When I was 24 years old, I spontaneously decided to move to Italy from my hometown of New York City. I was tired of life in the city and wanted to slow down and experience something different. I didn't have a jobWhen I moved to Italy, I wasn't sure what I would be doing. I didn't speak the languageThanks to years of studying opera, I had a very basic grasp of the Italian language. I am doing what I love through writing and public relations and living my life on my own terms.

Last year sent my daughter to summer camp for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. Summer camp in Italy is nothing like what we think of in the US. I met my now husband, a handsome bohemian Italian artist, during my first summer living in Italy almost 10 years ago. But I've always loved being a momHowever, I love being a mom more than anything in this world. And so does my husband, who quite frankly, never had planned to get married again (I'm his second wife). We both love each other very much, even if there are things we don't love about being married — that doesn't mean our marriage isn't a strong one. The important thing is that we love each other (my husband often reminds me that he loves me more than himself) and love our babies and want to build a life together for us.

My family recently returned from a vacation with my mom, and to say things didn't quite go as planned would be an understatement. After three nights at Gardaland, we would head back to Arezzo for another two nights before heading back home. The kids (our 5-year-old daughter and 7-month-old son) were behaving beautifully and my mom, husband, and I were enjoying the historical sights. We managed to have fun on our less-than-traditional vacation, even with the unplanned hospital stay and worrying about my husband. My mom was a big help emotionally since we were all concerned about my husband and keeping the kids happy.

I always knew that if I eventually had a son, I would want to name him after my great-grandfather, Nicola. My husband already had a son from a previous relationship, and he was named Nicolo. Even my own mother pointed out that perhaps naming my son such a similar name wasn't the best idea. I probably would have felt more odd naming my son such a similar name had my stepson been younger and a closer part of our family. I have always had a relatively small family, and my kids will have the same experience. Sadly, my grandmother died when I was just over 10 years old, and our already small family got even smaller. Still, my children are growing up in a similar way I did — they, too, will have a relatively small family circle. I've realized it's OK to have a small family if our love is strongBased on my own experiences having a small family, I've been able to focus on each person and form deeper, more meaningful relationships. AdvertisementFor me, since I have a small family, it has given me more awareness of just how important relationships with people are.

From when I was around eight years old, my family visited the same place over and over again every summer: Mystic, Connecticut. At just a little over two hours away from my hometown of New York City , Mystic was the perfect destination for a fun, stress-free, easy family vacation. I see how simple these vacations were, but to me, they meant everything. AdvertisementBut for me, vacations are about really connecting and creating long-lasting memories with my family . I want to keep my vacations simple.
