Christina Applegate was met with a standing ovation when she took to the Emmys stage as a presenter. Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021. But she says people don't need to clap every time she does something after her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis. On Monday night at the 75th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, Christina Applegate, a presenter of the award for supporting actress in a comedy series, used a cane and walked to the podium with effortful dignity. The 52-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, wore a red, silk-velvet dress, her signature blond hair parted to the side, cascading down her shoulders like a golden curtain. As she spoke into the mic, panic and determination seemed to be waging a battle behind her green eyes. Since her diagnosis, Ms. Applegate appears to have experienced some of its debilitating effects, and has said she no longer plans to work on camera. Each one walked a fine line.

Christina Applegate made a rare public appearance to present the first Emmy, for supporting actress in a comedy series. Glamorous in a plunging gown and visibly overcome by the long standing ovation she received, she still made self-deprecating jokes about Ozempic and disability. “You’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up,” she told the crowd. Applegate hasn’t announced any new projects since receiving a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2021. The moment of triumph for HBO is coming at a time of transition for the network, which since last year has been run by a debt-ridden parent company, Warner Bros. The network is now part of a streaming service that removed its call letters (bye HBO Max, hello Max). HBO had the three most nominated shows: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). It was in 1992, when NBC landed nominations for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap.” All four series lost to that year’s winner, “Northern Exposure,” from CBS.
