the central bank's rate-setting group has remained on hold for a year. Following the two-day meeting that concludes next Wednesday, the Fed meeting schedule is empty for August, save for the all-important annual conclave in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Massive shark is struck by boat in rare video footage

CNN —Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours. It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision. The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark. But the video and study findings that came out of the incident are timely for the shark research community, noted Dr. Christopher Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. Protecting basking sharksMcInturf emphasized that Ireland — and the United Kingdom — have already taken significant steps to help protect endangered basking sharks.

Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, disclosed on Wednesday that the gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump appeared to have used a drone to survey the site of the shooting for about 11 minutes in the hours before Mr. Trump took the stage. “It appears that around 3:50 p.m., 4:00, on the day of the shooting, that the shooter was flying the drone around the area,” Mr. Wray said during his testimony, noting that it was “not over the stage, but about 200 yards, give or take, away from that.”The gunfire on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., left Mr. Trump’s ear bloodied, killed a rallygoer who had been sitting in the stands and seriously injured two others. Mr. Wray said the would-be assassin operated the drone about two hours before Mr. Trump spoke at the rally.

According to the FBI’s analysis of Thomas Matthew Crooks’ laptop, Crooks searched how far Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot and killed President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The search was on July 6, the same day the Trump rally was announced. “That’s a search that’s obviously significant in terms of his state of mind,” the FBI director added. The drone was in the air for approximately 11 minutes, and investigators believe Crooks watched a live feed from the drone on his phone. The FBI is investigating the shooting as both an attempted assassination and as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

These diversity training efforts emerged around the time that affirmative action began by executive order from President John F. Kennedy. Despite the backlash against DEI programs and initiatives, many companies are standing firm in their support for DEI. And 71% of people surveyed said they think DEI training is important to “creating a positive workplace culture.”What does DEI look like at work? CNN —A local law enforcement commissioner revealed during a House Homeland Security hearing on Tuesday stunning new details about the security failures that led to the near assassination of Donald Trump, raising more questions for the embattled US Secret Service. Paris told lawmakers about the communications between the Secret Service and local law enforcement who initially spotted Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin. “That is my understanding,” Paris said, adding that the officers went searching with other local officers in the area. State Police then received a call and a text from the ESU about Crooks’ activity that they immediately relayed to Secret Service. State Police “verbally turned right around and gave it to the Secret Service,” Paris said.

With inflation finally beginning to cool of late, experts expect the Federal Reserve to begin trimming its benchmark interest rate. For savers, it means earning less on interest-paying vehicles such as bonds, cash accounts and certificates of deposit. Versions of all three vehicles currently offer guaranteed interest rates north of 5%. Why it makes sense to lock in higher rates nowFor years, when interest rates were near zero, it was hard to earn practically anything on a short-term bond or cash account. "I do think that leads to interest rate cuts in the U.S. [in the second half of 2024].

None of that sounds like it should bode very well for stocks, but the S&P 500, a measure of the broad U.S. stock market, has returned about 16% so far in 2024. This has been even the bull's dream of a year," says Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at the Carson Group. Indeed, the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon.com and Alphabet have all enjoyed returns over the past year that have vastly outgained the broad market. All 11 S&P 500 sectors sport positive returns year-to-date, with six featuring double-digit returns. That could "loosen up the gears" in what has been a stubborn housing market and should encourage business investment — both good signs for the broader market, he says.
