Pope Francis seemed to inadvertently bless the New Orleans Saints — which couldn't come at a better time, as the NFL team just excommunicated their head coach. It comes as the New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday after the team lost to the division rival Carolina Panthers on Sunday, making their seven straight defeat. “They just fired their head coach though, Pontif,” one X user wrote. One person quipped, “Yeah, those New Orleans Saints definitely could use some divine intervention.”Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave of the New Orleans Saints celebrate a touchdown during the second quarter at AT&T Stadium on September 15, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. The Game: Denver (3-3) at New Orleans (2-4)The Storyline: Denver coach Sean Payton returns to New Orleans for the first time since 2022, when he stepped down after 15 seasons as the Saints’ coach, a run that included the franchise’s only Super Bowl title. Payton has downplayed the effect the emotions of the visit will have on the game itself, as has Dennis Allen, the longtime Saints assistant who succeeded Payton. New Orleans has converted 47% of its third-down opportunities, the NFL’s third-highest rate, while the Broncos rank second worst at 25%. Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler completed 22 of his 40 passes against Tampa Bay with a touchdown and two interceptions Sunday in his pro debut. That could spell trouble against a New Orleans defense with 10 interceptions, second most in the league.

Are we living through another Lamar Jackson MVP season? The Bears defense has also been phenomenal and will keep them in games even when Williams will inevitably struggle, as all rookies do. Full disclosure: One of my bold predictions entering the season was that Rattler would wind up taking Derek Carr’s job this season. The bigger concern is the Saints’ defense, which surrendered 600 yards and 50 points and allowed the Bucs to convert 6 of 10 third downs. It doesn’t matter who plays quarterback — the Saints defense has to put up some resistance.

On Sunday afternoon in Dallas, Brady made his second start as the lead analyst for Fox’s No. 1 NFL booth — and it went much better for him than that second career start as a quarterback did. 📺: FOX | @NFL pic.twitter.com/lG5BriNNfc — FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) September 15, 2024Brady personalized some stuff, and that was winning commentary, including how he felt about facing 35-year-old Saints linebacker Demario Davis when he was a player. He mocked himself for a viral moment last week — Fox rules analyst Mike Pereira leaving him hanging on a fist pump. He audibly groaned when Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott missed a third-quarter first-down pass in the flat that would have been a touchdown.

Jacksonville gave the Saints numerous chances to stay in the game, losing two fumbles in the first half and committing several untimely penalties throughout the game. Lonnie Johnson recovered for New Orleans, which stalled on the Jaguars 5 and settled for Grupe's field goal. After their seventh third-down failure of the half, the Saints settled for another Grupe field goal to make it 14-6. Saints: Carr appeared to finish the game in pain, but it was not immediately clear what was ailing him. ... Alontae Taylor left the game briefly in the first quarter with an apparent cut on his nose and returned for the next series.

Jones replaced the injured Jamaal Williams late in the first half and ran for 34 yards on 12 carries. It was big for him and big for us.”The Saints' defense did the rest, holding Panthers rookie Bryce Young to 153 yards passing in his home debut. New Orleans limited Carolina (0-2) to 239 yards and sacked Young, the top overall pick in the draft, four times. In the third quarter, the Panthers brought in Young's backup, Andy Dalton, presumably to run a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches. You make a few plays and you’re at 28 points.”INJURIESSaints: Williams left the game in midway through the second quarter and did not return.

NFL roundup: Eagles lock down No. 1 seed in NFC

1 seed in the NFC with a 22-16 win over the visiting New York Giants on Sunday. Hurts led six scoring drives and the Eagles never trailed the Giants (9-7-1), who had already sewn up the No. 6 seed and opted to rest quarterback Daniel Jones, Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley and other starters. Smith finished the regular season with 4,282 yards passing, surpassing Russell Wilson's team record of 4,219 set in 2016. Baltimore's Anthony Brown was 19-of-44 passing for 286 yards and two interceptions in his first career NFL start.
CNN —The Baltimore Ravens outclassed the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football, winning 27-13 as Justin Houston had an evening to remember. The Ravens defense stifled Andy Dalton and a depleted Saints offense, with Houston finishing with two-and-a-half sacks and a key interception in the fourth quarter, as New Orleans was held to a season-low 243 yards. The star of the show was Houston though who, despite having doubts about his future during the offseason, has looked revived this season. Dalton and backup quarterback Jameis Winston look at tablets during the second quarter against the Ravens. We have a short week this week.”
