Greek organizations tend to be the domain of colleges, with students pledging and developing life-long connections in fraternities and sororities. But Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is thrusting Black Greek organizations into the political sphere. She is the first presidential nominee to come from a Divine Nine Greek organization, so would be the first president from the Black Greek system if elected. That means Harris has ready access to the Divine Nine’s more than 2 million members — including activists, community leaders, philanthropists and more — and what could be a potentially powerful voting and mobilization bloc. The director of the National Counterterrorism Center will step down next month, Biden administration officials said on Wednesday. The director, Christine S. Abizaid, has served three years as the country’s top counterterrorism official. In recent years, a resurgent China and Russia, as well as the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza, have replaced counterterrorism as the country’s main national security priorities. The Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, ISIS Khorasan, dramatically demonstrated its expanding reach earlier this year, conducting deadly attacks in Iran and Russia. CNN —A 10-month-girl police said was abducted from a New Mexico park Friday after the death of her mother and another woman has been found and a suspect is in custody, the FBI announced Monday morning. The bureau did not provide further details on Eleia Maria Torres’ condition and the suspect was not immediately named. The women, both 23, were found with “apparent gunshot wounds” on the ground near a minivan, the police statement said. At the scene, officers also discovered “an infant car seat, an infant stroller and a small baby bottle at the scene,” and began searching for a young child, police said. “Through interviews with family members, investigators learned Samantha Cisneros was the mother to the young female child found at the scene and was also the mother to a 10-month-old child, Eleia Maria Torres,” the news release said.

Food workers wash their hands as they should only one in three times, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The consequence: Germs spread from food workers’ hands to food, which can trigger an outbreak of dangerous foodborne illness in restaurants. By improving handwashing practices, food workers can be a critical part to preventing outbreaks of diseases like norovirus, Salmonella, and E. coli, it said. “In all circumstances, thorough, frequent hand hygiene is critical for preventing the spread of disease. Technology can potentially assist with increasing compliance and quality of hand hygiene, and that is very exciting indeed,” she said.

Memorials sprang up in New York City over the weekend in honor of Flaco, a Eurasian eagle-owl who died on Friday after apparently striking a building on the Upper West Side. His ability to thrive for a year in Manhattan after escaping from the Central Park Zoo last February captivated much of the city, offering an enchanting object lesson about the power of instinct and the beauty of urban wildlife. His death may prove equally instructive. Flaco is among the estimated one billion birds that will die this year in the United States after striking buildings. Building strikes are one of the main causes of death for birds — and one of the easiest threats to solve, according to Christine Sheppard, director of the glass collisions program at the American Bird Conservancy.

TRENTON, N.J. Bob Menendez, who's facing federal corruption charges. Zdan joins a GOP field that is quickly filling with candidates, including Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner and southern New Jersey businessman Curtis Bashaw on the GOP side. New Jersey has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972, but Republicans are hoping the turmoil surrounding Menendez gives them a pickup opportunity in the narrowly divided chamber. He's vowed to fight the charges, though many of his fellow Democrats have abandoned him and some have said he should resign. Nov 27 (Reuters) - BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, will be renamed "Christine Sinclair Place" for one night next week in honour of the captain's final match with the women's international team, Canada Soccer said on Monday. Sinclair, who is the world's all-time leading international goalscorer, announced her retirement from the Canada women's national team in October and her final game will be on Dec. 5 against Australia. "The legacy of Christine's career has and will live on beyond her tremendous accomplishments on the field," Canada Soccer President Charmaine Crooks said in a news release. The 40-year-old Sinclair's international career includes a record 190 goals for Canada, an Olympic gold medal and six World Cup appearances. Sinclair still plans to play for Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League next season and after that expects to remain involved with the game in some capacity.

Iran-backed militias have packed even larger loads of explosives — more than 80 pounds — onto drones launched at American bases, U.S. officials said. “The president has no higher priority than the safety of U.S. personnel, and he directed today’s action to make clear that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests.”“The United States is fully prepared to take further necessary measures to protect our people and our facilities,” he added. The United States has 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria, mostly to help local forces fight remnants of the Islamic State. The Biden administration also uses a “deconfliction” line with Russia to try to manage escalation in Iraq and Syria, two officials said. Russia has troops in Syria, and American officials say they expect that telling Russia before a strike in Syria is the same as telling Iran, as Russian officials often inform Tehran of what is coming.

Oct 26 (Reuters) - Canada's Christine Sinclair never backed down from pressure-packed situations throughout her illustrious career but admitted on Thursday that she was looking forward to a stress-free end to her international career over the coming weeks. "Just trying to soak it all in," Sinclair said in her first official press conference since she announced her retirement last week. The 40-year-old Sinclair's international career includes a record 190 goals for Canada in 327 games, an Olympic gold medal and six World Cup appearances. When Canada's World Cup hopes ended in the group stage after a thrashing by hosts Australia in July Sinclair knew she did not want her international career to end on that note. "I thought that was going to be it, I was going to walk off and not say a word and just be done," said Sinclair.

Whether she was advocating for equal pay and racial justice or just scoring a rare goal off a corner kick, Megan Rapinoe was always unabashedly authentic during her soccer career. Rapinoe sobbed following the U.S. loss to Sweden at this summer's Women's World Cup, knowing it would be her final tournament with the national team. "I’ve just loved every moment of my career,” she said through tears at the World Cup last month in Australia. At the 2019 World Cup in France, Rapinoe scored six goals, including a penalty in the final against the Netherlands. Rapinoe led her team's long fight for equal pay with their men's national team, which started with an EEOC complaint back in 2016.

REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California school district will pay $2.25 million to settle the latest lawsuit involving a teacher who became pregnant by one of at least two students she was accused of sexually abusing. The settlement brings to $8.25 million the amount paid by Redlands Unified School District to Laura Whitehurst’s victims since her 2013 arrest, the Southern California News Group reported Sunday. In August 2016, the district agreed to pay $6 million to a former student who impregnated Whitehust while she was his teacher. Redlands Unified spokesperson Christine Stephens said Friday that the district was aware of the recent settlement, but could not comment due to confidentiality agreements. Whitehurst, who taught English and was a soccer coach, pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with three former students.

If she’s successful, Wozniacki, 33, would join a short list of mothers who have reached the finals of a grand slam, or won. When the tournament was expanded to 32 teams, there was apprehension around whether lower-ranked sides could compete at this level. Concerns about blowouts were blown out of the water in a changing of the guard. Japan are the only previous World Cup champions remaining, having climbed the winners' podium in 2011. In an end of an era, the elimination of the U.S., Canada and Brazil marked inauspicious World Cup finales for some of the game's biggest trailblazers in Megan Rapinoe, Christine Sinclair and Marta. Her Colombia teammates followed in her wake, eating up the ground in the rush to close the distance, to catch her to celebrate the goal that would soon take the country past Jamaica and into the first Women’s World Cup quarterfinal in Colombia’s history. Caicedo’s emergence at this World Cup has not exactly been a surprise. She has long been earmarked as the next big thing: for Colombia, for South America, and increasingly for women’s soccer as a whole. She played in the under-17 World Cup — Colombia finished second — and the under-20 World Cup, reaching the quarterfinals, almost contiguously. This tournament is, in effect, her third World Cup in a year.
